At the end of season 4, the episode before the finale, when they are in the initiative. We all know how it went, Buffy kicked Adam's ass. At the end of the episode, the Government people say.


Man: (o.s.) The Initiative itself will be filled in with concrete.
Burn it down, gentlemen. Burn it down, and salt the Earth.

But in season 7 they go back to the initiative and it's not burned and filled up. Did they not follow orders?
 
It was a big cave for the most part, underground, it was built under the college, i'm pretty sure they trashed it, or hmm perhaps i'm missing something
 
Actually, It was just bad thinking on part of the writers (very unusual), because they then ended up needing to use the Initiative again in season seven... Drew Goddard even addressed this once:

"Maybe the writers should spend a little less time playing golf and a little more time figuring out how you can fill something with concrete and burn it down and salt the Earth and then go back there later..." -Drew Goddard (Buffy Writer) from Buffy Magazine #49


As for the thing about golf, has anyone else heard about how they have little greens and holes all over the Buffy offices?...lol

It was just an saying. They didn't mean that. Just... forget about the project, never bring it up, let it be.
 
You can't burn down something that's underground, it's an expression.

Probably the main entrances were filled with concrete...
 
I think people would complain if they burnt down the Initiative, since it was right under UC Sunnydale. Things would start caving in. It would be bad. It was a mistake on the writers' part, though.
 
ana8 and magui, please do not say that its not nice, cause how would you like if someone told you made many mistakes in your job? its not nice!
 
Burn the land

Burn it down and salt the earth is an expression (used in farming i think) for destroying the land and making sure that nothing can ever grow back.

The man from the Initiative was probably speaking metaphorically - make sure the Initiative can never come back.
 
Either the guy was speaking metaphorically, or they made a mistake. It's lasted for so long, it's impossible for the writers to remember every line people have said over all seasons...they're only human the buffy writers aswell!
