Someone posted this on another forum and I wanted to hear you guys' thoughts on this:
Xander has been punched out by each of Buffy's main love interests.

Angel in "Enemies"

Riley in "Buffy vs Dracula"

Spike in "Sleeper"

I wonder why they put this in? I guess maybe the writers thought it would be a funny gag, like Giles getting knocked out?

I can't really remember the Spike punch... It was in Xander's appartment right? Was it exactly the same kind of punch he received from the others two?

Spike wanted to go out and Xander wouldn't let him go so Spike knocked him out. ^_^
That is interesting, but I guess I never noticed it because Xander, like Giles, gets knocked out a lot.

And, the Angel punch was meant as a gag (and as a way to try and fool the audience into thinking he was evil again.) I don't really remember the other two.
 
Yep, I knew that. Well, it could intentional from the writers...Buffy lovers punch Xander all the time or it's just casual but the first option would be interesting...since he never shut uo about her relationships, he gets knocked out. LOL ..The only time I thought he was great butting in was in "Into The Woods"..I loved his speech.
 
I think it's just purely for fun. I don't think it had to be Buffy's love interests. It's more like coincidence because no one else(Giles, Willow, Cordy, Tara, Anya, etc.) can punch Xander like that. Oh, Oz punched him too, but he didn't get knocked out.
 
They're all similar too, cold-cocks played for laughs, done not out of malevolence so much as "get out of my way". And yeah I think it speaks a lot to Xander's relationship with Buffy and to male machismo. Boyfriends can tolerate male friends, but there's always a level of tension between them.

It is so weird I never noticed this. I always laugh though at the Angel moment. Poor Xander.
 
Aw, poor Xander. Though he used to give Angel a hard time in the past and punched Spike a few times, what's Riley's excuse for punching him? *glares at Riley*

While I feel for Xander, Riley had to "rescue" Giles and Xander was Draculas butt monkey at that time so...
 
Yeah I'm not usually one to stick up for Riley, but Xander was mind-controlled at that time and so it was for his own good. Angel had to do it to keep up the act of pretending to be Angelus. I don't remember Spike... was he being controlled by the First at that point?

Anyway, I don't think it was intentional, just a funny coincidence.
 
I know this isn't really the point, but I don't think Angel 'had' to punch Xander, lol. Like he said: "That guy just bugs me." 😛

I was joking. 🙂 I love Riley. I think of all of them, Spike was the one who had no excuse to punch him. Buffy ordered Xander to keep Spike in his apartment, Spike wanted to leave. He could have used vampire-speed to go past Xander. There was no need to punch him at all, especially when he knew the chip would fire.

Angel was pretending to be Angelus, and punching Xander saved Xander's life and it was a bonus for Angel's petty reasons. Riley needed to save Giles, and Xander was under Dracula's thrall.

I think vampire-speed is definitely underused in the Buffyverse. It's used more on ATS than on Buffy, but definitely more in other vampire-oriented shows & movies.
