As the title states. What has always had gender equality in your eyes?

Equestrian has always been quite equal in my life time - men and women compete against each other on equal footing. Neither gets ahead because of gender, its based on skill. Some get ahead because of money, but the rider still needs some talant. Classes arnt split between men and women except for the prissy show horse gentlemens/ ladys/childs mount.

Music is another. What you produce speaks louder than sex.

Dance is enjoyed by both sexes, although female dominated, men are offered the same chances for professional careers (possibly less competition for male roles, but they will cast a female if the dude is not up to scratch)

The internet worldview gets more and more confusing to me, the further i have moved from it, but my life feels more relaxed when I word as i mean instead of sugar coating it. Hopefully no one takes offense.

Can anyone give me example from your life where gender is a non issue? Where it hasnt factored into successful outcome?

Ta for discussion

I can give you an example of where gender became an unexpected issue. I read a book written by a woman who ran a successful but niche business. Her company did recovering of aircraft that had fabric over wood or steel tube wings and fuselages. If you had a Piper Cub or a Bellanca Citabria or a Stearman or a Tiger Moth, when the fabric got a bit ratty, you took it to her place for a restoration. The process involved removing the existing fabric, replacing it with new fabric and refinishing the paint. Sometimes there would be more wing work and sometimes more fuselage work but she found one thing:

You put the women on the wings and the men on the fuselage.

There were times when there was excess wing work and other times with excess fuselage work and she was tempted to throw her whole workforce at it but the results were a disaster and the proof kept being repeated:

You put the women on the wings - never the men. You put the men on the fuselage - never the women.

I think a lot of things have, as you mentioned, but it all depends on the "level" of equality if that makes sense. If you think of it in the way of say football, mens football is hugely popular world wide, womens football isn't, BUT, it is on the rise. The Brazilian women's team is probably (may not be as well) but one of the more known world wide.

I think if you were to look at most of the Olympic sports I would say that the women who take part in the same activities as the men etc have it all the same, and you have the pioneering one's who are making it more well known for the lesser known events etc.

As far as my own personal experience, I can't really single out anything, if anything most of my career the "on the ground" workforce has been male dominated, but hierarchy has always been female dominated.

I remember at my last work place as a Drainage Engineer, there was a massive argument one day over "equality" as such, it's a very male dominated area when it comes to the work force doing the outside and dirty jobs etc, and my work place when advertised would never receive any applications from women wanting to do the role, and even my manager at the time (female) said something like - "I'm all for feminism, but I understand and completely accept that men do some jobs better than women, and vice versa" , the head manager (woman) took a great deal of offense to this, stating that anything we (men, outside workforce) could do, so could any woman, so she literally advertised the role to females only, nobody applied for the first 2 month until one did, she had to due to Job Centre making her apply, obviously she got the job, no questions asked, and she broke down on the job about 3 days in, couldn't handle the smells etc, just as a lot of men couldn't who have tried.

But I tended to agree with my manager at the time, there are jobs that just aren't the opposite sex in general, that's in no way saying that either one of them can't do it, not at all, just that a lot of jobs seem to be orientated towards one or the other.

That'll come down to your definition of equality. I play table tennis in a local league and it's equality in action to me. Everyone is welcome, you play at your level and that's it. Ages from 8 to 80 plus, men, women, anyone else all playing against each other.

Another take on equality is professional football. Men and women can both play but they're separated and take home the money they're respective events generate.

The other take on it is professional tennis where equality is based on separation, the same as football, but the sexes have to be paid the same amount of money regardless of quality, quantity or the interest generated.

Birthdays!

Us blokes sometimes let you girls have a birthday.. .. ..
and before you girls say naughty things about us guys, you might like to consider
us guys keeping you girls young!!

Youtubers. They seem to be popular regardless of gender, although girls tend to lean towards the "girly" topics like makeup and boys towards gaming. But generally, although I think it's a hard thing to get into. You'll either make it or you won't but gender won't be the reason why.

Good one! That never crossed my mind.
Writers; lots of popular well-paid male and female writers. Seems balanced it terms of quality, quantity, publishing contracts, etc. It's not really based on gender but on merit.

Yes! Nice pick, cant tell a male vs female in most written work
What determines equality though? Like where is the line drawn? I mean it's an obvious statement for men & women to be able to compete at the same level, to have equal rights in general, but will that ever be the case? I mean when you consider things such as some people both men and women, never get an equal education etc, does there need to be more done?

Equality is a stupid word. Its thrown around HEAPs in my country right now to describe fickle social ideals. My point for the thread was to have a list of work/life that doesnt merit you on gender, nor does gender disadvantage you. Some great suggestions here 🙂 its nice to see so much that IS equal in a world that keeps whinging that its not. I feel we've gone backwards a bit in this equality stuff... Some things were more equal in the 80's than they are now. There is a pay dispute over female dominated child care in oz now - they say they are paid less because they are women. I say they are paid less because its a bloody easy job. Men wouldnt be paid more nor advanced in that career any more than women, its the work they have chosen (and pays above min wage and more than aged care...) I dont get how chosing that career and being sad over middle income is related to gender equality in the workplace. I seem to crash into teens on the net who think female lead actors are groundbreaking, its been happening for almost as long as tv has been in this country!

Men and women can work together well, and its great to have roles suited to sex and physical ability too. I love the teamwork stories. Some roles are simply better suited to one gender, and I think its great to keep those roles aswell, team effort.

Cirus is based on skill.

Does anyone do Sailing? I think men and women compete together in that, could be wrong.

Nursing, Vet, Rangers, Coaching, gardening. Small business? I wonder what the split is on self employed.

Not sure on the self employed, I think that will very much come down to what you do as for a large amount you choose what you charge for your services and your reputation etc can go on to help this. For example many hair dressing or beauty salons etc, most do well based on reputation rather than price as people are happy to pay more for the good service.

I agree about the female lead actors as well, there have been amazing and lead female actors for such a long time, but it's only now that gender equality has become such a big issue have people started making charts online saying that recently women have been taking over as lead roles etc, but it's been happening long before people started to take notice.

I think that a lot often gets lost in translation with the equality 'debate'. You read a lot of what's said and you get the very high campaigning person who will tarnish everyone with the same brush, but then say there is no equality..., if they portrait everyone to be the same.., they can't complain.
