Got the alternator out of the car, so now I have to get it rebuilt. Mazda no longer stocks the part but it is a standard Hitachi item, so bearings and brushes should be available. Then I have to put it back in.

Good enough weather to finish off a brake job on the Subaru. Then I have to reinstall the alternator on the Miata. Life in the fast lane.
