WB Picks Up 'Everwood,' 'Smallville' (angel mention)






LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Drama pilots hoping for a spot on The WB's schedule next season won't have a lot of places to go. "Smallville" and "Everwood," two of the network's staple, young-adult-appeal dramas, have received orders for next year, the network says. They join "Gilmore Girls," which the network picked up earlier this year, on the 2004-05 schedule; long-running shows "7th Heaven" and "Charmed" will also be back. Freshman drama "One Tree Hill" is on the bubble.

That doesn't leave much room for new shows. The 9 p.m. Wednesday spot, currently occupied by the departing "Angel," and 9 p.m. Sundays, which have been given over to unscripted shows since "Tarzan" bombed last fall, seem to be the most likely candidates.

Ratings for both "Smallville" and "Everwood" have taken a hit this season, mirroring The WB as a whole, which is off about 9 percent in total viewers compared to this time last season. "Smallville," which moved from Tuesday to Wednesday nights this season, is drawing about 5.1 million viewers a week, compared to more than 6 million last year. "Everwood" averages 4.5 million viewers, down from just over 5 million last season. On the plus side, "Smallville" has significantly improved the network's 8 p.m. Wednesday average; last season at this time, "Dawson's Creek" was averaging only 3.7 million viewers per week. "Everwood" has also done a better job in its second season of retaining viewers from its "7th Heaven" lead-in.

Jordan Levin, co-CEO of the network, calls the returning dramas the "cornerstones" of the network's schedule. He points to the successful syndication sale of "Smallville" to ABC Family and HDNet and to "Everwood's" creative growth this season as reasons for their return.

WB Renews Every Drama But "Angel"

The WB has given early 2004-05 greenlights to its critically hailed dramas "Everwood" and "Smallville."

Frog has ordered full seasons of each skein, both of which are produced by Warner Bros. TV. Net had already cancelled "Angel" and locked in deals to bring back Aaron Spelling's "7th Heaven" and "Charmed" next fall, along with "Gilmore Girls," leaving "One Tree Hill" as the only question mark on the net's sked -- though the latter skein is likely to return, as well.

WB co-chairman Jordan Levin called the five dramas ordered for next season "the cornerstones of our schedule."

Exec made a point of noting that "Smallville" has followed in the footsteps of some previous Frog hours by "returning significant value to our studio partners. Its recent robust off-net sale to ABC Family and HD-Net of over three-quarters of a million dollars (per episode) came in a marketplace that has not been kind to many new entrants."

Levin said "Everwood" has had "an astonishing creative year" and was "a star player for our stations this past November and February sweeps."

Like much of the WB's primetime lineup, "Smallville" and "Everwood" have suffered Nielsen declines this season.

Still, "Everwood" remains one of TV's top-rated dramas among female teens, with a 3.6/11 in that demo season-to-date. And for the third season in a row, "Smallville" is the WB's top-rated show in the net's target demo of persons 12-34, along with the adults 18-34 and 18-49 demos.

"Everwood," from exec producers Greg Berlanti and Mickey Liddell, will return for a third season. Skein stars Treat Williams and Gregory Smith as a father and son living in a small mountain town.

As for "Smallville," the retelling of the Superman saga will enter its fourth season in the fall. Skein is produced by Tollin/Robbins Prods. in association with WBTV, with Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, Greg Beeman, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins, Joe Davola and Ken Horton serving as exec producers. He is one of the most hated guy for Buffy/Angel fans.
 
Another season of Smallville, god help us all. Glad to see Everwood has been picked up for S3, but Angel should be too. Every show picked up apart from Angel, AHHH.
 
I don't think I'll ever understand what is going through Levin's mind. Angel is by far one of the best show's on television...and it's the only drama the WB doesn't pick up...
 
Yep..I really think Jordan Levin had a childchood trauma or sth coz there's no logical explanation why he'h canceled 'Angel'...

Angel was the WB's most expensive show, and returned one of the lowest amount of viewers (for the amount spent on it). In short, Everwood and Smallville are vastly cheaper for the network, and get many more viewers.

They're cancelling Angel as driftwood, not able to attract the amount of viewers they need for their shareholders - the money is being diverted to Dark Shadows in an attempt to give the genre a kick up the arse, to start returning a better profit.

If you read Levin's wording of from the above article, you'll see him talking in terms of financing for WB's investors. It's all financial.
 
Jordan is all buisness and no hart (get it? hart? as in Wolfram and Hart, and Colin Hart from Everwood??) hahah, ::slaps knee::
ANYWAYS... glad Everwood was picked up. I LOVE that show.

Which I'd accept if it weren't for the fact that Angel is the second highest rated show on the WB among 18-35 year olds. That happens to be the most sought after demographic. Often old enough to have substantial income, often young enough for most of that income to be disposable. There's big ad dollars there. Levin either has another reason for cancelling Angel or was too stupid to realize that fact and take advantage of it.

My money is on too stupid.
 
Angel is one of the only WB shows whose ratings have actually improved this year. I can't believe shows like Everwood and Smallville are now the cornerstones of the network. That just shows how much downhill the network has gone creatively since the 90's, when Buffy and Angel were considered cornerstones of the network.
 
If there's another season of 7th heaven, there's a good chance I might stab myself. I can't believe that show would be picked up again and Angel's now...
 
I am just have to deal with it. If you was a show about teens or three witches. The WB hates you.
