I decided to watch the first Buffy episode last night for the first time in a while and I noticed a few oddities.

When Buffy and Xander bump into each other a stake falls out of her bag. If she is starting a new life from the one she had in L A, then why the stake?

There is a scene in one of the school corridors where Giles is trying to convince Buffy about being the slayer:

For something that is secret , why is he doing the convincing in public?

And he grabbed her shoulder plus pushed over to a wall (it may have been gentle, not the point), should he, a member of staff, treated a studant this way?

One amusing point when the body is found in the locker:

'What kinda name is Buffy?'

'Hi Aphrodisia'

She was probably carrying the stake more for self protection than with any idea of resuming her duties as Slayer. After all, she KNEW that all of those bad things were out there, whereas very few "normal" people did.

She wanted to hold onto the stake, it was her Miss Pointy. Either that or she saw it as a keeps(t)ake.
When Giles pushed Buffy against the wall, he did it as her Watcher, not a librarian.

I have often looked at these same things and wondered... I think the stake was more for protection than the fact that she planned to be on active slay duty. After all, she already had them lying around, so to speak, so why not carry one "just in case"? 🙂
I think the name thing was poking fun at the fact that not just Buffy, but ALL the "main" characters in the show had "weird" names: Buffy, Willow, Xander, Rupert Giles... None of them had any plane Janes or Johns. 😉
The Giles boundary issues thing I have actually created a thread for before, I do believe, or at least commented on before. This always bothered me that he was so in her personal space at first, but I notice that after the first couple eps, he never does that again and I do believe Joss says something to the effect of it being misconstrued as being "creepy" in the commentary...

I think at this point in their relationship, Giles didn't quite view her as a real human being but more or less and the slayer and that as her watcher, he was just trying to assert his role as mentor and disciplinarian. After spending all his adult life buried in books and mastering the theoretical, he still had a lot to learn about proper social interaction but thankfully he learned quickly.

I agree with you, infact all the comments, but I would have to say that Giles was lucky that his zeal for being her watcher and I think new to the job didn't get him into some trouble. These days he would have been hauled off on attempted assault charge or worse, the lawyers would have made quite a bit of cash:lmao:

I tend to notice these things alot too, and i think Why?
especially in Charmed, it's quite bad for ' unrealistic behavior' blabla..
It's still brilliant though 🙂
