Western Australia does it again

The official temperature recorded in Onslow, north-western Australia got to 50.7 C yesterday (Thursday 13/1/22).

Jan 1, 20202, Texas had a 101 degree temperature feel differential between parts of the state. Brownsville (about as south as you can get); 95 degrees. Amarillo (the northernmost decent sized city): -6 degrees.

I have had dealings with companies in Texas since 1980 and what one project manager said to me rang true:

"There's nothing between Texas and the North Pole but a barb wire fence."

I liked Fort Worth's version of winter: temperatures a few degrees above freezing going to pleasant afternoons at about 65°F/18°C. I have been to Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Round Rock and Houston and enjoyed it more than I expected to. There is no denying the sun burns down in summer - we were working on cockpit displays for Trimble Navigation and we thought we had decent contrast in Toronto with the maximum ambient light we ever measured there at 9500 foot-candles. In Austin, even an average sunny day was 14,000 foot-candles. You had to really concentrate on the display to see anything.

Here we go in Western Australia, today (Friday 21/1/22) it will be 4 consecutive days over 40 degrees C. Tomorrow might be the same so the record books will need to be reset.

Last night was a bit of a sod, I had to keep both my air conditioners going continuously to keep the temp down to 34 degrees C in the front room. It was to hot to go to bed, for some reason I didn't get much sleep.
