Were Giles and Robin Wood wrong?

In the end he was no big deal, he brought nothing unique to the fight.

Really? I must have imagined the whole burning on the Hellmouth thing then, 🙂

Spike could've worn anything, he had other clothes, but he chose to wear that coat. It was a statement- back to his old, bad self-remmeber Buffy told him to become that guy, and like a good dog he did

Yes, Buffy ASKED HIM to.

Or are we in 'Spike fans make up stuff to make Angel look bad' terriotory again, I can never tell.

Remember souled Angel killed innocent, heroic Drogyn which only resulted in bringing down the apocalypse on LA...

a quick search shows the mansion was abandoned, and funnily enough something you've been corrected on before - https://www.buffy-boards.com/archive/index.php/t-62027.html

and to quote myself(im my own source!):

Even if they had, I dont think it'd be that weird, it's like saying, he should have left Sunnydale cuz thats the town where he killed people, Buffy should have sold the house as her mom died in their living room, Willow shouldn't have come back to Sunnydale cuz thats were she killed Warren or Spike shouldn't have stayed in Buffy house since thats where he tried to rape her. There's too much of that for something so small to be morbid.

What part of my statement of him not bringing anything unique to that battle you having a problem with?

Err he wore the amulet and had a soul that could cope with it long enough before finally burning up.

But hey as I said before with all the incredible hate flying around here I doubt whatever anyone said you'd still dismiss it. 😀

Silverspike

It's not Spike, it's the amulet. The description says someone ensouled, but stronger than human — a Champion - that means Buffy, Faith, Angel, every activated ( or not? ) potential, possibly Willow, Dawn, Anya, Andrew and Giles.

But hey as I said before with all the incredible hate flying around here I doubt whatever anyone said you'd still dismiss it.

Hate is passion. Enthusiasts hate because they just care so much. When you bitch about hate you ask us to stop being so passionate about the stuff we love.

How about no?

It's like saying Ben was evil just because he lived with Glory and for no other reason.
I mean, give me a f**king break. 🙄

Isn't this exactly what people are saying about Spike right now?

"It's like saying Spike was evil just because he lived in a vampire's body that could be controlled by the First" (I'm not aiming this at you, just a general comment in response to some arguments in this thread)

Yes, I see why they wanted to kill Spike. Yes, I see why it's not acceptable, or at least not ethical for Spike to wear his bad ass coat. But Spike in s7 didn't deserve death anymore than Ben did. A decision is a decision, I think it was morally wrong for Wood or Giles to kill Spike.

Even if it was the best thing to do, they did it for all the wrong reasons (mainly Wood) which is exactly what moral is. And reasons are very important in a scenario like this. It makes the difference between Giles killing an innocent to save the world (can be debated as morally acceptable) vs. Wood killing an innocent (Spike had never killed on purpose post-soul) for revenge (morally wrong). And here, I'm using the word innocent only in reference to them killing someone, of course, neither is innocent concerning other mistakes, but for the killing, it wasn't Spike's doing.

Nope, I only dismiss a point when there's no source. Speaking of, do you have a source for the "a soul that could cope with it long enough before finally burning up" part of your statement, that is not something I remember as a fact from the show.

The only fact for the amulet is it had to be worn by someone more than human, with a soul. Since camp Buffy had that in spades - again what was unique that Spike did?

Without Buffy, there is no idea.
Without Willow there is no spell.
Without the Scythe there is no resource.
Without Spike...there is Angel, there is Buffy, there is Faith, after those 3 we get into sketchy territory, is Willow more than human since she is a witch? Is anya more than human being an ex-demon and over 1000 years old? Is Dawn more than human being a ball of energy? Are the potentials more than human? by the time the amulet is needed, they are 100% more than human and with souls.

So again, what unique thing did he bring

Also dismissing someone for hating a character isn't true when they have points!

If I reply saying a negative point, which is backed up in canon, that is not hating that debating.

If I were replying saying Giles and Wood totally should have killed Spike cuz he's an ass thats hating.

This thread has FAR more automatic defence of Spike just becasue it's Spike, with no backed up points than it does people "hating" on Spike.
Replying to a post saying someone is "hating" without counter-pointing any of the points, or replying saying "well here's a list of stuff Angel did wrong" is the other side of "hating" - "loving"?"Defending"? not sure if blind defence of a character has a term?

Yeah, yeah, yeah...
Long replies are OK. The forum is designed to add up to your last post if there is no replies in between.

It is late here and I am not feeling like replying to every point , so I will be brief.

So to summarize it briefly :

* As of beginning of S7 Spike is no champion of good, he is schisophrenic mess. He has potential to go both ways. The show quite effectively proves how easily he is overtaken by the First and made to kill the innocents. He barely scrambles to keep his s**t together by mid-season. The show gives no guarantees that he becomes a champion. There is absolutely no rationale for anybody to 'believe in Spike' after learning he killed dozens of innocents and still ahs a trigger in his head. You seem to ignore these points completely.

* Giles was not doing the work of the First when he attempted to remove Spike. The First is opportunistic by nature. Putting the trigger into Spike's head makes no sense whatsoever *if* the First wants Spike dusted. Triggered Spike is there to (1) saw discord and chaos and kill innocents, and (2) to make attempt on removing Buffy if opportunity presents itself. Giles is absolutely right to suspect the latter and has no reason to trust in Spike blindly. He treats Spike the same way he treated Ben because he sees Spike as Ben of this season - a liability and danger.

* I do not find blind loyalty an attractive feature. That's why I adore Giles and forgive him his deception.

* I believe that Giles' opinion matters as much as Buffy's , because of his experience. He has a point of view that is different from hers and he has every right to act on it. If it brings them in conflict - it is entirely not OOC for Giles and it neither is it a bias. Giles always behaved this way. When he is trying to remove Spike he is no way undermining her 'authority'. He is in fact trying to uphold it. It is her who is undermining herself by acting irrationally and compromising herself in the eyes of her every supporter.

* The fact that it turns 'allright' in the end is a 'deux out of the machina' ending - there is a 50/50 chance than Spike won't turn on her - in the eyes of the audience as the season unfolds.

* Head canon or not but it is a fact that Whedon knew he is killing Spike by noble sacrifice in the end - therefore he cared not much for motivations. Stokholm syndrome is my best explanation for Buffy's acting the way she did in S7 - yes, Spike did abduct her and chained her in a basement once - next to Dru. 🙂 But mostly I explain her weird behavior with her internal need for absolution - she was the one who used Spike for sex and treated him as a glorified vibrator on evil steroids. In S7 this guilt turns into desire to help the newly souled and now a 'person' Spike.

* I have no idea where the idea that Buffy 'luved Spike more' and that's why she have not dusted him in S7 came from. Spuffies can twist everything to their point , so I won't even answer that.

PS

Spike is being played by the First that takes Buffy's shape in the End of Days/Chosen - after her smoochies with Angel, and the audience is left to believe he might still turn on her out of jealousy.

*! - Agreed completely - until Spike turns himself into Buffy, and then begs her to kill him, twice. Once Buffy tells Spike she believes in him we, the audience, are in the same position as anyone on the screen. Do we believe Buffy? Or do we do what the First clearly wants?

*2 Yes, the First is opportunistic. And It has not been able to make Spike attack since the scene in the basement where Spike was snapped out of it's control by tasting Buffy's blood. Spike is already a huge player because he was pure evil but now he has gone and gotten his soul - making him a real force for good. Afraid he might lose Spike entirely, the First wants to cut his losses. That is the only reason the First would go to Wood at least twice. The first wants Spike dead. Giles - knowing this is being done for vengeance (evil) not only allows bu facilitates - Giles is doing the work of the First. Not sure where you get the remove Buffy - never saw anything about that.

*3 Yes, blind loyalty, particularly in groups, is a terrifying force. One person in a large group - not so bad. Disloyalty and aiding the enemy are generally reasons for execution in war. Oh, and I love Giles too!

*4 No - if Buffy is being irrational and compromising herself then she should not be a leader - not even a figurehead - and Giles should work to get her out of control of the army. Giles knows he is doing the work of the enemy, shown by the fact that rather than do it openly he is diverting his putative commander to give time for the murder to be committed. In a real war this would be grounds for execution. Once Giles expressed his reservations and Buffy turned him down he was bound to take her side in the conflict and not work behind her back - regardless of his rationale. This is war - he has agreed to that. Technically speaking - working against Buffy is disloyalty, sabotage and treason.

*5 - Not sure where you get those figures. Those who follow and support Buffy have faith that she is right, even if they are uncertain. God of the machine - Doylist.

*6 - I like your rationale for Buffy helping Spike, I never put the two together but it ha a nice resonance. But that in itself is doing good - both seeking redemption for the ways they hurt each other. In this paradigm Evil is a conscious force - the counterbalance to Evil is Good.

*7 First off - I'm not big into pejorative group names. I have friends who are Spuffy and ones who are Bangel. They're great people and even friends of each other. I am neither. My point was that by theorizing that Buffy was unable to simply throw off the influence of Spike is making Spike too important - moreso than even Angel was. I don't see Spike even once trying to influence her - even with the chip he doesn't ask to have it out but allows her to decide. So this one is on Buffy's shoulders. By my take, you either follow her even if you doubt, or you say Spike is all powerful and Buffy is hi puppet.

*PS - Yes, and Spike not only doesn't fall for her, he doesn't even hide that he was a witness, nor does he threaten to do anything. In a Watsonian way he clearly passes the test.

Romantic Soul - Season 2 is part of the same show as season 7. The character are showing how much they are the same and how much they have changed. It seems to me that they aer always being compared - at least in the form of Bangel and Spuffy. To say that Spike was able to turn Buffy into his puppet, to take away her rationality and wisdom, is to say Spike had a stronger influence on Buffy than Angel. I'm kinda bewildered by Scoobies killing and maiming so I think I will do a Xander, raise hands and back away from the conversation.

So, what Angelus did doesn't all;y to Angel, but what pre-soul Spike DOES apply to Spike after he got his soul'

Thanks for clearing that little matter up.

Topher - all Giles had to do was walk down stairs while everyone was asleep and Spike was chained, and stake Spike. And yes - regardless of your rationale - arranging to put someone into the control of another whose stated purpose is murder - while you keep your leader busy is both murder and treason. Evil, in other words.

This, what makes the situation wrong is the morality behind it, the reasoning, not even the act of killing a vampire in itself

You have a point but you can be passionate about something and keep a critical distance too. You can also be passionate about an opinion and not take yourself so seriously as well. Getting really worked up and angry about something like a debate (as unimportant in the grand scheme of things as this debate) is taking yourself too seriously IMO.

I'm not saying you or anyone else is losing it in this thread, it's just your comment caught my eye.

Seige - Wood lost his right to revenge when he signed on to follow Buffy against the First Evil. Yes, he had some dramatic reasons to take action - but we are dealing with Evil and Good.

Spike isn't a "big player", Spike doesn't seem to have been a big player in the way that Daral, Angelus and the Master were, he's never had an interest in it, he's never been the Big Bad, he's famously all talk.
He's also never been a big player for good. He has no mission, no higher purpose, good isn't seeking him out. He just follows Buffy or Angel around.

You are incorrect about him not turning again once he tastes Buffy. He is triggered again when the First wants him to kill Andrew.

You are assuming to know the Firsts plan, what better place is Spike positioned in than in the house were all the potentials are living? Why would he want Spike dead, when he has an active bomb just waiting to go off inside the enemies base???

Isn't it far more likely he'd want Robin to go after Spike, creating hostility within Buffys camp. Her potential slayer army sees her defending a serial killer who is under the control of the thing trying to kill them.
Her arm stop respecting her - this is what actually happens.
Why would the First think Robin could kill Spike? Robin isn't as good a fighter as Spike?

*3 Yes, blind loyalty, particularly in groups, is a terrifying force. One person in a large group - not so bad. Disloyalty and aiding the enemy are generally reasons for execution in war. Oh, and I love Giles too!
When the leader is the one person in a group it is so bad.

This is exactly what happens! Buffys irrationality leads to her bring oust as leader!

*5 - Not sure where you get those figures. Those who follow and support Buffy have faith that she is right, even if they are uncertain. God of the machine - Doylist.
Again, no they dont. They ask her to step down.

I agree. I was trying to be marginally nicer by vagueing it up. So I'll reclarify, there were far more replies from silverspike just automatically defending Spike with no actual factual points and calling the opposing person, with a number of points, a hater.

Thanks for clearing that little matter up.

Wait does that mean you've changed your opinion that Spike is great for getting his soul whereas Angel is cursed with his? That would mean pre-soul Spike going to get a soul has NO meaning for post soul Spike.
It should also mean, no Spike fan should ever using a good thing Spike does pre soul as a valid point.

No fan is more in love with a presoul/post soul double standard like a Spike fan.

---------- Post added at 11:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:19 PM ----------

Except for an Angel fan...

Name a double standard not backed up within the story I've ever used?

Romantic Soul - Season 2 is part of the same show as season 7. The character are showing how much they are the same and how much they have changed.
S2 is a whole other animal than S7. And LMPTM is in S7. Unless I missed something in the episode where an event from S2 was mentioned.

It seems to me that they aer always being compared - at least in the form of Bangel and Spuffy.
As I said it's not part of the topic. Angel has no place in this discussion unless I missed the intent of your topic.

Interesting to put words in my mouth I never even said. Buffy was Spike's puppet? Color me confused as to when I said that. Spike was Buffy's lapdog to the point where he cared more about pleasing her (wear the coat Spike, be a monster, don't leave town) than doing what's right. My argument was the way Buffy was written like she was insane in her defense of Spike. Where is the puppet part?

Aside from Dawn was there any Scoobie who wasn't a murderer, attempted murderer or otherwise guilty of some crime they suffered no punishment for?

P.S to those who think I'm hating on Spike: I'm not. I can only hate/love characters. I don't waste my energy on a fake persona. If he ever grows some balls and sheds the 'Spike' persona to show us the actual person underneath then I can love/hate him. What I actually hate is the writers need to push this persona front and center and twist the characters and relationships beyond recognition in oder to achieve that. I hate the effect Spike had on other characters (first and foremost Buffy)/relationsships/the morality of the show, etc. and not Spike himself.

These are different circumstances to those they now live under, therefore they are more trustworthy that a man who literally cannot control himself. or his actions.

And if the circumstances were to return? If someone else Willow loves is murdered, how do we know she won't try to end the world again? If Anya is jilted again, how do we know she won't ask to be turned into a vengeance demon again? In Anya's case, she's actually spent by far the majority of her 1000 years of life as a killer--it is not unreasonable to assume that one day she may choose to become that person again.

Unless your saying, deep down, that Spike can resist the trigger (like he did with Buffy) but that would mean that Spike, on some level, is responsible for all those deaths and sirings on behalf of the First.
I mean, I don't believe that because it clearly looked like he couldn't control himself, but maybe you think differently, so which is it?

Obviously I completely agree that Spike couldn't control himself. I am simply making the argument that one who cannot control himself but can be restrained with chains until the element that is controlling him is removed, (and remember we have no reason to believe it can't be,) is less dangerous--certainly more predictable--than a bunch of former killers who began killing suddenly and reformed almost as quickly, and very recently to boot.

So hey, if Giles wants to take ALL of them out, for the safety of the world or whatever, then fine. That would be solid logic. If could have said, "You know what, we've got an entire house here of former killers and I just don't know when any of them are going to snap again. One is so dangerous that she almost created an apocalypse, one was a demon for 1000 years, one killed his best friend, and one is a newly souled vampire who is temporarily being controlled by another source. Let's just get rid of the lot of them and we'll be safe." While I would have heartily disagreed with his position, at least where logic and consistency are concerned, I couldn't fault his reasoning.

The thing about the coat being a tribute or some nonsense- I might've believed that if Spike made any mention of thinking that, or indeed if for one moment he showed any remorse for killing either of the slayers, but he doesn't- because apparently; 'that's the way the game is played'.

Well here you're combining two separate trains of thought. One is his reasoning for wearing the coat, or lack thereof, and the other is what he said to Wood. The former is unknown to us, and that is my point. I say it's symbolic and doesn't show a lack of remorse, you say it's disgusting. But he DOESN'T tell us which it is so as I said in my previous thread, all we can do is speculate.

The matter of what he said to Wood is indeed separate. The fact that he believes that "that's the way the game is played" in the first place doesn't address the coat. But to the next point:

He said those words, he meant them, I wish people would stop trying to make excuses for his actions in this episode- just call him a heartless jerk, or maybe say that he was taunting Wood and didn't actually believe what he was saying. (I believe he was entirely sincere.) Maybe he was just being a shit to the guy who'd just tried to kill him.

Honestly, it's a bit of both, the way I see it. Yeah I think it's horrible that he said it. It WAS heartless of him to say it, and I"ll be the first to admit that obviously there are many things that my favorite characters do that I flat out despise. But as you pointed out, he there is an element there of being "a shit to the guy who'd just tried to kill him." Because remember, it's not just that Wood attacked him that was unacceptable to Spike. It's the fact that first he wanted to turn him back into the very think he'd worked so hard to no longer be. That, in fact, was like trying to kill him TWICE.

Again, while I despise the way this scene played out and the way in which Spike acted, I certainly understand why his words contained extra venom at the time, given the above. And while I think it's heartless to defend oneself to the person who's lost his mother, Spike was making the point that he killed the person who would have killed him, and his kind. You know,"Tybalt would kill thee but thou slewest Tybalt, there art thou happy." It's all a miserable mess and of course Spike isn't content or proud about what he did, now that he's ensouled. But in this case, he was defending himself.

For the record, in case anyone thinks I don't mind any of this--I can't watch the scene between Spike and Wood, at all. I find Spike to be despicable in it, though I do understand where the venom comes from, as I mentioned above.

But no, its all, 'He's honouring her.' 🙄

Wait what? Did you think I meant that he was honoring Nikki Wood by wearing the coat? Just checking, cause that's not the case. He isn't honoring anyone, he is--again, just my take-- symbolically indicating that he is ready to fight with Buffy, the new slayer.

It wasn't remorse, not remotely, vampires don't feel remorse, even for loved ones they've brutally murdered, because they're soulless and evil and by definition have no conscience, they're not capable.

Er I think we may have our wires crossed here but I'm referring to the Spike of season 7 feeling remorse--you know, the one with a soul? Yes he absolutely can, and yes there is quite a lot of precedence for that (Angel, remember?) And as I said, that is in fact how the trigger works. The trigger is soul-having Spike's guilt and remorse, in song form.

I could not have said any of this better!
For the record, and to get back to the point of the thread. Did Spike deserve to die at Wood's hands? No, he wasn't resposible for killing Wood's mother. He's an asshole and doesn't endear himself to me with the way he behaves, but I would've been happy with somebody just kicking his ass, not a death sentence.
Wood cared only about a persona vendetta, therefore his actions are wrong. His judgement is clouded.

Giles is thinking clearer, imo, and I've explained my reasoning in the past as to why this is- the way he went about it was sneaky and underhand, but in all honesty he tried reasoning with Buffy, lives were at stake, he'd tried a cure and it appeared to have failed. Therefore what he came up with was the safest plan, garanteed with the best chance of success- based on what he knew at the time Giles made the only call he could've, the right call.

And, yeah, I guess Giles could've snuck down to the basement and staked Spike, but Spike might've woken up and fought Giles off. Then, well, trigger, house full of girls- still not a good plan.

Btw, @white avenger its a shame doing evil things in places means that you're not allowed to live there anymore- for example after 'Normal Again' Buffy would've had to move out of her own house after trying to feed all her friends to a demon in the basement.
Also, Tara couldn't have come round the Magic Box after 'Family' because of that time where she almost got people killed by those demons.
Also, Xander would'vew had to move out of his place, cause that's where he summoned Sweet who went on to kill people. 😉

And yes, that was sarcasm. The whole 'banned from a place cause you were responsible for bad things that happened there' is easily the stupidest arguemnt I've heard from a Spike fan...this month. 😛
