What are some of the best (and worst) jobs you've ever had?

Some jobs are a wondrous, unbelievable dream. And others are a vortex of soul-crushing despair. Whether they are part time or full time, jobs play an important role in most of our lives.

Anyway, I want you to think about the jobs you've had in your life. Then tell us which ones were AMAZING and which ones were a NIGHTMARE. Tell us why, if you wish. Details are always interesting. 😊

So, I'll go first:

Best jobs:



Winchell's Donuts - It was a small shop and the customers were super friendly. Plus, I got to eat donuts! (There is NOTHING like a warm, freshly made glazed donut!) My boss was great, and I met SO many cute guys.


The Rand Corporation - I was a receptionist in the front office, and the salary/medical benefits were SPECTACULAR. My main job was to examine the identification of ANYONE who came through those hallowed doors. This included Rand employees, high-ranking military people, and politicians. My boss had told me, "It doesn't matter who they are. You always check their ID, even if you recognise them. Don't be intimidated."


Worst jobs:

 Au pair girl - Actually, It's not supposed to be considered a "job." I was told that the host family would treat me like a "daughter." Guess what? That didn't happen. The first week went fine...but then they refused to give me the weekly day off and salary that was agreed upon beforehand. The last straw was catching the wife reading my PRIVATE journal (which was hidden in my suitcase). She actually had the NERVE to scold me for writing negative remarks about what I wrote.

McDonald's - Worst pay EVER. We were treated like slaves by customers and managers alike. Oh, and children as well!! The boss would say, "Time to lean is time to clean!" at least six times a day.

The worst:
I was the storekeeper for a firm that made nuts and bolts. Weighing the dear little darlings was not considered accurate enough, bloody things.

The Best:
I was the Storekeeper for a firm that kept soil samples for Gold prospecting companies.

 

[Stake fodder]

Worst job: I worked as a temp at the university, and many of the jobs were interesting. But not the one where I had to clean used telephones, with a toothbrush, in a cold storeroom with no windows. I lasted about a week on that one, and even the manager didn't blame me for leaving!

Best job: travel counselor at AAA, at least the parts of it where we were taken on industry junkets that put us up in nice hotels, dined at some of the nicest restaurants, and went on different tourist experiences, and were paid for it!

Worst job - managing 100+ acre retirement home for horses. I loved the horses and living there, but the boss was awful. Expected me to work 7 hours a day 7 days a week for no pay, with the threat of kicking me out if I didnt do it. Kept changing things, the quad bike and horse feed was supposed to be included and she took it. Said weed control was not my responsibility as the back paddocks needed doing with a tractor, but then I got charged by the guy on the tractor. Told me to fix fencing and the whole place was a mess of it, I blew out 4 discs in my back, I was not allowed any time off to recover, or I'd lose my home. She wanted me to pay for all the water bills for all of the horses and water trough repairs, again for no pay (she was getting all the agistment money from the horses owners and none was being put back into upkeep). And I paid rent in advance for a year as it was so hard to find rental homes at the time. But when her other business went bust, I got booted out anyway so she could have the house, she refused to refund my rent paid in advance. I just wanted to die after that one, still do to be honest. Broke me completely. In all ways.

Best job - taking tourists on trail rides. It was always a laugh when they said they knew how to ride cos they saw the Man from Snowy River once. And then they'd just about fall off at a trot hehe. It was hard physical work riding all day, but good fun meeting people from all over the world and watching their glee when they learned how to canter on their first day. Too many insurance issues to offer fun like that anymore. It was a great way to connect people to the beauty and willingness of horses to carry clueless people on adventures in the bush.

The best job I ever had was the one I just left, working as an in-home appliance technician for a local appliance store. I was treated like family from the day I was hired. I was very sad to have to leave there, especially so suddenly because of my back issues.

The worst Job was the one I left to go to work for the above employer, an in-home service tech for Sears. I worked there 20 years (and retired) and the first 15 were okay, but the last 5 were horrible. Nothing we did was good enough for them. They were more interested in us selling more maintenance agreements than they were in us fixing anything. Of course the company was struggling and hurting for cashflow and an MA sale was like Merry Christmas money to them and they were on us hard about it. We could no longer get or buy any needed supplies without and decree from Congress which made doing our jobs next to impossible.
Was never so happy to leave that place, which turned out to be the right decision cause they closed the local retail store shortly after that.
