This or variations thereof seems to be a fairly common thread on a lot of forums that I visit (and no, I'm not the one who started any of them) even some that have otherwise quite serious formats, so, knowing that Buffy fans would be the best source for the real information...

So, you're either going out hunting zombies, or you are besieged in your home by the varmints. What do you want in your arsenal and what one person (normal human, no superheroes or Slayers allowed) would you want to cover your back?

A flame thrower. They can't hurt you if they're completely destroyed.
Most zombies can also be killed by destroying their brains or detaching their head. So a machine gun would also be pretty helpful.
But I'd need someone who's good with guns, so I'd choose some kind of special unit or soldier to back me up.

Oh, and Happy Birthday!! 🙂

^ For hunting out in the open, flamethrowers are excellent for mass disposal of those critters, but no good in enclosed environments such as your house or apartment.
Same goes for long bladed weapons like katanas and other swords. You need space and leverage for those things to be of any use (although machetes might be the exception to this).
No...for me a good pump shotgun would be what the doctor ordered, in cases where you are besieged at your home or wherever the case. One well-placed shot is all you need. Messy, but final. And of course, my trusty Glock can do no wrong.

As for someone to fight alongside me....hands down I'd want my kid brother. He's military-trained......three tours of post-9/11 Iraq......a beast with firearms, and built like a ship. Zeds won't be chowing down on anyone in the OM household.

I've often thought about this, and right now my house has a lot of tools and stuff scattered about as we're having a lot of work done. So I figure if a zombie attack happened while they were there, I might find some good weapons. Maybe a massive hammer or something. Or an axe. Or a bat. Other than that I don't know what I'd use. Guns... really think they'd be pretty hard to get hold of where I am. They'd be handy but unless you know how to use them I imagine they'd just weigh you down. More trouble than they're worth when you're no good with them. So if someone else has my back, someone with gun knowledge and fabulous aim would be lovely!

A flame thrower seems to be a popular answer just about everywhere. Keep in mind, though, that they are very heavy, making them both awkward and quite easy to slow down and/or throw the bearer off balance (neither one of which is productive to survival during a mass zombie attack) and, contrary to movies and TV, don't hold a tremendous amount of fuel, so you will run out of "ammunition" pretty quickly. Same goes for a full sized machine gun. It burns up ammo so quickly that the barrel can literally overheat and deform with extended use, making them useless.

I would take a medium to long range assault rifle for anything 20 to 100 yards away (further away pose no real threat and only waste ammunition) a short barreled shotgun with an extended magazine for anything that gets in side the 20 yard range, with a .45 automatic (nothing smaller could even be considered) for backup, and for company gets REALLY close, as in within arms reach, a good short sword or machete.

My partner, probably Chuck Norris, would be armed identically to me so that we could share ammunition. Get out the butter, mama, cause the zombies are TOAST.

BTW, I read World War Z, so I wouldn't be too worried. Flamethrowers are so cool. Willow will be impressed. 😛

BTW, I would definitely have a dog or two or three.

I read it, too, and apparently quite a number of the world's population weren't worried for very long, either. But then they got eaten. And dogs are traditionally terrified of Zombies. Watch the intro to "Zombieland,"
Yeegads I can't believe how many people want to use flamethrowers on the undead 😱

I'm trying hard not to nerd out and scare people with my zombie obsession, but like others have said a flame thrower is a bad choice for zombie killing. The typical canon with regards to zombies is that they can only be killed by destroying the brain or removing the head. Now if we take that canon as the truth about the only thing a flamethrower would do to a zombie is turn them into a walking pyre where they'll set anything on fire they come into contact with. That is pretty much the last thing you want when they're banging on the outside of your house and windows whilst you're inside. Flame throwers should only be used to dispose of zombie bodies after they've been brained to prevent contamination.

As for weapons I'd probably go with a 9mm Glock with plenty of ammunition since its a pretty sturdy weapon with which I've had experience. I know I wouldn't get too tired using it if hundreds of zombies were trying to get in compared to say a heavy shotgun. I'd probably back that up with the wooden baseball bat I keep in my cupboard.

As for who I'd pick to back me up, itd have to be Willow. She's a witch of incredible power and could probably cast some sort of protective spell charm that'd prevent them from breaking into the house; or she could just pulverize them with a spell. Much cheaper then buying a whole ton of ammo. 🙂

You're little 9mm will just punch a tiny hole. My .45 will blow their brains completely out of the zombie's skulls.

Woah, woah, woah. Hold up. Chuck Norris counts as a "normal human?" In that case I'm taking Indiana Jones.

Also, I think I'd fight zombies with my alltime favorite weapon, used by Cordy and Oz in "Dead Man's Party", .......ski poles!!! It could knock the zombies off their balance and I could use them like a japanese bo staff (which I've actually been training how to use).

Mines and hand grenades could also be handy in the open field. Removes limbs from your attackers, which makes them less harmful.

In your home, a lawn mower could also serve you well 😉

I'm gonna post this and then I'll walk away and will not discuss it further.

Long/Medium Range - M4A1 Carbine with holographic sight and front grip.

Close/Medium Range - Taurus PT 92 AF 9mm PARA Pistol.

Master/Skeleton key - 12 Gauge Sawed off O/U shotgun.

Melee - USMC KA-BAR Becker Tac Tool BK3

F*ck You Charlie (Last Resort) - .38 Snubnose revolver

Company - Jason Bourne or Alice from Resident Evil (Before she got the upgrade.)

I have to close out my shift so that's all I got right now.

And if you can somehow manage to get your hands on a minigun with copious piles of ammo, you could mount that sucker on the roof for more serious zed incursions. Just remember to wear earplugs.

A .50 Cal works even better. Pieces of zed flying everywhere. Glorious.

Nice arsenal, though I would question the choice of the Taurus 9mm when larger bore handguns are available. If you need more than the traditional 7 rounds in the 1911, there's the Paraordinance version with a 13 round magazine, a sacrifice of only 3 rounds less than your Taurus more than made up for by the superior stopping power of the .45ACP cartridge. Likewise, the Taurus Judge in .45 LC isn't much larger than your .38, and packs almost twice the power per round.

As for your Ka-Bar, ithat's just a matter of personal preference, but I prefer a large Bowie, like the Ontario Marine Raider or the Cold Steel Laredo. with a solid point for penetration and a sharpened false edge for an effective back stroke. It was good enough for ol' Jim, and it's good enough for me.

Okay; I will discuss it further, I just try not to cause then people realize exactly how obsessed I am with the zombie apocalypse and they stop talking to me.

I go for the 9mm for two reasons; slightly better chance of coming across ammo when scavenging. I also have had more experience shooting it so it's just what I'm used to. I'll have to look into that Para Ordnance .45 though. I've never had a problem with the recoil on them; so if I could find one that bridged the magazine capacity gap I'd definitely consider a switch. If I could have one I'd also take a Colt Peacemaker just for the fact that it's a freaking Colt Peacemaker!

If I had to choose between either of those blades I'd definitely go for the OMR; more weight and the curved blade would work better for decapping a zed. The CSL would be the better choice for penetration no doubt. Good to get in through the eye or at the base of the skull to put a zombie's lights out. I'd have that one on my hip with the OMR on my back. I like the Ka-Bar cause it would maker a great bottle opener.

😛

P.S. On second thought; for back up I want White Avenger on my team.

😀

The Peacemaker's a great gun, but it can only be loaded 1 round at a time. If you like the .45 LC cartridge (I do) get a s&W 25-5. Same round, double action, and with speedloaders, you can reload ALMOST as fast as changing mags in an autoloader.
Kemy Rule # 93 on my own personal list of what to do should Zombies attack my workplace (yes, I have thought about this a time or two) never use a chainsaw. It attracts too much attention and can hurt you bad. REALLY bad.

I'd grab the sks rifle in my (cause its the only gun I have handy), a baseball bat and machete, and my bulldog Luci (although she might try to catch the zombies being the silly catch dog she is) and then grab my posse and hunker down. I can't have just one person:

Muscle: the hubby. Blue belt in jujitsu, mondioring decoy (read already acclimated to getting the tar beat out of him) and overall bada**. Plus he's easy on the eyes.
Brains: Me. Let's face it, I suck at anything involving coordination, and the only way I can contribute is by coming up with plans and strategies to outsmart the undead.
Expert: My sister. Believe me, she knows her stuff (plus I need another hardcore Buffy fan to keep me company).
Sharpshooter: My friend Britt. Zombie Hunter extroidinaire (sp?) And author of our motto: Ninja by day, Zombie Hunter by night.
Wise old (senile) sage: white avenger. Seems to know his stuff, plus he'd bring Chuck with him. Who doesn't like Chuck?

First I hear of Spuffy though and I'll steal his walker and feed him to Zed!

I wouldn't mess with my "Walker" if I were you. He gets mean when folks mess with him. (I ain't senile enough to miss THAT) And he's a Spuffy too!

It was an "Evil Dead" joke
Lol Kemy, I gotcha with the boomstick reference. But, alas, Ash is not here to save the day. He's busy shopping smart. He shops s-mart.

Rule #78: Silence is your friend. Silencers are your weapon's friend!

I've been played the Evil Dead games quite a lot lately, they both take place after the movies in the "real world" around cities and so on, very much modern urban zombie outbreak things. 12-guage ammo and a good chopping seem to work wonders anyway.

Question

I've a question about the thread. What kind of zombies are we talking about?

Kemy mentioned Evil Dead games. In the original Evil Dead movie, you can cut off their head and they still live.

Different zombie "species" also have different intelligence and speed levels.
If they're very fast, like in The Return of the Living Dead, a flame thrower is indeed a bad idea. They probably would catch up with you and burn you, too.

I don't want to start any discussions with this post. I'm just curious.

Okay; a quick chart for the casual or new zombie fan.

Demonic Undead - Evil Dead's deadites fall under this category. They are not technically zombies as it is a malicious evil spirit reanimating the corpse.

Infected Humans - 28 Days Later; again they are not zombies but because they behave like the undead they are commonly grouped together.

Walking Corpse - Just the way grandpa George made 'em; dead body brought back to life by either contagion, biblical apocalypse, alien parasite, etc,....

Bad A** Mother's - A subset of the walking corpse class; first seen in Return of the Living Dead. Can't be killed by destroying the brain; must completely reduce them to ash.

Voodoo Zombie - Almost nonexistent in today's culture; this was the beginning concept for the modern zombie. Haitian voodoo priests are known to administer a neurotoxin found in Pufferfish to their victims; tetrodotoxin. Scarring their frontal lobe and making them little more than slaves.
