Westworld - would you visit?

There's a new TV show (based on a Michael Crichton book/movie) called Westworld. The basic premise is it's a technologically advanced, Western-themed amusement park populated completely by synthetic androids dubbed "hosts". Westworld caters to high-paying visitors dubbed "newcomers" (also known as "guests"), who can do whatever they wish within the park, without fear of retaliation from the hosts.

In Westworld, you cannot be harmed by the hosts and can indulge any fantasy you may have about your wild west life - ride horses into the sunset, start a bar brawl or party into the night with the local ladies/gents. It reminded me very much of playing Red Dead Redemption. A totally immersive video game world where you can do anything, and be anyone.

(Naturally, in the movie/novel/TV show, things won't go to plan and something bad will happen! 😉)

If this theme park existed in real life, would you want to visit it?

I've been watching the show and liking it a lot. But no, I don't think I would want to visit. I don't think there's anything there I would really want to do. I like westerns, but I've never wanted to be in one... and frankly the violence and sex is so over the top it doesn't really resemble any real western I've ever seen.
 
I've not watched it yet (I do plan to). I've heard it's good, and has even been compared to Dollhouse. I love the film, but even if it did exist IRL, I can't imagine being interested in doing anything other than drinking in the bar, which I can do anywhere. And probably for cheaper. (Unless I held the bar hostage and drank them dry I suppose?).
 
Nope. I'd rather watch other people playing it on youtube.
 
Yes I probably would be interested, if only for the experience. I haven't seen the show yet, but I like the film, which had a medieval world and an ancient Greek world, both of which I'd like to visit. I hate rollercoasters and theme park rides, so this might be much more my sort of thing.
 
For Free, yes. Or if I had enough money not to be bothered by the price. As long as I can leave when I want to. Not interested in killing or having sex while being in Westworld. Coming home being thankful that I don't have to live that life all the time.

I thought of Dollhouse right away. The concept are the same. Dolls that exist to satisfy your every desire only to be wiped clean and supposed to never remember anything about it but suddenly they seem to do. Obviously we also meet the people behind it all, making everything work.

So far we've only seen the Western world but that sounds great and the desire to visit would be much bigger.
 
I'm really liking the show, so far. Not sure if I'd visit, but could be fun. 😉 I do ♥ Evan Rachel Wood.
 
I watched the film 5 times over the space of 7 months, on the 6th time I found it to be so boring, tedious, over-acted that I threw it in the bin. So a TV show based on that, yuk! Or the concept of a theme park .. .. some folk just shouldn't speak.

But I think that that's the whole point. It isn't historically accurate, any more than any movie/TV western from "The Great Train Robbery" to "Open Range." They present a movie set environment that the public can see and live in. Since most of that public is adult, it caters to the baser desires of their customers.

The real "Old West" would be nasty, smelly, and so downright boring that no one would want to pay to go there.

Most people today don't think of Sodom & Gomorrah when they think of a classic "wild west" setting, though. The violence is so extreme that if I were a visitor, it would take me right out of the story... I wouldn't believe that such a society could survive for long. The real Old West may have been pretty violent, but I'm pretty sure there wasn't a lot of bandits riding into town and slaughtering the townsfolk by the dozen for no apparent reason. Not even in the movies.

Then again, this show is set in the future. If society by that time has become decadent enough that there's a critical mass of customers able and willing to pay $40,000 a day for this experience, maybe this is the kind of violence you'd expect from a kiddie show or a sitcom in that setting.
 
Someone had a theory that the man in black is William. He grew to a middle aged man and time travelled back.
 
I wouldn't visit a wild west park, I have no interest in that theme. But I would visit it if it were a medieval theme.
 
I'm obviously talking about the non-murdery, non-violent, non-awful version of Westworld, not the Westworld from the show. Basically, the non-Michael Crichton version of a futuristic theme park (because when he gets involved, things start to go south.... 😛)
 
😎This thread just made me think of the film Future World...kind of a Westworld sequel. Terrible plot, but that ending!!! LMFAO.
 
Someone should do "Wild, Wild West" meets "Blazing Saddles" as a futuristic (in a steampunk way) comedy land. I don't see any other attraction to the old, hardscrabble life of subsistence farming, even if I am allowed to do anything I want. Personally, I prefer the world of modern technology and flush toilets.

There are those who have idealized perceptions of life in the Old West, which I've never understood. Bathing was infrequent, and most people stank to high heaven.
