Question What are some of the scariest horror films you've ever seen and why did they scare you?

Amusement (2008) When I was younger I found this film absolutely terrifying, especially this scene.

That’s the thing though. In the Blair Witch Project, the Burkittsville woods are an extension of the Witch herself. The characters make mention of the fact that they’ve been walking in the same direction but are always going back to where they were.

She manipulates the space around them so that they can’t get out. The river trick would’ve been similarly fruitless.

Yes, good point. It also simulates that feeling of legit being lost in the woods. I remember getting lost in the woods behind my parents' house when I was little (middle school?). Just for an hour or so. And the feeling of going around in circles.. it's scary.

Another thing that makes the river just plain unnerving is the fact that there is an old sighting of the Witch where a little girl was grabbed by a hand emerging from the river and was dragged into it. She literally just vanished from reality and they never found her, so avoiding water should be the utmost priority 😵‍💫.

Oh I don't remember that myth. Was it in the beginning interviews? I need to go back and really listen to those. I'm sure they better set up the story. Lol.

Yeah, Blair Witch added so much mythology to the story. I would love for them to expand and explore it. The premise is great but I feel like the movie is a let down when you compare it to the mythos of it.

What made the film so great was that it was seeming found footage. The marketing team did such a great job of convincing people that Heather, Michael, and Josh were legit missing for years, and that the film was cut from the actual footage of their last few days. Watching it now, knowing it's not real, I can see the let down. But when you consider that on original viewing 98% of the audience thought that this experience was actual, and that the three filmmakers were still missing. It's like faux true crime in real time. Absolutely genius.

Possibly, but I’m fairly certain it’s in the documentary they released shortly before/after the film. It’s a “documentary” that covers the backstory of the witch and the town, including things like Rustin Parr. 44 mins and I’m sure it’s floating around somewhere. Curse of the Blair Witch is the title

Ohhhh I think that may be a special feature on my bluray. I will go look when I get home. lol.

I actually managed to get my hands on an accompanying Blair Witch book- which built a lot on the Mythos and history- and it was pretty darn creepy. Still got it around somewhere. I think I put it away after Book Of Shadows because well...you'd understand if you saw that film.

Here's an, um, sweet story of a little girl making peace with evil clowns. (Am I evil for describing it that way? Or for thinking maybe the clown had a point when she'd ask her mother in disgust "I do NOT like it! Why would you bring THAT home?" How rude.)

This has one of the few jump scares I like.

But that ending...I think Xander would've fainted just watching that, at least before the ep Nightmares. (Hmm, actually, this COULD be interwoven into Nightmares as just one of the many nightmares going on beyond those we're focused on.)
