So, we learn more about the Reavers. Having Jayne panic at the thought of meeting them said a lot. These are not nice people. Reavers sounds like some kind of perhaps bloodthirsty pirate; clearly these are something else. All that was needed when exploring that ship was some kind of motion detector making regular thumping sounds...
By the looks of it, they were a bit limited with just how nasty the Reavers could be shown as; lots of things in shadow.
River seems to be showing some of whatever her abilities are. The Alliance captain was also a bit of a jerk, though not a complete one.

Ah yes, the people who were experimented on until they became mindlessly savage rape machines, except for being able to operate and maintain a space ship. I get the appeal of the tropes, basically Indians or Tartarians, I don't think it's solid.

There's always the problem with the Reavers in that what they show us are basically "fast zombie types" (which also includes living but rabid, etc.), but apparently can maintain interactions with each other well enough to fly ships. They'd have worked better as controlled shock troops for someone or else people who are normally functional but go berserk once hand to hand combat begins.
As for the Alliance captain, I can actually see his point of view. Remember, most people don't believe in Reavers, and this appears to include mid-level and lower military officials. So this captain has come across a massacre and the people he finds there are blaming it on something that "doesn't exist". He changes his tune pretty quick once he realizes the truth.

This does beg the question as to what the Reavers were originally intended to be, before everything was explained in Serenity. Perhaps they were intended to have a power behind them that simply could not be covered in the length the film had.
Yes; most of his attitude was understandable; he just did not seem as grateful as he could have been for having his life saved.

All I feel like saying on this one is that I liked the contrast between how River and Simon looked out into the vastness of space, underscored by revealing Simon's fear of suiting up, nothing between him and the void other than a spacesuit.
I expect the emptiness was a relief to River's mind, silencing the voices in her head, and thus the big smile.

Re; The Reavers; The idea works perfectly well if the Reavers are some part of humanity that settled in some distant part of the Star System lost to history, that supplements their income with piracy and uses brutality to keep Alliance citizens away. Like Apaches from late westward expansion, or some distant Old Believers convent fortress hidden in northern Siberia. But to make them completely off the spectrum as murder zombies with a fondness for gang rape, how would they function? To me, it's like making a movie about Bigfoot chasing after some cowboys on his motorcycle.

At this point, we haven't seen an actual Reaver on the screen, only someone who has become like them thanks to exposure to them (which works with the zombie infection idea), so we don't know what they are really like (if this is a first watch) beyond scary and brutal. Which would still allow them to fly spaceships. But if they are truly incapable of functioning in any way other than pure violence, their admittedly lax approach (going by the ship that was seen) to maintenance would rapidly render ships unusable. Spaceships are complex items that don't respond that well to the toddler with a hammer approach to fixing them.
I'm glad I can say that I still find the show good. Even if it has been a while.
The interrogations, the poor doctor doctor getting pranked again. Kaylee getting upset when Alliance Captain insults Firefly etc just makes it enjoyable.
They might overselling The Reavers a bit though. Really building up how extremely scary and dangerous they are.
You get the feeling this might be a bit hard to live up to in the end,

Kaylee is just plain adorable!
This is often the case with such things; that's why Nothing is Scarier can work so well, because the audience can often scare themselves better than the creator, because the audience tailors the menace to themselves.
This was mostly a forgettable episode for me. A few memorable scenes like the interrogations, but overall nothing exciting.
