There's so much interesting stuff in "No Future for You" that I'm not going to make it in one post...

* There is an INSANE amount of mythological themes and symbolism in Season 8 and in "No Future For You" it all pretty much kicks in. Believe it or not, but if you know what's going on a large chunk of season's plot is handed to you here. Let's start from Buffy's dream. A Winged Lion, what the hell is that thing? First of all, it's the symbol of St. Mark and by extension, of the city of Venice. It also has an interesting alchemical symbolism:

Alchemical texts and artwork will depict a lion when a specific magical/spiritual goal is to be achieved. Conversely, winged eagles in alchemical texts are symbolic of the beginning of a process. Alchemical eagles are symbolic of youth, initiation and the unbridled exuberance felt when launching in a new direction. So, when we see winged lions (a mix of eagles and lions), it's a message of combination - a juxtaposition between beginnings and endings, fact and potential, the seeker and the accomplished.

Yep, that's our boy. And now the best part. We have seen a Winged Lion symbol in Buffy, in the 7th episode, "Angel", it's tattooed on Angel's back. Anyway, in mythic tarot Two of Cups represents the meeting of Eros and Psyche ( the myth that invented the sleep/true love kiss thing ) maybe that's some clue?

I know that for Buffy Angel's Tattoo is not really a Winged Lion but "a bird or something" and I know that she's not "crazy good at symbolism" but she's got an incredible memory. I just have this weird feeling that Buffy has figured it out ( as proven in "Time Of Your Life" - Buffy can be smart ) I mean, she won the war, she outplayed two realities, the world didn't end, most of the people she loves survived - it may be more than just luck and destiny.

* Faith fights two gargoyles. Gargoyles are passée, Buffy so did that years ago, in "Chaos Bleeds" ( in which, by the way, you can beat Ripper-Giles to death with a shovel while he's summoning un-dead gorillas to kick your ass and listen to deliciously inappropriate vampire Tara battle banter and...and slay vampires as Joss Whedon! ) Gargoyles aren't new.

* Vampire kids! It's a real trip down memory lane for Faith, the first vampire she's slain was a child. The mother who turned her children into vampires kind of echoes with Faith's mom, don't you think?

* Dawn/Willow/Renee scene from "NFFY 2" has a nice dynamic. Dawn is about to tell Willow what has really happened, so Will can de-giant her but is interrupted by Renee. We know that Renee is interested in Xander and vice-versa and Dawn, well, she has always had a thing for him too.
 
I felt sad for Faith having to deal with the vamp kids and clean up Wood's and the other slayers mess. Is Robin Wood's now in charge of watching his own group of slayers?

Giles's line "For all intents and purposes, I am the watchers council" was interesting. I wonder how he got to that place. Also, no one seems to be taking orders from the Watchers Council anymore so does that mean that Giles has reorganized the group and is working independently?

Looking at Buffy and Faith's relationship from Faith's perspective was interesting; although I must admit sometimes I get tired of Faith's poor me attitude. This really came out when she mentioned how she gave everything to Buffy...personally I don't think she did. I thought that in S3 both of them kept things to themselves frequently rather than opening up to one another. Guess Faith see's it differently.

The Dawn/Willow scene was sweet although I wish we got to see Buffy/Dawn like that.

Lady Genevieve as a villain was fairly predictable. I figured that there would end up being some slayers who became bad guys and it makes sense that they would go after Buffy in their quest for power.

The Buffy/Faith pool scene was intense. Faith still seems to be jealous of Buffy and Buffy is clearly still holding onto some anger towards Faith. Again, Faith seems to have a poor me attitude...I wish she would get over that. Although, to be fair, I thought it was a bit sneaky of Giles to not inform Faith that Gigi was after Buffy...he had to have know that it would cause some tension for her. I wonder if Buffy will ever be able to give Faith the benefit of the doubt.

Wow, Buffy really has some trust issues. She doesn't trust Faith or Giles at all. And Giles doesn't seem to trust Buffy much these days, withholding information from her and not telling her he is working with Faith. It's a little sad how their relationship has changed.

I liked Faith's decision to stick around. She really cares about what she does and I like getting to see her vulnerable side.

So we finally meet Twilight and it turns out he is intentionally turning Watchers, warlocks, slayers against each other. I didn't see that coming, but it sounds like a plan that will cause lots of problems.

Me, too. I'm as tired of it as Buffy's "I'm always alone" attitude. And Xander's "I'm useless" attitude and Willow's "I'm nothing without magic" attitude. Of all the four, Xander is the only one so far who has gotten over his woobiness.

Speaking of Xander, which is my favorite topic, I just love how close he and Buffy have gotten. Theire scene in the training room is full of win! I love how he hid behind the punching bag to hide his guh-worthy upper body. Ever since their talk in Seeing Red and that adorable hug, their friendship grew stronger and closer while Buffy and Willow's friendship became weaker and distant.

Indeed and very much agreed.
To be fair, Faith was trying to keep her "poor me" feelings to herself, and not burden others with it... we only got to see it because she didn't know there was a comic book artist following her around. 🙂

I think this was the best Faith story we've ever gotten... better than anything on the TV shows, IMO. It's the point where Faith stops being "damaged goods" and starts being a hero in her own right.

What she's doing in this story is what Angel should be doing. Instead of scrawling the word redemption across his forehead and trying to keep a chalkboard tally of people killed vs. people saved, he should just go out there and try to do as much good as he can in the time he has left.

I hope Faith will push him in that direction in their season 9 team-up.
 
I agree. I've never been into Faith at all in the show, but I really loved her story here. I was finally interested in her character. I loved the whole My Fair Lady feel to her arc, I wish we were able to see it on screen. AD's attempt at British accent would have been a blast.
 
I loved this arc and have lots of thoughts about it, then I'll reply to you guys.

First of all I didn't realize that Brian K. Vaughan had pitched some of this storyline to Joss, Tim Minear, and Drew Goddard before as a DVD movie: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&old=1&id=11690. Honestly I think he does a fabulous job, he really "gets" Faith.

And the title comes from the Sex Pistols' "God Save the Queen", which I hide my head in shame to say I had never heard before. So now I'm listening to it repeatedly on YouTube LOL:

I'm not the only one who saw the Doctor Who reference in Part I, right? That surely is David Tennant's #10 & Rose in the street outside Giles' flat.

More of my typical rambling, random thoughts:

-"Oh the Places You'll Go" is incredibly ironic when considering a Slayer's life, Faith's in particular.

- I love all of these covers, including Jeanty's variant covers.

- I was born outside of Cleveland, lived there my 1st 5 years, and have lots of family still there, so I love all the Cleveland jokes. "You can still end up in Cleveland" "The mistake by the lake"

- Giles is wearing a yellow submarine sweater! WTF?! 😀

- Vaughan does a good job with Faith-speak: "The Sunny D went from being an outie to an innie". "I'm the go-to girl for dirty deeds done dirt cheap".

- SLayers killing Slayers; incomprehensible to both Faith & Buffy, but we'll find it isn't the last time. And it's not just the "bad slayers" that do the killing.

- Xander is wearing his Sunnydale Swim Team t-shirt! He really is so sexy in the training room scene. You know that Buffy notices that!

- "The Queen is dead; long live the Queen". Who's the Queen? Buffy?

- Willow: "I'll un-embiggen you" LOL

- Buffy: "No, not being bad is what separates us from the bad guys". Hmmm, all these years of being the Slayer, and she's still this naive?

- It's nice to see the cameo by the Mayor. Reminds me of Harry Groener's appearance in season 7.

- My husband's from Boston, so I love the tiny NY/Boston rivalry shout-out: "Where is that horrid accent from anyway? New York?" "Ouch. That hurts."

- And one of my favorite lines in the entire season: "Burst"

- Why are Giles & Buffy not on speaking terms? Does this go back to season 7? Really, nothing's been resolved in the past 18 months? I always thought it was not sufficiently resolved on the show, a smile & a hug doesn't quite fix it all.

-Twilight's mission: "Bringing the age of magic to a close".

Can you remind me where that story is from? (first vampire she slayed was a child?) And yes, big-time echoes of Faith's mom. The whole scene is really sad, I think she was hoping to save them.

The Watchers Council was destroyed by Caleb in season 7, I think that only a few Watchers even survived. It didn't seem like there was much of a "Council" anymore after that point. Although I don't really think Giles is working for them, if they even exist as an entity anymore. I think he's working for Buffy.

I agree, I did like seeing it from Faith's perspective, although in a lot of ways it seemed like we were just going back to season 3! I really thought they had reached some sort of truce in season 7, so I'm not sure where all the antipathy is coming from. Maybe she's still working through a lot of stuff. And I wonder if there's a bit of jealousy on her part toward Buffy's new position (similar to Dawn's feelings, little sister getting neglected). But the friendship thing is getting a little worn to me- I find it incredibly interesting that she/the writers didn't mention her friendship with AI at all (Angel & Wes in particular). I mean, I'm assuming that IDW's Angel series was going at this point (NFFY was released in 2008), so I guess they didn't want to do too much overlapping of characters. But still, I think that in terms of her understanding of true friendship, forgiveness & redemption, she certainly experienced that with Angel & Wes. Why does everything for her have to be measured by her relationship with Buffy? I guess it always was before this point, which is understandable but sad.
 
I actually made a list of all the pop-culture references Vaughan and Jeanty dropped in:

1. Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss;

2. Giles's Yellow Submarine sweater;

3. "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" -- song by AC/DC;

4. The "great bearded wizard of Northampton" is a reference to comic book writer Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, etc.), who has a notable beard and lives in Northampton, England:

5. "If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding" is a lyric from the Pink Floyd album The Wall. (Or actually, a snippet of dialog in the background between songs. It comes right after the famous song "Another Brick In the Wall, Part 2")

6. Faith references My Fair Lady, a musical about the attempt to train a working-class Cockney girl to speak and act like a "lady of quality."

7. Xander, while working out, references two Kurt Russell characters with eye patches: Captain Ron, from the 1992 comedy of the same name; and

8. Snake Plissken, the much more bad-ass anti-hero protagonist from the 1981 movie Escape From New York.

9. Xander also refers to the "Danger Room," which is a special room the X-Men have set up in their mansion to provide automated combat training.

10. Buffy talks about a "training montage," which is a sequence in movies and TV shows where we see a character training hard while some appropriate piece of music plays; a way of fast-forwarding and letting the audience know the character has been getting ready for some big encounter.

11. Xander refers to the "Dance Dance Revolution" game.

12. The Tenth Doctor (Doctor Who) and his companion, Rose Tyler, are on the street outside Giles's apartment. The phone booth behind them calls to mind the TARDIS, a spaceship/time machine that looks like an old-time police box, while avoiding outright intellectual property violations.

13. I assume the "Hammer of Hamner" that Giles's friend Trafalgar uses to try to break through Roden's force field is a reference to comics artist Cully Hamner. (Who once said he wanted to draw the Thor comics so people could talk about the "Hammer of Hamner".)

14. Buffy refers to the British as the "people who invented girl power." Reference to the Spice Girls.

15. I've wondered what song Gigi was referring to when she said "Yeah... but it's like the song goes..." and then died. I think she was referring to the Sex Pistols song "God Save the Queen" and its lyric that was used for this arc title: "no future for you." Referring to herself, apparently. Gigi was a Clash fan, so it's no stretch to think she was familiar with the Sex Pistols as well.

16. The little devil with the diaper on Faith's shirt at the end of the last issue is "Hot Stuff," a character from Harvey Comics back in the 60's and 70's.

Oh yes he is, but it's not just him. Buffy supposedly came into the training room because she couldn't sleep, except she's wearing a sexy ass hairdo ( I bet that Satsu helped her with that! ) and...and notice those red lips. Confirmed Vixen! Xander knows her too well and gets all awkward and shy.

I can answer this question but the answer is a bit spoiler-ish, so be ye warned.

That line corresponds with Aluwyn's line from "Last Gleaming 2". The Queen is Mother Earth, de-personified Gaia ( Aluwyn aka Saga aka Vasuki aka Echidna is a sort of her avatar/personification like the Winged Lion is the avatar/personification of the Twilight reality ) And Buffy? If we follow the Cupid and Psyche myth, Buffy is basically the human soul. The Seed Of Wonder ( The Cosmic Egg ) is the heart of the world. The dream is prophetic, it shows Buffy the future in which Twilight reality won and claimed The Seed Of Wonder.

I don't think she's naive, I think that she's actually right. At this point she has the right to feel morally superior, she's The Slayer, The Chosen, she died to save the world and returned from the dead to save it again from THE EVIL©, she's a bloody Jesus Christ. Some moronic soldiers try to fight her? To hell with them, because if she's not good than who is? And then Willow asks her if she's ready to kill humans. Buffy's answer?

What happens next? Buffy fights Genevieve and is ready to kill her right there, and that's our answer. Of course Faith saves the brat. What the hell is Faith doing? She was meant to kill her anyway. What is Giles doing, with the secrecy and not involving Buffy? I think that they are both trying to protect Buffy's innocence ( for Giles - she's a daughter, for Faith - sort of a paragon, especially after season 7 ) except there's nothing left to protect.

It's a decent game, game-play wise, a simple Beat 'em up really, but different characters give it some variety. The bosses are pretty cool though and I would love to see that story as a show episode ( vamp!Tara oh my god... ) One can dream.

I really liked this arc the first time I read it and I liked it even more after my re-read. Vaughan does a really great job with writing Faith.

Giles is also one of my favorite characters and it was nice to see him for a bit. Especially since he did get to pwn with magic. I like that he and Faith are able to get along so well.

They are both characters that are willing to do what needs to be done. That's a very lonely existence. At times, even they don't approve of their own actions even if they were necessary.

This separates them from Buffy. At the end of the day Buffy has to be ok with her actions and it seems that Faith and Giles don't have that issue. If that makes any sense.

There were a few lines of Faith's that really stuck out for me. One was "Live and learn. Almost die and learn way more." I really thought about that for a while. To me that's one of the truest things that I've read in a while and I read a lot. And it's just so simple and to the point.

I also liked her telling Genevieve to wake up if she didn't like the dreams. Just seemed mildly awesome.

So, I have a question. Why did Joss decide to use the term "Twilight"? Was he or was he not somehow referring to or stealing the term from the Twilight Saga novels or movies? The original novel was published in 2005 (& I have no idea if he knew anything about it), and the others quickly followed, although I know that the first film was not released until 2008, a year after these first Buffy season 8 arcs were published. (and other than that info don't ask me anything about Stephenie Meyers' Twilight, I know nothing about them other than the hype and seeing bits and pieces of the first movie which I found unbearable)

Anyway, I have not seen any information referencing this. Do you think he regrets using the word because of its association with the Twilight Saga?
 
I think that "Twilight" name is more than just a pop culture reference. Solar themes have always been a part of "Buffy", the sunset in "Prophecy Girl", sunrise in "The Gift", even Buffy's sister name is Dawn. Twilight - the gates to demonic dimensions ( the sources of magic ) are closed, Dawn - the Key, if that's not foreshadowing for future seasons than I may not be evil.

And why would he regret? Just because some time traveller from XIX century wrote a terrible, and for some incomprehensible reason, absurdly popular ( among children and those mildly illiterate ) book of the same name? Um...I don't think so.

LOL. That's precisely why I'm wondering if he regrets it. Because even if he didn't intend an association, an association gets made. I did find a quote that Joss said that he came up with it even before he ever heard of Stephenie Meyers & the Twilight Saga.
 
No Future for You Part 1 - First Reading

Here we go again:

-Love that Faith is ruminating on Dr. Seuss! Also, nice to hear mention of her childhood. I've always wanted more backstory on her.
-Wow. The scene/panel (I'm not up on the comic lingo!) with Faith in that family's home is majorly depressing. My mommy heartstrings are tugging big time. 🙁
-What the HECK is Giles wearing?! Oh, my gosh!! Hahahahaha!
-Isn't it a little irresponsible to send the rehabilitated (kind of) murder slayer off to kill another human being? How can Giles, etc. be so sure it won't send her over the edge again?
-Um, graphic much with the Irish girl? *shudder*
-Yup, Faith is still having her flashbacks. And yay for Giles' tat making an appearance!
-Xander/Buffy punching bag scene - bahahahaha!! Ah, classic.
-Whoa, Faith boobies! Love Giles' quote at the end.

Well, we'll see how Faith does at undercover. Hopefully better than Buffy!

No Future for You Part 2 - First Reading

-I love girls in ball gowns - fun!
-Love the flashback from S3 of Buffy with Faith's knife and her reflection in it. "This is friendship."
-Oh, Faith, you are SO delusional! Drives me nuts when she does that: "Oh, things went wrong. It's the other person's fault. Therefore, I can't trust anyone. It has nothing to do with MY mental imbalance." Uh-huh.
-"Her worshipfulness". Sounds like a Glory-line. Haha.
-Why is Willow always floating? I don't recall that being a side-effect of her spell. A little too fantastical for me.
-Willow and Dawn talking is pretty cute. Though I still want to punch Dawn in the face as much as I did during the TV series. Willow kind of has an attitude towards Buffy in this panel. Wonder what's up with that?
-Oh, Faith, you get yourself into the craziest troubles!
-Oooooh, so we're going to have another good slayer v. evil slayer battle. Twilight is sure throwing hard. I'm interested to see which way Faith is going to swing: towards S3 Faith or S7 Faith?

After posting my thoughts on the issues in each thread, I went back to read what everyone else thought, so I haven't really had any major spoilers in here.

Apparently, Giles is a Beatles fan and wants the world to know it. 😉

-LOVE the cover art. The dream Buffy had of this in S3 always resonated with me.
-Wow. Lady G sure is....crazy. You would think the dudes that started the Slayer line would have had some sort of catch where mentally unbalanced girls couldn't be infused with power and become insanely dangerous. Obviously, this is a problem. Sheesh.
-I find it interesting that Giles has so much confidence in Faith. She doesn't have a great track record, she wasn't really rehabilitated for her problems, and she's been alienated from the group presumably for a long time. I think I said before I thought it a bit reckless to send her on a mission to take a human life, and now I'm thinking he's an idiot for not having the thought that maybe evil Faith might weasel her way out.

-So, Lady G akins the prophetic dreams to be night terrors? Does Faith have the slayer dreams, too, or is she referring to the nightmares her own confused mind makes?
-Liking the dialogue between Willow and Buffy. I can hear the actors speaking the lines. Yay!
-Um, so Roden must be super-powerful since Buffy is under protective spells? I wouldn't think it would be so easy to zap her out of HQ with all of its protection spells and such. Though maybe they don't work for someone being pulled OUT, only if someone else wants to come IN. Lady G sure has a chip on her shoulder, thinking she can take out the Buffster.
-Faith, you moron. Seriously. Why on earth would you stop Buffy from killing her?? Obviously, Faith hasn't figured out how to deal with her own screw-ups, though I don't quite get the whole "it has to only be one of us that's the hero" mentality when there are 1800 other heroes in the world now. Time to get over yourself, honey. These are the only people who gave you a shot, gave you chance after chance after CHANCE, and YOU screwed it up. Owen up to it, get some help, get over it.
