Week 2: Shindig

So, is that two bars and two bar fights?

I was curious and paused it; it looked like one of Inara's potential clients was female.

Bad captain, being mean to Kaylee simply because she wanted some pretties. And Zoe thought so too. At least Kaylee got the pretties.

Questioning the buffet table, just to be sure? Yep, you always have to be sure about that. And a nice guy driving away the mean girls and then Kaylee charming everyone with machinery talk.

Inara and Mal certainly have an interesting relationship, and River revealed a new skill.

Agreed on the sentiment. Basically, I think Kaylee is the high point of this ep. (Though River had one scene that ranked up with them.)

But my impression is that Mal was speaking in jealousy when he makes snarky comments of Kaylee in a pretty dress. (An easy assumption since Joss and his crew seem obsessed with jealousy and unrequited love.) It's when Kaylee mentions Inara wearing fancy clothes and talking about the men she's with that Mal's expression behind her takes a dark tone (and tries to pass it off as his bag being heavy), and when the subject wasn't being changed he then said what he did.

I don't say that to justify him, just to understand the story and characters more. It's what I noticed. (And I almost skipped saying anything at all for this ep.)

So, Mal's rather complicated relationship with Inara, which is already getting pretty obvious only a few episodes in, is spilling over into his treatment of others. Although I think Zoe would have reacted a touch more aggressively to something like that than Kaylee, who is just plain sweet.

Gotta say, I loved Kaylee's layer cake dress. She also seemed to fit right in with the guys with her banter about spacecraft systems and she is definitely the star of this episode. We could use a little more of her in the series.

Think this episode is mostly memorable because of Kaylee's dress. 🙂
That dress and the way Kaylee fits right in with the "guys" talking engines is the highlights for me.
Bullies are also apparently still a thing in the future. Kinda depressing...

Mal being protective to his crew and Inara is quite consistent throughout the series.
No one can insult them except for himself. 🙂

There's a guy in this ep who's also a fireguy (motw) in Xfiles

Played by none other than Mark Sheppard all the way back in season 1.

Sheppard has been in a ton of things, sometimes as one-off parts, sometimes recurring, sometimes as much bigger, such as Crowley in Supernatural.
Why was it Inara in the bar with Mal and Jayne, isn't it usually Zoe?

Jayne would like to see Zoe in a slinky dress, I expect Nota wouldn't say no either!

It's interesting how they're announced, both Inara and Atherton are announced, but Mal gets the escort title!

I feel like this was a good episode explaining what a companion is, but with an actual story too, which the reaver episode lacked.

Oh, I can appreciate a bad azz lady in leather too!

Though seeing Zoe in a slinky dress would be something!

Let's see...

I assume Inara is there because they aren't conducting business. When they are taking action where things might go wrong, you have our three gunpersons. This is strictly relaxation, until Mal decides to steal from the slavers.

My wife is straight and we both agreed we'd like to see Zoe in a slinky dress (but had to wait for Suits).

Generally speaking if both people are of "significance", then they both get announced (so they both get attention). Atherton is apparently "nobility" of some form and we've seen enough by now to note that Companions are considered very powerful. If neither of of importance and the lady is single, the lady usually gets announced (so Kaylee gets attention and Mal is the afterthought).

Slowly catching up. This is one of my favorite episodes. As others have said, Kaylee is a high point.

This is the first time River speaks in full and complete sentences, isn't it?
