Really!? That's how you end the series?! That's total B.S. you can't just leave me in suspense like this. Do Angel and the others live? Now I'll never find out. Damn it all.
 
Well, the metaphor is that the fight always goes on 🙂.

In terms of canon, they do survive, or at least, some of them do. You should check out the Angel: After the Fall comic book series, it's really good.

Personally, I loved the ending to Angel. I wasn't expecting it at all, and I was pretty stunned at first, but after a little time I thought it was the perfect ending to Angel. They'd wrapped him and Buffy pretty well in "Chosen" (even though I did really want more of Buffy in Angel S5), and the whole Shanshu Prophecy was always a sort of reaching goal. It was more fitting seeing him not get it. It's kind of like his relationship with Buffy. Someday, when the fighting's done and the wars are won, they'll be together, and the prophecy will come true.
 
I particularly liked how Angel feigned signing away his rights under the Shanshu prophecy - he wrote Anger, not Angel, and the rest of the demons missed it. They would not have had a chance to re-read it and demand a correction because they were all going to be dead soon. If there had been another season, I'm sure that would have been worth an episode, if not an entire story arc.

I am also of the opinion that they had ended the Buffy series at the right time, but Angel could have gone on for another year at least.

Angel had years left in the tank. Frankly, it was a travesty that it ended when it did.

I always assumed that Angel signing away the Shanshu Prophecy, while a great and symbolic gesture about how much his mission means to him, didn't mean much. Maybe that was just me, but I always felt like the Powers that Be would have understood the situation.

I absolutely hated that ending, and the deus ex machina "explanation" for how hey managed to escape in "After The Fall" was even worse. About the only way that they could have gotten any lower would have been to have Angel somehow make another deal to erase the whole thing and move everybody back to a time before it all happened. Of course, they basicalli saved THAT one for the ending of the "After The Fall" arc, so I'm obviously not too thrilled about that one either.

The ending of "Buffy" was just short of perfect.(The only thing that could have made it better would have been to have Kennedy and Wood die instead of Spike and Anya.) It's hard to believe that the same man wrote both stories. It's because of that very thing that Joss is no longer invited to my house for Saturday night kitten poker.
 
First time I finsished the show I was more or less furious, or as close to furious that I get, about the ending. Now I like it. A lot. Not saying it'll change for others but give it time, let it sink in.
 
I love the ending, I love ''not knowing'' (I say that because I've read the comics) But for me the point is that not knowing is the good part of the end of the series, it gives me a great deal of satisfaction in fact to leave it up to speculation.

Always makes me think of Faith's:
"Should've been there B, quite the ride..."

It was the absolute perfect ending for the show. Angel is all about how you fight the good fight because it's the right thing to do. It doesn't matter whether you win or lose, as long as you keep fighting. AtS is supposed to be a metaphor for adulthood. You talk about how you'll never conform, how you'll do everything in your power to fight the "evil" and "corrupt" system, and then before you know it...you've joined them. Angel decides that he's going to fight back, not to win, but to make a point. He knows that they'll never be able to defeat the senior partners, because evil never stops. It will always exist. He does it because he decides that he's not going to give up. He is not going out without a fight.

That's what I took from it anyway. I love Not Fade Away. I'd honestly rather go out fighting, than to let the enemy win. I mean technically they did win, because there was no way to stop the senior partners, but Angel and the others did exactly what they set out to do. They killed the members of The Black Thorn to make a point. Sorry I'm kind of rambling and I'm procrastinating right now....so in other words I'm multi-tasking, but if you watch the season 5 overview Joss gives a better explanation of the season/finale.

Ugh I love the ending so much. When I first saw it I was like, "Wait, no. NO!" but then I thought about it and did a re-watch and it's just perfection. It's such an epic ending oh man I love that show. Also, Chosen was a great (and super cheesy, yes I will admit that) ending for Buffy because it sums up just about everything (let's just ignore the plot holes for now, okay??) Buffy can stop fighting now. She can lead a normal life. Of couuurse that's not how it *really* ends but I refuse to read the comics so it's over for me, OKAY!?

It meant everything. If he had continued to fight because he knew that he was getting something out of it, it wouldn't have been the same. It wouldn't have been as meaningful. Signing away what he wanted more than anything was perfect. It wouldn't really be redemption if he was doing it all for a prize.

Sorry, I should clarify. I think it meant the world to Angel, but maybe not so much to the Powers. I should have stated that better. I fully believe that Angel was willing to give away his shot for being human again, and what you said about the metaphor makes perfect sense.

I meant more that it would be pretty cruel of the Powers that Be to to disregard everything and take that chance away from him forever (which, as we see in the comics, they didn't). I know you said you don't read the comics, but you should really give After the Fall a shot. It's pretty awesome.

Oh okay, yeah I agree that him signing away the prophecy makes him even more worthy, and the Powers should totally recognize that. And noooo haha I don't want to read them! Although I swore I'd never, ever watch AtS and I finally caved after like 10 years 😉 so who knows. I just know that I'll get sucked in ugh. Maybe I'll read them when I'm 60 and have nothing else to do but knit and go skydiving.
 
Haven't even read the comics continuation, and I loved the ending. Reminded me of Animorphs.

I honestly don't remember the finale. I've only seen it when it aired on tv way back. I do know that it ended pretty abruptly like "Thats it?" So I can't really comment.

But I just need to ask, I remember Illyria said Gunn wouldn't last 10 minutes, Wesley died, and I think Lorne left? Did they actually survive that fight? I haven't read the comics. Did Cordelia have any significance in the comics? Like a reappearance or something?

Gunn was vamped before he died, & Wesley comes back to Angel as a sort of guide from W&H. Cordy makes an appearance, sort of. and Lorne does help out the gang. LA was sent into a hell dimension, but time was reset at the end of the first After The Fall run, so no more Wesley & Gunn is human again, but left with the memories of all he had done as a vampire).

I suggest you head into the Angel After the fall section of the boards. Or use the search engine to find specific posts or threads.

As maddening as it is in the beginning, I think with some perspective you'll agree that it's a really fitting ending to Angel's story. The overall theme of AtS was that you never stop fighting, so of course the last shot would be of them all doing just that.

Buffy was all about hope for the future - it's what kept everyone going, the belief that they'd win and move on to the next phase. Angel, I don't believe, ever had this hope. It's also worth noting that in the end, it's the demons that are left standing - Illyria, Angel, and Spike (Gunn is as good as dead) for only demons could survive in this post-apocalptic world.

The story doesn't end there, you know. You could always read After The Fall if you want to see how the continues.
