I'm going to watch The Shining in the very near future. (The first one in case there have been any "remakes.") I read the book as a teen and saw enough clips, documentaries on the King-verse (written and video), and parodies that I'm actually not certain if I've seen it before or not. That's a weird feeling. But it does mean even if I have seen it, I can give it a rewatch.

It's certainly been on my list. A movie with that kind of staying power and influenced so much (back when artists could be artists rather than conform to focus groups) is worth watching for that reason alone.

This really got me psyched to see it when I have a couple of hours and in the mood to just watch:


Some good stuff about the inspiration of both King and Kubrick (and others). It links it to faerie tales and how this is a twist to it (but not the only way to perceive it as), and made me think of some horror series I liked, and even my own childhood...the story is a good metaphor for a lot, which could, depending on our background and life experience, see it more through Danny's or even Wendy's perspective. Also an interesting bit on how Wendy (wife/mother) is "stronger than we thought" though she, as strong characters typically had back then, a flaw, which was denial and explaining away abusive behavior toward herself and her son, though she wasn't Debbie from Buffy. (Nor would I say it's in support of Spuffy.) And the "shining" being a kid who sees a lot more than their parents think, or is even allowed to admit to.

Both as a story in the King-verse and as a parable-faerie tale, it works.
 
Blackfish. Been keeping an eye out for this for a while. Only just started it. Sounds like they picked trainers similar to how they pick police horseriders - they do NOT want people with animal experience to become trainers because people with prior training experience are harder to make compliant to their own ideas.

Kitchen Nightmares. Ok, my kitchen is absolutely spotless hospital grade clean in comparison to these restaurants.

I finally saw The Shining. I'm sure I haven't seen it in its entirety before. Jack Nicholson is amazing as always. (And there's a charm and greater immersion when people look like real people rather than models who go to the spa everyday.)

But it evoked memories of the book that I KNOW are different (though some were vague enough in memory that I had to confirm it). I'd say the book is definitely better, but that should be a given. For a King movie, it's not bad (compared to most other movies adapted to his novels), but it makes me want to read the book again. (If I could, I'd want to ask about a few changes. I wonder if one or two scenes were about "subvert expectations" in which case it's an example of how even in the hands of a skilled artist that doesn't always make it better.)

There's one scene from the book where the hedge maze (topiary?) comes alive when Danny is alone in it (can't remember what happens when he runs back in later), and I remember that scene riveted me as a teen. That wasn't in the movie (just one scene of Jack staring at a model of the hedge maze and seeing tiny versions of his wife and son in it while he seemed to be in a trance).

What can I say about 8 episodes where very little happens, and what does happen is often just very dumb; plot pushed by dumb protagonists with plot armour or idiotic villains all make nonsensical decisions.
There's actually a scene where somebody gets impaled with a lightsabre..and the next episode she's literally 'Oh, I'm fine!'
There is so much wrong with this show but what puts it about show others was that at least it didn't destroy characters I care about. There's nothing here to care about; some characters are bland and vaguely smug (like Ahsoka), some are awful (like Sabine) and some are mere wastes of time (like the Hera and Baylon).
This is supposed to be 'top tier' Star Wars? This was pathetically written empty spectacle, representing everything wrong with current Star Wars and many in the fandom.

The movie is vastly different. It’s why King hates it. Particularly Jack being a caring father in the book rather than a lunatic who is implied to have…well, you know, Danny.

The hedge maze in the movie is a replacement for the topiary animals in the book. Iirc there’s two lions, a rabbit, and something else. It’s been like 2 years since I’ve read it. That scene with Danny is fantastic, as is an earlier one with a fire hose and one later with a cement pipe.

They actually made a miniseries version of the book that is much more faithful, though the quality is…well it certainly isn’t perfect! I’d say give it a chance if you’re interested and have low expectations.

I kept feeling there's something "off" about all the characters, but then that's common for King movies. Jack is an awesome actor, but it just didn't feel right somehow with the book, but it's too long ago for me to remember.
