Week 5 - Chapters 21-25 Discussion

Got to chapter 25 in one go and now I'm a bit uncertain what happened when so I go directly here to avoid spoilers.

Not a huge fan of Mal's flashbacks actually, feels like I zone out during those chapters.
Think it's the love triangle thingy... not often I found that stuff interesting.
I really hope it's not old lover grudge that motivates that Toby guy. That's seems silly to me.

That leads to my next complain, this you should know so I'm not gonna tell you what you did nonsenses.
I mean, it's obvious that Mal doesn't understand why they capture him. So why not just tell him?
It's just to hold us on suspense. But it just looks stupid to me.

But I like it so far. Always enjoyed Zoë and Wash relationship. Just a good couple without too much drama.
They had some nice interaction in these chapters.

Inara is getting involved finally also.
Book, Inara, River and Simon seems like an unlikely team for a rescue operation. But I find it kinda fun. 🙂

Of course its gonna be an old lover’s grudge thing, sigh
I’ll be honest, the book has lost me. Juggling a Mal plot, a Book plot, a crew plot, and a Flashback plot, has worn thin.

I wish the Shadow back story was a complete prequel novel, that we would get to spend more time with the characters, get to know and care for them, and all that. Because the love triangle feels as obvious as it is stale, and while I feel like Mal isnt the type to mention people from his past (so I’m fine with this being the first time hearing about it) it all feels too rushed and I’m bored and disconnected from all the plots.

I’m just gonna push through and finish this. The girl Mal and Toby loved is gonna die, we get it, just get on with it.

I was actually fading in the last chapters, but was much more engaged with these ones lol. I liked that River wasn’t just a nuisance in Book’s mission. “Oh Simon & River really messed things up!” The asteroids or whatever did seem a little convenient. I was less interested in this flashback, but I kind of like that Mal wasn’t the guy that was picked. I do want them to cut to the chase about what Mal did though.

I liked that Inara, River and Simon were the ones to go and help.

Think the Alliance boarding was still a storyline unneeded, but I guess it got the Tams off ship so they could go help Book. However it was a bit too easy to have River just tell Book where the girl was.
