So in these chapters the story gets tied up in a neat bow…what did you think of the ending?

I liked the book a lot more until these chapters. I found it hard to believe that Wash would take such a gamble with Zoe’s life to suggest putting all the boxes in the tunnel. Toby’s super sudden remorse felt fake. The whole he’s dying, so he’s going to spend his last moments on a convoluted plan of revenge didn’t seem likely. That they so easily left all those browncoats to die seemed ridiculous. At least they explained what happened to Elmira.

I liked the book as a whole and it was much better than I thought an adaptation would be. But the ending took it from 4 stars to 3 in my eyes.

I also disliked Toby’s regret, like, he was ready to murder Mal five minutes earlier… it would’ve been better if he just stuck to his ideas. I kind of liked that Jayne dealt with him

Mostly what I’m taking away from this book is how hard I laughed at the idea that a missile would obliterate a cowshed with weapons, burn a person to a crisp, so hot that they can’t even collect the body in a while, and yet - yet - the locket around her neck and its homing beacon, completely fine. Lol! Not contrived at all.

I did find it interesting that Mal’s matching beacon was in a cross. Felt somehow fitting for how he is later when one meets him in the series.

Probably a 2 star for me

Yeah, I agree with the regret thing. The whole Toby story in general wasn't that great imo.
Really wished that it could have been some other reason for Mal's kidnapping than some old lovers grudge.
Those Browncoats just come across as extremely easy duped and just stupid.

But it wasn't worse than your average, filler, episode. 🙂

Overall I think the book did a good job with characters that I love from the show.
In many ways it really did feel like an episode of the show.
Must admit that I had expected a longer and more epic story than we got. Thought it would be more like a movie than an episode. lol
Not sure how common this are. The Buffy books we read before felt more like TV movie at least.
Don't mind it really. It just wasn't exactly what I thought it would be.

It was nice getting into the verse again.
Might do a rewatch after this. 🙂

lol, that is a very good point.
Can't honestly say I thought that much about it when I read it though...

/SK

It was okay, the ending was a letdown, I thought they'd have tried more the not kill all the Browncoats.

I also didn't really feel like Kaylee would disable a ship knowing that it would kill the guy.
