There are those who have idealized perceptions of life in the Old West, which I've never understood. Bathing was infrequent, and most people stank to high heaven.
Even among the most civilized, the Saturday night bath was part of the ritual so the parishioners didn't stink out the church. Among cowboys, bathing was less frequent. Among prospectors, it may have been an annual thing. This was part of the reason brides carried a bouquet down the aisle - so the stench would be covered by a floral stench.
