Ugh, finished the first episode and I’m really not impressed. Probably not gonna keep going.
Some of the contestants are really shallow and judgmental about other dishes. It’s just ugly to watch and it’s so fake when they want to act all happy when people win. Like Tirzah said Dorian needed to go home, but when Dorian got the biggest thumbs up from the judges, Tirzah wants to be like “oh man I knew you were amazing!” TIRZAH, make up your mind! 🙌 Two-faced jerkwad.
The bigger problem though is the fact that they literally sent a guy home for being “too traditional” with his soul food. Like…isn’t the point of soul food that it is comforting and nostalgic? Why are we sending people home because it isn’t something you’d get at a 5 star Italian joint. Feels like there is a major identity crisis with the show not knowing what it wants to even be about. Soul food is all over this thing but they got these renowned next gen chefs and are actually putting people in the bottom for not being on the bleeding edge of the soul food frontier. 💀 If ever there was a competition for random home cooks to participate in, it should’ve been this one. I can totally see them telling people to go home because they didn’t do some asinine thing like use liquid nitrogen on their collard greens lmao
Reminds me of why I loved the barbecue show on Netflix. Great BBQ Showdown or something. Do something new, do something traditional, but the point was just doing something excellent. The last two contestants were this really traditional southern woman and this young black guy who added an awesome Jamaican spin to his BBQ. I felt like you saw people be able to experiment with their own style and it made for an engaging competition.
Here, the winning dishes look like instagram fodder instead of actual soul food. If you aren’t like everyone else, you’re outta here! What a disappointment.
