The First Use of 'to Google' on Television? Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Today I learned that, beyond the success Buffy the Vampire Slayer entailed for Joss Whedon"”late of Avengers-directing fame"”it has a nerdly milestone of its own.

According to Charles Arthur in his book Digital Wars, the first use of to google on television appeared in Buffy. On October 15, 2002, in the fourth episode of the show's final season, the character Willow turns to the eponymous slayer and asks, "Have you googled her yet?"

The character Xander answers: "She's 17!"

Willow clarifies: "It's a search engine."

Omg no way!!! That is kind of really epic, Willow deserves to be the first one on TV to have said that 😛 It's so funny how we get so used to technology that we forget how it's not that old. Heck, when s7 aired I didn't have a computer at home.

I just watched that episode the other night and giggled at that line. I was like "WOW, I feel absolutely ancient." 😛

Are you serious? 😀 Think about it, when Buffy aired, the internet was still in it's infant stages. The internet definitely helped Buffy develop a fiercely loyal and dedicated fanbase, via the old Bronze boards. And honestly we've still got a long way to go before we actually realize its potential. This is the start of something either really good or really BAD. Technology gone wrong, in "Dollhouse" fashion. Oh boy.

I don't think I used Google until 2006/2007. I still use ask.com as y search engine, but i remember the first time I heard Google used was on Gilmore Girls. Then I rewatched Buffy and I was like, wow how long has Google been around? like when they make the Harry Potter Hogwarts references. But then I remember that season 7 ended in 2003 so that stuff was already out. Just makes me feel old an the show seem more relevant. As opposed to the first season and all the outdated computer stuff they used there.
