Wesley vs. Cyrus Vail

As we all know, in the last couple seasons of Angel Wes uses alot of guns. Its great when he pulls them out of nowhere and uses them. It has happened many times (vs. The Beast, hunting Angelus, vs. Skip, shooting his cyborg father). My question is why the hell didn't he just take a gun with him and shoot Vail dead in "Not Fade Away". It would have been way more effective than the magic he used and the knife he tried to use.

Any thoughts???
 
Probably a mere bullet would not be enough to kill Cyvus Vail. Then again, I didn't think a mere punch would either 😉
 
I would think that Vail would've used magic to make the gun ineffective. I think Wesley had the right idea, going in and trying to use magic against Vail. I just don't think that Wes should've been the one to do the magic. He was not powerful enough against Vail's power.
 
As much as I love Not Fade Away, this fight was the low point for me. He shouldn't have just taken guns, what about those cool arm-blades seen in Spin the Bottle?

If he'd taken a bit more time to prepare then the fight could have turned out differently. Wes was no great wizard, he should have know that he couldn't win by magic alone.
 
Perhaps he went in unarmed and unprepared on purpose. I have a feeling this was going to happen regardless of the cancellation and there would have been more to it in season 6.
 
Maybe Roonblah is right, he may have done it on purpose. He didn't have much left to live for, so maybe this was kind of a suicide-mission... literally.

Still, I think a bazooka would've been nice.

yeah but I don't think he would have died if the series wasn't cancelled. I think I remember reading an interview with Alexis Denisof (however you spell it) that after it was cancelled Joss told him that they were gonna kill Wes in the finale. If season 6 would have happened they would have needed Wes to continue to help guide Illyria.
 
I believe Wes was only allowed in under the pretenses that Vail wanted to meet with him. I'm sure Vail's guards would've frisked him for guns. The thing about using magic was that it'd be non-detectable until he was ready to strike. The problem was placing Wes against Vail in the first place. He and Illariya should've exchanged marks. She could've easily fought her way through Vail's defenses and Wes would've been in his element with the guys in the car. He could've planted a car bomb or hell, just shot 'em.

that's actually a good idea, watcherwes. had illyria gone in, as you said, she could have fought her way through it. she was, after all, the one who ended up killing vail in the end. she could even have gone in as fred and been suspected to have less power. but what if he had figured she was illyria and was an old one? maybe he would've have used a stronger defense or magic. hamilton was able to beat her up, so maybe he could've found a way as well. maybe it depends what exactly he's capable of.
 
Pathetic!

Wesley has taken out tougher guys than that and come back from wounds worse than what he had! I think that was pathetic...pathetic,yet unexpected (which is most likly why Joss did it)

What wound was worse than that? Sure maybe the gunshot, but that is debatable. I personally think that a sword that big to the stomach is the worst he ever had and fatal for sure.
