We're Growing!

You know the way I see it is that as long as it doesnt effect me during my lifetime I couldn't care less about population growth. Though those predictions for 2025 do sound alarming.

I don't really get this, as someone who's pretty interested in what's going on in the world, how people don't care about stuff unless it affects them directly. It's fine though, I guess that if you get involved and interested in everything it becomes so that you start worrying about everything and getting angry about all sorts.

Huh..that's pretty bad. I tend to worry about unimportant things. Worldly matters aren't necessarily on my daily agenda, so honestly I don't pay too much attention to them. People will figure it out. I hear they're pretty intelligent...

Funny, I hear the opposite.
The Carrying Capacity of the Earth has been estimated to be between 7 billion people and even all the way up to 12 billion. So, potentially, we could be reaching a point where it is impossible for the Earth to sustain any more growth. Obviously this is very complicated because it's not as if all resources are equally dispersed throughout the entire human population, but it's based on the average spent resources per person, so it's not that far off.

The future holds disease, violence and warfare to control the poplulation unless something else happens first to wipe us all out (like an asteroid or something.) Those will be sad and terrible days indeed for the timeline of our species, and the fact that they may not be too far ahead is very terrifying.

Are you saying that...Soylent Green... is people?
To be honest the growth itself doesn't scare me that much even if it goes way too fast for my taste. The big problem to me seem to be our selfishness.

Would I want to give up things in my life? Nope. Why would I? It's comfortable. But the way we're living is what cause the problem of draining resources and destroying the world as a whole. Or am I fooled about that? A big part of the worlds population doesn't have the luxeries we have. If "we" gave up some, or more, of our lifestile (as a group not a single person here and there) in some decades I think the change could be pretty amazing. Will it happen? I highly doubt it unless we're forced to.

Wars, disasters and diseases in the past, be it hundreds of years ago or more recently, all suck of course but at the same time they've helped slowing down the growth of the population.

Unless we find a way to live in space the question is how long before we destroy ourselves (if we go to war over oil why would it be different for other resources?) or the world decide to give us a "helping" hand again.
