For me it sort of lost its magic after the first dozen issues. Things getting really complicated and fantastical, and the characters harder to relate to, harder to understand why they do what they do.
My favorites are mostly Joss ones.
The Long Way Home is a great arc, really set things in motion like a season opener should. The characters felt real, and we got to know some new ones like Renee -the potential love interest for Xander. A bit of mystery when the gang discover those Twilight markings, and the first glimpse of mystery floaty man Twilight himself. Giant Dawn is kinda cool, I like the two page spread with Buffy moving to various positions across both pages talking to Dawn who occupies both at once; the art direction was really good. Got me excited about Buffy season 8 for sure!
After that, I liked the funny issue 10, and the fateful encounter with Twilight in issue 11. The ones that came before ish 10 and after Long Way Home were pretty good too but I did miss the core Scoobie gang during that period, absent for months due to slow pace of comics compared to television.
Issue 20 was the first one I had really enjoyed for a long time when that came out. It is the one with a cuter cartoon art style like the Buffy animated series that never happened, and even goes back to earlier, simpler high-school times. Was a nice one-shot change of pace from what the series has become with its Mech-Dawn in Tokyo, submarines, teleporting around the world and old characters who return just because.
