Week 7: Objects in Space

Good episode. It's even better when watched correctly (as the last episode of the series), as there are a few comments in the three episodes aired later that are referenced.

Unfortunately, all the growth we see in relationships by the end of this episode seems to vanish in Serenity.
 
I thought this was a good one to end a season (as opposed to a series) on, despite that it's far more powerful when you don't know what's coming. But, I guess being tired, I only feel like mentioning trivial details.

There's another hint (two actually) that Book is himself a potentially dangerous individual with a secret past. I hope to read the comic one day that is supposed to expand on his backstory.

A detail I THINK I saw is in the early 12th minute mark, between when Simon asks Kaylee if she doesn't see River as a person, the scene going down to show River balancing on rails, apparently paying attention to the meeting above. As the view went between decks (transitioning scenes) it really looked like there was an alien bug (antenna and wings twitching). If I'm seeing it right, it was a nice if trivial easter egg. It would make sense that such would happen. (And adds to Kaylee soon after telling Simon, "Don't let the space bugs bite!" And then kicking herself for saying it, but maybe it really was something to worry about.)

Another trivial detail, River again repeats what was said to her earlier with "No touching guns."

I'll end by saying I'd be so annoyed if even in deep space there were still home intruders.

This is a good one.
The beginning feels a bit too abstract for my taste and the bounty hunter is annoyingly self confident and try to hard sounding smart with some "deep" thoughts.

But I love the transition when River completely outsmarts him, a lot thanks to her mind reading abilities, and he becomes more and more uncertain about himself.
Guess it feels a bit like putting a bully in his place. That always make me smile.

Also really like the ending. The camera panning around the ship with the crew just doing some fairly normal interactions.
A nice way to end the show imho.

Would really suck to not see this is in correct order. I've never watched it as it aired. Might be an interesting experience one day.
But I'm happy it wasn't my first experience of the show.

Every terraformed planet would need an ecosystem. i would speculate that they would genetically engineer generalist species capable of surviving in the greatest number of environments. If life existed in the verse before the migration, I missed that part.

Yeah, we never see alien life, and that includes plant life. Presumably the terraforming process creates/brings along earth-based life.
 
River wandering around hearing people's thoughts. I initially thought she was doing it mentally too, as no-one seemed to be reacting to her presence. Then she picks up a stick which turns out to be a gun. Mal saying if he wanted medical jargon, he'd talk to a doctor. Simon points out that he is. And they are not alone.

Kaylee revealing what River did, which makes everyone wonder what to do with her. Mal correctly guesses she can read minds.

And then the bounty hunter. Not a nice piece of work. I wanted him to die horribly. I guess he kind of did, I knew his name was familiar, and not from this.

River is Serenity and Serenity is very unhappy. Nice to see her totally outsmart Early.

I don't know when this was originally aired in the series, but at any other point a lot of the comments would have made zero sense.
