Weird Al and Lady Gaga

So I am HUGE Weird Al fan. Like, I play accordion, snuck backstage to a concert once, met him, and he signed my accordion (i have pics to prove it!). And when I saw Weird Al had a new song out, I was escatic!

Well, legally, Weird Al is allowed to write a parody of any song he wants and release it without the consent of the original artist. Because he is super classy, he always gets permission. He usually asks permission, gets it, then writes the song. Why waste the time and money writing and recording if you can't release it? Well, he asked Lady Gaga for permission and her first answer was, "I have to hear it." He figure he'd write the song for her. So even on tour, he wrote the lyrics and sent them to her. She said she needed to hear it. Which is weird. His lyrics + your music = the song. So, he went ahead and recorded it, sent it to her and she said no. So now he spent all this time jumping through hoops and she didn't give her blessing.

He even realized her original song had a lot to do with human activist rights so if the song had been released, all the proceeds would have gone to the Human Rights Campaign which would have been a TREMENDOUS help to a cause Lady Gaga is all for.

Anyway, I love Weird Al and have always really loved Lady Gaga, but after all this, I am just so disappointed with her. What are you guys' thoughts?

From what I hear, Gaga's camp is denying that she's even had a chance to hear the song yet because she's so busy touring, so I'm thinking it's probably been some kind of miscommunication. Either that, or her legal people got a little overzealous. I find it hard to believe that she'd personally say no. She's never seemed particularly possessive over her music in the same way as a lot of other artists.

After putting my Lady Gaga parody on YouTube this morning – and announcing that it wouldn’t be on my next album because Gaga didn’t approve it – there was a huge outpouring of disappointment from the Internet.

Apparently the fact that she didn’t approve it was news to Lady Gaga herself!

Gaga’s manager has now admitted that he never forwarded my parody to Gaga – she had no idea at all. Even though we assumed that Gaga herself was the one making the decision (because, well, that’s what we were TOLD), he apparently made the decision completely on his own.

He’s sorry.

And Gaga loves the song.

I’m thrilled on many levels to hear this, because 1) I truly respect and admire Gaga as an artist and it pained me to think of her as having less than a great sense of humor, and 2) it means I GET TO PUT OUT MY ALBUM!

As promised, all my proceeds from the song (and the MUSIC VIDEO… I can’t wait…) will go to the Human Rights Campaign.

So...I guess it's coming out now? Good news for fans of both artists.
 
Glad the story came out about Gaga not knowing anything about it, and agreeing for it to go ahead. Don't see why she wouldn't.
 
Yea, I am so happy to hear that Gaga likes the song! After how supportive she is of Glee doing her songs, I figured she'd be ok with Weird Al parodying one. Very happy this story has a happy ending!
