8.10 "Anywhere But Here"
Buffy and Willow meet a demon who reveals a dim future, forcing the two to reflect on their past. Meanwhile, back in Scotland, Dawn confides in Xander the deed that led to her mysterious growth spurt.
An ill-prepared Buffy comes face to face with the new Big Bad in the form of an old-fashioned death match in this standalone issue titled A Beautiful Sunset.
OK, so these 2 issues don't really go together, but I put them together since they're both kind of stand-alones.

I find the story of Robin the Minder & how they created that character really inspiring.
Dark Horse Comics held a contest for one reader to be given a cameo shot in Buffy.[1] The winner was Robin Balzer, who had an entry written on her behalf by her husband, Jerrod.[2] The essay was the couple watching Buffy and sharing it together at the beginning of the onset of Robin's schizophrenia.

-I'm wondering if Willow's enhanced powers are from the Scythe spell.
-Wiccan squads: this surprised me during my first reading. So, are these Slayers who are Wiccans, or simply Wiccans recruited to work with the Slayers? Who is training them, especially since Giles & Willow are kinda of AWOL?

- "Rescue the prince"- so far we have a Queen and a Prince. This reminds me of [MENTION=7170]Tranquillity[/MENTION]'s comments to watch for fairytale images & themes in season 8. Of course it's the princess that usually needs the rescuing in traditional fairytales, but we all know how Buffy subverts common themes.
- More about Twilight's goal: "Death of magic- final triumph of humans over demons". Are Willow's eyes black in that panel?
- Dawn slept with Kenny's roommate: that's why the anti-spells aren't working, also why she doesn't want to talk about it. Dawn & Nick are like Buffy & Parker part 2!
- Robbing the bank, it's a victimless crime. Yeah, right.
- Didja guys see the cracked, empty egg? Remember that newbies!
- "Betrayal. The closest, the most unexpected". We're left wondering: who is the betrayer?
- Willow is keeping Kennedy from Buffy to protect her. Sad, and yet understandable. Willow blames herself & Buffy for Tara's death.
- Buffy had to kill Sephrilian- he was going to further expose her.

- Buffy doesn't feel the connection. I sensed that aloneness in her from the very first issue.
I really liked "A Beautiful Sunset" There is so much going on in it but I really like the bit where Buffy and Xander are talking about the twilight symbol. I like to see them really just being friends and joking with each other. And the lines were so spot on I could hear them saying them in my head.
-Wow, is that ever a muscular bikini-clad Buffster! I LOVE the swimsuit. 🙂 I also love that she's reading Ann Rice.

And I was totally positive where YOU were when I teleported you in the previous issue! Yeah guys, I am not buying it. So why don't they just teleport? Let's say you have a secret crush on this amazing gal and you both need to get somewhere. What's the coolest, sexiest way to do it taking your secret crush into account? Motorbike of course, physical contact is pretty much required. Or you could, you know, FLY like Willow, with your secret crush clinging to you like her very life is at stake. Travelling just doesn't get more physical and erotic.
The important thing is that you rescue the prince.
Who is the woman Willow loves? Who exactly is she talking about in that panel? It's not Tara for obvious reasons and because "again". It's not the demon lady, because, and first time readers trust me on this, she's not really someone that can be hurt. And it's not Kennedy either and not just because Will sleeps with a demon chick. Let's take a look at this relationship.
Despite what many fan fiction writers seem to um...propagate, Kennedy is not a sadistic monster. She loves Willow with all that she has and oh, she died for her. Like really died. Question: where did Ken's soul go? Not that I personally care, because it's Kennedy, just curious. It's not mentioned anywhere in season 8 so...I think that it's safe to assume that Kennedy is simply soulless. Anyway, she loves Red. Too bad, it's not enough for Willow. Will needs something more. Oz gave her a confidence boost, a shy high-school nerd and a rock guitarist, almost a cliché.
And I haven't been a nerd for a very long time, hello, dating a guitarist!
Tara gave her power ( power basically equals confidence for Will ) she was a more powerful witch when they met, when Willow become even more powerful and Tara started complaining about magic abuse, Willow did what? She brainwashed her ( I think that it was the most evil thing Willow has ever done, seriously...it's disguising! ) It's very similar with the Demon Gal. What can Kennedy possibly offer her? So she's a Slayer, big deal, there are over 2000 Slayers, Willow created them herself. Willow keeps Kennedy away from Buffy to protect her. If she wants to protect her so much than why did she turn her into a Slayer in the first place? Willow knows that activation of a Slayer is a postponed death sentence. Would she do that to Tara? I don't think so. Also, Slayers don't need to be protected, their destiny is to protect. Say something like "I want to protect you" to Buffy ( remember how pissed of she was when she had to run away from Glory? ) or Satsu, or Faith, actually don't ever say that to Faith unless you're suicidal or something. Yeah, it's cute and very welcomed if you're with a vanilla human but for a Slayer it's like a worst insult. So Kennedy is either a second rate Slayer ( and "The Chain" seems to suggest that 2003 Slayers are the real deal, besides Ken is also very protective of Willow ) or there's something seriously wrong with their relationship.
Back to our woman that Willow loves. Who is that? Well, who gave Willow the most power?
* What's the deal with this betrayal thing? The demon showed Will the version of the future in which she betrays Buffy. Willow will not do it ( although she kinda tries... ) because
Buffy is more important to her than Tara/Oz/Kennedy, than magic, than everything, she just loves her this much and because spoiler - first time readers stay away
it wouldn't have worked anyway, see: destroyed Seed
Also, take a good look at the Buffy's wounds in the panel with the broken egg-thing. By the way, I've waited for this talk since "Once More, With Feeling", it should have been in season 7 damn it!
They are Wiccans who decided to help some, like Willow. In "Time Of Your Life" one of the Slayers says "Wiccans to the left - Slayers ****'em up! ( one of my favourite quotes! ) There are no Wiccan Slayers and...a Wiccan Slayer - Holy Shit, it's like a God Mode!
Well, that's the kind of evil I meant, but not all magic is evil, so that was kind of my point.

I am re-reading the issue again and have a few further thoughts:
-What is with the clothes Buffy and Willow are wearing? Wow, fashion turn for the worse!
-The whole conversation with Robin is insanely confusing, with the mixing of the past/present/future tense. I'm also not completely clear as to what a Minder does - they just sit by these unstable realities to make sure things don't go nutty?
-Buffy is obviously trying to pry into Willow's life here, but I don't see why she doesn't just ask: "Where were you? How are things with Kennedy?" Things just shouldn't be so awkward. Again these Scoobies have serious communication problems!!
-Why does Willow think she should be embarrassed about bringing Kennedy around her friends? Odd.
-So. This demon is like a truth teller? "You reek of lies." I'm confused as to why Buffy and Willow are wanting to see him. And I don't understand what he means by the "struggle of the Hellmouths" and the imbalance in the world. The imbalance of too many slayers? The imbalance of too much magic?
-I have a REALLY hard time believing Buffy would condone robbing a bank. All these years she was making it in Sunnydale just fine, I would think she would be able to deal with the slayers and such. 1800 powerful gals should be able to get day jobs to fund their extra-curriculars. It just seems way against her usual character. Willow had good insight about that being the first domino.
-Um, Willow doing it with a demon? After all the flak Buffy got for boinking Spike? Really?!
-It annoys me that Willow keeps using all these cheesy terms of endearment with everyone: honey, cutie, my love, etc. She never did that before. Blech.
-I'm a little lost on how Willow figures she caused Tara's death by bringing Buffy back. I mean, yeah, if Buffy had stayed dead then Warren couldn't have shot at her, but the two aren't directly related. Obviously wrong to have brought Buffy back in the first place, but Tara being shot isn't the reason I would attach to it. "I chose you over her." How so??
On the whole death of magic thing in this issue, I kinda find it to be one of the first things that could indicate that Buffy was the betrayal along with the robbery. Although really I think the death of magic comes from Buffy's own subconscious on some level being that she might think its her life goal. However, since the slayer wouldn't even exist without magic and not all magic is evil either, and its her self hate that gives her the idea that what she wants to strive for, but really I think this where she's lying to herself. Also given that Sephrillan shows us various things that are Buffy and Willow subconsciously lying in some way, Buffy with the robbery,and Willow with Alwuyn. Also I kinda find the idea a bunch of BS in general, Buffy has relied on magic to get her out of some many tough spots and it has helped her win against some powerful foes,and it helped Willow throughout the years and I'm guessing many others that used it to defend themselves against evil much like Buffy does with her own power, and really blaming magic on your problems is really as lame as blaming the universe. Also the flying scene was really cute and funny, and you can definitely see problems for Buffy and Willow and major trust issues. Also a great foreshadowing of the TOYL arc, where the magicless world was basically a failure if you consider the lose of one's sense of self and who you are, and general knowledge of the world outside of the mudane is basically lost on most people, a real loss of awareness, which awareness is something Willow had a great deal of in season 8, and its kinda sad she lost it.
I've always thought that Xander and Willow's roles were switched as years went on. Willow used to be Buffy's best friend in every sense of the word(s), she's too suppotive of Buffy's decisions and actions even those that are stupid. While Xander is the one who usually tells Buffy off when she does those said stupid actions.
But from S7, we see Xander becoming a tad more supportive toward the Spike issue, trying hard to think of why would Spike kill again, while Willow jumped into the accusation "William the Bloody returned". In Season Eight, Xander supports Buffy's bank robbing while Willow was the one to tell Buffy off (quite gentler than Teenage Xander used to do) I think it's because Xander had been with Buffy through it all while Willow was away for a whole year. Xander knows the struggles and changes Buffy went through better than Willow.

The rocket launcher from S2 would beg to differ. 🙂 Funnily enough she kept it at her house instead of asking Xander to return it. She had stolen weapons with Faith before. And she'd always illegally broken into shops and other places. She's capable of breaking the law if she thought it was necessary, especially now that she believes she's the law and she's above humanity. Buffy started to change since S7, she's not the same girl she used to be.

I found my (extensive) notes on "Anywhere But Here" that I posted a while ago in another discussion elsewhere, so I'm going to repost them here:
We open with Buffy describing her "Anywhere But Here" fantasy, involving being approached on the beach by Daniel Craig, who is Buffy's celebrity crush and current personification of how much Buffy Misses That Sex. Mr. Craig is about ten times as ripped, and ten years younger, than he is in real life. And Buffy seems to have awarded herself an extra cup size or two, into the bargain.
007 offers Buffy sun block. He wants to help her block the sun. A subtle reference back to "you are the dark?"
Willow is flying with Buffy. Or rather, as Buffy puts it, "You're flying... I'm dangling." More double meaning.
Oddly enough, by the final issue of the season this situation will be reversed.
Willow's "Anywhere But Here" fantasy involves being snowbound in the Crazy Alps with television's Tina Fey, which prompts Buffy to bring up Kennedy, which prompts Willow to change the subject by depositing Buffy hard on the ground on her butt.
They encounter Robin the Minder, who spouts several odd statements that people are still wondering about today:
"The important thing is that you rescue the prince."
"Even I don't follow that one." "No, it follows you."
And Willow's revelation that she knows Robin not because she's met her before, but because she will later on.
Is all of this just random weirdness to create a certain atmosphere, or does it really Mean Stuff? What else does Willow know about her future? Who is the prince and what does he have to do with Sephrilian?
Robin is based on a real-life woman who suffers from schizophrenia, who here gets to see her illness re-defined in heroic Buffyverse terms as "minding an unstable reality." An important task, though not one she got to choose for herself.
Buffy and Willow head down an endless staircase. Willow mentions to Buffy, "you really are afraid of the dark, aren't you?"... but since we only heard Buffy mention that in a dream, one wonders how Willow knows. Has Buffy really become afraid of the dark and mentioned it elsewhere, and it wasn't just a random, mysterious dream statement? Or can Willow read Buffy's dreams?
Back at the castle, Xander has given Dawn a trunkful of her clothes, which he has had magicked to giant-size so she can change out of the clothes she's apparently been wearing for weeks. While swimming around in Dawn's underwear and pretending to be scandalized, Xander just happens to run across a photo of Dawn and Kenny, her Thricewise ex-boyfriend, which "just happens" to have gotten put in with Dawn's clothes when they got supersized. The Xan-Man has gotten pretty crafty. Or "wheedly," as Dawn puts it.
In her new and improved "Anywhere But Here" narrative, Buffy is romancing two different iterations of Christian Bale, but still wearing the cross Angel gave her. She once again brings up Kennedy out of the blue, and once again gets a chilly enough reaction from Willow that a giant demon attack comes as a relief.
They encounter Sephrilian, the Cthulhu-esque Old One they came to see. His "face" consists of a quartered panel displaying four color-coded humanoid faces, each displaying a different emotion. As near as I can figure the faces represent anger (yellow), joy (blue), sorrow (red) and fear (orange). I imagine they they indicate the levels of those emotions within Sephrilian himself. He seems proud of the fact that "all his faces are there to see" and dismisses humans as liars. He seems to be a truth demon of some sort, which may be why Willow chose to come question him.
Sephrilian gives us our first indication of "Twilight" as an event rather than just a person. But his summary of the Twilight event is an odd one: "The end of the struggle, of the Hellmouths... the final triumph of the base humans over the demons. It's your life's goal achieved, Slayer. The death of magic."
This is not, however, Twilight he is describing. It's the defeat of Twilight... the event that actually happens at the end of season 8. It's strange that a being like him would confuse the triumph of Twilight and the defeat of Twilight. Or did he? Could it be that Twilight punked us all, and actually achieved the goal it wanted to achieve all along?
Later on, Sephrilian seems to contradict himself by saying "I welcome this war. I would be rid of your kind." Is he now saying he expects the humans to lose the Twilight War and be destroyed? Or is he simply recognizing that the destruction of magic on earth would mean his prison dimension is cut off from ours, and that although he would be cut off from our world (good riddance), he would be freed once again to roam all the others?
Sephrilian then shows Buffy and Willow two big secrets they've been keeping from each other, counterpointed with Dawn revealing her big secret to Xander.
It's revealed that Buffy has been funding the Slayer army by stealing from a Swiss bank vault, which Willow identifies as the "first domino" that will lead to the entire world waging an unannounced and ill-informed war of genocide against them. Flashback Buffy mentions they have two minutes until the guards wake up, meaning they were knocked out by magic rather than violence. Buffy claims it's a victimless crime, which was way more convincing to me than it was to Willow.
And then, in the third-sexiest panel of season 8, we see Willow's secret as she cuddles nakedly with an equally naked snake woman (our first look at Saga Vasuki), with what looks like an expression of post-coital bliss on her face. Buffy blurts out that "your bad is way better than mine." Somewhere, at that moment, Satsu probably felt a shiver go up her spine.
Dawn admits that she cheated on Kenny and slept with his roommate instead. In her sexual self-reproach she has graduated from Pushy Queen of Slut Town and is now Acres of Skank, and a Satan. Xander makes her feel better by telling her she's a typical teenager, and bringing up Buffy's experience with Parker, which Dawn apparently was completely unaware of. Xander asks Dawn if it feels better to get it off her chest, but she looks distracted and doesn't answer. I take that as an indication that no, she doesn't feel better, and won't until she has actually apologized to Kenny for cheating on him.
Next comes the famous vision of Buffy weeping on the floor of the Seed Chamber as the broken Seed floats overhead. Robin identifies this as "betrayal. The closest. The most unexpected." The vision conveniently fails to display dead Giles or dazed Angel, which kinda would have helped.
Buffy instantly suspects Willow of being the betrayer, which prompts Willow to reveal the last big secret of the issue... that she's been deliberately keeping Kennedy away from Buffy because the last time she let her lover (Tara) get too close to Buffy, it got her killed. And Willow admits to feeling a bit of regret at bringing Buffy back from the dead.
With all of that now out in the open, Buffy and Willow kill Sephrilian. For a mighty Old One, he goes down like a mook. Buffy has had common vampires that gave her more trouble in a fight.
Robin asks what happened, and Buffy replies, "It was demons, playing games." She is not referring to demons in the "monster" sense.
The Jo Chen cover for this issue was one of her best in season 8. Although when I first saw it, I thought the blonde girl hanging on to Willow was Tara rather than Buffy.

Well, I know in S5 everyone FREAKED when they saw Buffybot doing it with him, thinking it was her. I need to re-watch S6 to see if Willow said anything specific.
Ugh, I don't remember that, but will be coming up on it soon on my re-watch. Haven't noticed anything in S5 as of yet. Gag me.

I am disappointed, too, especially with Xander who is okay with it and most likely helped her do it. But I don't see it as out of character for both of them, Buffy stole to buy the equipments she needed for the fight, she thought it was necessary to save the world. Xander would never oppose Buffy after Empty Places, he trusts her so much right now, not to mention being by her side through it all, so he knows that she was desperate for that money.
Well, I know in S5 everyone FREAKED when they saw Buffybot doing it with him, thinking it was her. I need to re-watch S6 to see if Willow said anything specific.
Willow obviously freaked out because Buffy herself was freaking out about the idea of Spike being in love with her and Willow was confused to why Buffy would sleep with him now after she'd expressed disgust and fear at Spike's feelings for her, she figured out that she'd only did it because she was grieving her mother. However, she was very understandable. Even in S6, she never gave Buffy a hard time about it, and while she wasn't sure why Buffy would do it, she always tried to understand and not judge her.
As for the stealing and some other things out of character for Buffy: you have to realize that she now has this even more tremendous burden placed on her: the training & care of all these girls. Yes she dealt with this on a smaller scale in season 7 & we saw the stress it places upon her. The universe was now expecting even more (although it was Buffy & Willow who created it), with no more resources to do it. The Watcher's Council no longer exists in the traditional sense & they already know they have human enemies. I'm not justifying the thievery but I have some sympathy for where she's coming from.

My problem is with the whole Slayer Army in general. Why wouldn't you just train them, then send them back to their towns or wherever to fight evil there? Why do they all need to be clumped together and drawing attention to themselves? Seems kind of stupid to me.

-Are the Radiant (?) covers the ones that are more "realistic" looking? If so, I freaking love them. Especially this one - how awesome!!
-Buffy's narrative: She truly believes she did something "good" by making all of those slayers. Ok - but isn't that what threw the universe all out of whack, or am I just making that up? I love that she calls Caleb a moron. What an emotional stab going from Buffy "moving forward to something better" while training her slayers, to the opposite of Simone creating anarchy. Ugh.
-Everytime they mention guns this season, I think of Buffy in the bank with the security guards, and in S2 when she's telling Joyce that cops can't fight demons. Guns are pretty much useless against the forces of evil.
-"They're going to love it when we start acting exactly like we are." Ah, humanity, with it's beautiful AND ugly faces. Funny how that works.
-So, the world knows about Buffy & Co. robbing that bank? And that's why they're against the Slayers? I can see people being mad about it, but if they know about the fighting of the evil, I would think donations would start pouring in. In addition, if people know about it, Buffy really needs to work on her covert ops.
-Jewel thievery is sexy? Oh, come on, Xander! What is UP with these Scoobies?! Apparently they are completely immersed in the whole "the end justifies the means" thing.
-Poor Xan is always looking for a male friend to bond with. Where's Spike when you need him?
-I find it interesting how Buffy gets excited about slaying now. I think about in S4 when she reamed Riley out for saying the job was kind of fun, and now look at how she is!
-LOVE the party scenes, and Xanders comment about stealing the Yankees. BAHAHA.
-Satsu makes me think that that's how I would be if I were a Slayer. Oh, yeah, I got the strength and reflexes, but still a major klutz!
-Ooo, I had a Spuffy flashback when Buffy kicks Satsu into the vamp nest! I didn't think Buffy still had that whole "people who love me are doomed" mentality.
-I feel like Buffy would be a little more weirded out by a girl being in love with her, given that she's never shown any same-sex tendencies before. Though maybe Spike loving her while he was evil softened her up a bit...
-What in the WORLD happened between her and Willow? I'm getting the feeling that Willow left specifically because of Buffy, not just because she wanted to keep Kennedy from her. This is complicated. 🙂
-Ooo, Twilight, calling Buffy out! He knows her moves? That's interesting - fought her before, has he?? Ok, he clarified the too many slayers thing for me. He sure can wail on the Buffster - what's with more of the flying?! Now I'm curious as to why Twilight has the responsibility of averting this impending disaster.
-Oooh kay, obviously Twilight knows Buffy and know how her mind works. Nice mask lift - TEASE! Buffy says he has power she's never seen - um, Glory?? Hell God?
-There's the "I'm all alone" bit again. Well, it might have something to do with the fact that there is only supposed to be ONE slayer. Though it would suck to feel alienated with this huge group that you're devoting your life to.
Those covers are done by Jo Chen, and yes she does an incredible job!! The variant covers are mostly done by Georges Jeanty (who does the inside art), although there are occasionally other artists (like the 3rd cover of The Chain). Are you reading via individual issues or the TPB?
-Buffy's narrative: She truly believes she did something "good" by making all of those slayers. Ok - but isn't that what threw the universe all out of whack, or am I just making that up? I love that she calls Caleb a moron. What an emotional stab going from Buffy "moving forward to something better" while training her slayers, to the opposite of Simone creating anarchy. Ugh.
Yes, and I'll be honest and say that at the time I thought the idea of the Scythe spell was genius, and empowering. But as we learned in season 6 there are always tradeoffs to using powerful magicks. I really think they do a good job of showing that in season 8. Besides the fact that when creating the Scythe spell, Joss seems to have forgotten the world of Fray! Somehow he has to get from a world full of empowered Slayers to none, to just one again.
-So, the world knows about Buffy & Co. robbing that bank? And that's why they're against the Slayers? I can see people being mad about it, but if they know about the fighting of the evil, I would think donations would start pouring in. In addition, if people know about it, Buffy really needs to work on her covert ops.
-I find it interesting how Buffy gets excited about slaying now. I think about in S4 when she reamed Riley out for saying the job was kind of fun, and now look at how she is!
-Ooo, Twilight, calling Buffy out! He knows her moves? That's interesting - fought her before, has he?? Ok, he clarified the too many slayers thing for me. He sure can wail on the Buffster - what's with more of the flying?! Now I'm curious as to why Twilight has the responsibility of averting this impending disaster.
-Oooh kay, obviously Twilight knows Buffy and know how her mind works. Nice mask lift - TEASE! Buffy says he has power she's never seen - um, Glory?? Hell God?

I actually think I know who it is - I accidentally stumbled on a spoiler a looong while back, when I first started on BB and was perusing the threads. But I'm not positive, and I'm not going to look again!!
