"What Buffy Has Meant To Me" Essay Contest Entries

Buffy has been there for me when times have been tough. So tough that I really just wanted to give up and say to hell with things. I first started watching buffy three years ago. I was 26 years old just got laid off from work and couldn't find a job. I couldn't pay my bills and desperately didn't want to move home, broke, in debt, etc. I found Buffy flipping through channels one day and came across the show on FX. I was hooked from that day on. For some reason watching Buffy I could forget about all my troubles for the day and lose myself in whatever battle Buffy was in. I found over time that in a way I could indentify myself with Buffy in a personal way we were a lot a like. I was a loner in high school. I had one friend and except attending classes I was all mysterious to my classmates. I didn't have a social life infact I can honestly say I never been on what you can call a date. Sure I've been in relationships but never dated just jumped right in. Most of my choices of men were not the best. I even hid a few of my relationships from friends and family cause I knew they wouldn't approve. I lied to protect everyone I cared about from knowing the truth of what I was doing and who I was with. So much that when they did find out I wasn't trusted. Who could blame them. I hurt them so much that in my darkest hour when I was broke and depressed and miserable who was going to help me out I was alone everyone I loved wanted nothing to do with me. Buffy gave me the strength to fight and pull myself up out of the grave I was digging for myself. I watched Buffy battle the baddies win apocolaypes and decided that I my life was going to change I was going to have to fight my demons one demon at a time. The day I realized what I need to do. I pack up a few possessions in my Jeep, packed up there rest of my apartment and let it go and moved to Oklahoma. I got a job at a track in Sallisaw, Oklahoma stayed with friends who let me stay with them for free. Once I got rid of the apartment and the horses I had eliminated most of everything that was costing me money. I started dragging myself out of the dark. I went on to move from track to track, state to state, over the next three years living in tack rooms, dorm rooms, anywhere I could that didn't cost me a dime. The less I had to spend the more I could get myself out of debt. The more I have fought to be a better and stronger person the better things have become. Three years ago I would never believe that I would find myself where I am now. Yes I am still in debt but it is getting smaller, yes I have gained everyones trust back and those relationships are better than they ever have been, and last but not least who would have ever thought that I would end up with a wonerful boyfriend and a beautiful baby boy. If it wasn't for Buffy I don't know I would found someone to identify with so well to bring me out of the dark and into the light. Buffy DVDs go everwhere with me and when feel like I need a boost I just watch Buffy.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Show That Made My Life

When I was 6 years old, I watching tv like normal, and I came accross Buffy. "Oh, yay a horror show!" I thought. I watched it, I laughed and for the time, I was scared. I couldn't understand why, but I was hooked. Every week I tuned in on YTV, each episode was a ****ing adventure. It was so action packed, especially when you're a child.
As a child, I was very depressed, and as a result, I'd isolate myself and talk to myself. I normally confinded myself in to television shows, but Buffy was the ultimate. I had to face parental scrutiny, odd timings and the gurantee of a television set to watch it on. Whenever I had to put up with shit from my classmates, teachers and life. I always had Buffy to look forward to.
Buffy and all the characters were not only my "friends", I'm a product of each character. Buffy shaped my personality, and made me a person. Now that it's over, I relive in the reruns. Not only do I see my childhood, myself, but also my current life relating to everything on Buffy. In my most worst days, I put on Buffy, I forget the world and I'm lost in euphoric memory.

yeah cuz every 6 yr old has that reaction to vampire slayings...lol
Buffy is my escape from this scarey world we live in, i have always felt out of place and a bit of a loner. Whilst growing up everyone watch things like Friends, Alley Macbeal , Sex and the City etc and i could never reall get into them. Buffy was the first programme I ever really loved to watch. I think like alot of people will say on here Buffy helped me get and still does to get me through the crap.

One of the main reasons Buffy is so important is that I have suffered with depression quite badly, I have felt isolated and alone alot of my life, and I found that Buffy helped me understand alot the things I felt and I could really relate to her, OK I am not a Vampire Slayer, but the lonliness and feeling apart from everyone else I knew all about.

I dont really know anyone else in my life who likes Buffy like me, but now I found this place and know that you peeps are just as passionate about Buffy as me!

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The Path Of Imagination & Outside My World!

Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Four words that aren’t just a title but perhaps a guide to choices, a lesson learnt and a kick ass show in my life. Buffy not only entertained me and the eyes of thousands of other Buffy fans in this world; but it also taught me certain values and issues within our society. Even though the show has now finished it still continues on in the hearts of all those Buffy Fans who still need to escape and perhaps learn something like I did over the past ten years of my experience in front of the TV watching what I think of as one of the best shows to have aired. Because it was a television show that was aimed at a various amount of people, the audience could relate to the show with their own experiences both positive and negative just like I did.

I actually went through a bad period of my life from when I was eleven to fifteen that included death, my parent’s divorce, operations, break-ups you name it. I think everyone has gone through it and my solution wasn’t giving up or letting in but to get the remote, turn on the television and watch Buffy. It took my mind off things, I could say a lot of shows I love now can do that for me too but I think Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the only TV I really watched as a child besides cartoons but I loved the whole supernatural concept to the show and I loved that the show could take you places. And that is something that the real world couldn’t do. Buffy put me on a path of imagination and took me outside of my world and I thank Joss Whedon and the writers for getting me through childhood and adolescence!

I think the best thing about Buffy The Vampire Slayer was the fact that it was based on a woman character and not a man being the powerful sex in the show and I still do to this day consider Buffy as one of my all time TV heroes because of the strength and power she had not only for herself but those around her and I thought that was great. Another great thing about Buffy, if it wasn't for the show I would have never met some of the amazing people I am friends with today. So amongst the action, romance, vampires, death, magic and singing I didn’t let BTVS take me along with it, but perhaps I took it along with me.

What Buffy the Vampire Slayer, meant to me.

I, like most people grew up with buffy, I remember watching the show when it first premiered, i was psyched, i was pumped, and i was a lot of other p words that aren't perverted and mean estatic. From the very moment the first scene came on, I was hooked. And from there on, i followed the show, growing with the other characters. Laughing when those characters told jokes, and cried when those characters pain were too much for them to hold. Inside, I felt like I was a silent member of the scooby gang, their pain was my pain, their victories mine, their failures fell on my shoulders, and their battles were fought on in my mind. I took notes from the show on how to deal with certain issues in my life that i don't think i could have ever gotten past if it wasn't for the show.
True the show was over during the hardest part of my life, yet I own the entire series of buffy and angel. And the hardest part of my life was last year when my father passed away one week before valentines. I was distraught. Confused. I didn't want to go on living. And one day I started watching Buffy again. And all of the feelings that i had then, came rushing back. Then i got to a certain season with the episode "The Body." and it was the hardest episode to watch. The entire time, i fought myself, choking my own tears back down into my throat, telling myself "I won't cry. I can't cry. I WONT BREAKDOWN!." I failed. By the end I was crying. Balling infact. My hand was shaking uncontrollably, my breathing was cut in to short rasps between each painful sob. Yet after the tears washed away, I began to see the beauty in life again.
Yet what has buffy meant to me?
Everything.
It has been a crutch to help my heart walk when it was wounded.
It has been my joy, when the terrors of highschool seemed to much.
It was my strength, the lessons that were taught help me carry my burdens.
It was my rolemodel, it taught me what it meant to be a hero.
And it taught me what true love was. And from that I modeled my own aspects. Never love lightly. If you love, love with all your being. Love until the love hurts and it tears you apart to be away from that person. Never fall for someone who can't accept you for who you are, for what you are. Strengths and Flaws. Love someone with all your heart, when they can love you for your own flaws. Love and cherish life. Love your friends. And Cherish every moment that life has to offer you. Because every moment is precious.
In retrospect, Buffy, has made me who I am today.

i've been a buffy fans since i was 16 years old and now it's been 10 years past and i'm going 26..there is no point in my life i forget this buffy thing. the first time i've seen this show i feel i will like it sooo much because the action thing, a little drama, comedy, suspense, romance and etc., all fits into one. i kinda like the friendship buffy has, her potential to every fights she have and ofcourse the angel thing..:lmao: through buffy it helps me to discover who really i am! you know in sort way i can say i see my self that we have lot's in common except that i'm not a slayer. well ok i'm a cookie dough!! i always use to do things that i can't finish and when it comes to relationships i've never been in any one..i'm always good at first..at this and then but i just wake up one day i'm not really ready yet. because i have duties to do and responsibilities...well in sort way buffy is been an inspiration to everyone who are lost like me!! and through her i found courage and strenght to fight in against any devil and demon thing in this world. that winning is fighting and that for every battle we were gonna win..well let's celebrate for 10 years anniversary of buffy the vampire slayer.:coolman:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

What is there to say except, "Genius, pure genius." This television show has brought me the happiest years of my life. Whether it was self identification or just the feeling of empowerment. There has been many times where I've had to defend myself. Plus from watching it I have kind have developed a sense of really good reflexes. Let's just say falling from a porch can be not so scary if you flip around and land on your bare feet in a crouching position...yes that rilly happened...

It is something of wonder, excitement, and joy. Something I will never forget and hope to never grow distant from.

Buffy was my friend, my love, my tragedy, my anger, my frustration, my confusion, my happiness, and my escape. I felt my life really started when I began to watch Buffy, I was young and it taught me a lot. It was like a life lesson you couldn't get anywhere else. It picked me up when I was down, it threw me back a couple of feet when I got too cocky, and taught me how to live, love and be open to learning. I grew up with Buffy, and a lot of lessons I have learned, and that I have taught others came from Buffy. It was my encouragement, it showed me you can truly do anything as long as you put your mind to it, and not to be so afraid. It made feel like if I didn't get up and try to win the game, just because of a little fear, there was no way in heck I was ever going to win.

Some of life's little things came out of the show, things I should have been taught by the people around me, and things I wasn't taught. Buffy almost became like a mentor to me. The show was so well written and so well thought out, and way to real in it's emotional and mental sense, that it just wasn't a show anymore..it was a life. It was a life in where when things were bad they went all to hell, and when things were good, nothing could penetrate that. It showed me the meaning of family, and friends, and it also showed how ones priorities and values can get jumbled up when your taking a ride on this thing called life. Buffy is an epic show, and it will always mean the world to me, because in some small way, it was my world for so long. Buffy helped me get through some extremely terrifying times in my life, and it showed me how to come out of it like a survivor, and not a victim. I am a stronger person because of the lessons I took away from the show, and I believe everything happens for a reason, and If I had never ever seen Buffy, I would not be who I am today.

What can I say about Buffy? Buffy showed me that there are bigger problems in the world. No, not apocalypses, but regular problems. People using you, friend issues, isolation, and love, etc. I do have to say, though, that when I felt weak, Buffy made me feel like I could climb a mountain. She showed me that running away wouldn't solve the problems at hand. The most important thing, however, that Buffy made me realize, is that I'm different than most of my friends. When I started watching Season 4, I noticed that Willow & Tara were my favorite relationship on the show. As I watched their love progress, I realized that I was bi. Thanks to Joss Whedon, and Willow & Tara, my best friend and I are more than just friends, and I have never been happier. The joy I feel is tantamount to winning the lottery. It's unimaginable. Thanks to Buffy, I am a stronger, happier person. Thanks to the Buffyverse!!!

I doubt I can say anything that hasn't already been said. I was 13 going on 14 when Buffy first aired and watced it religiously from the get go and even now, almost being 24, I still have a growing appreication as I revisit moments with new eyes after new experiences that I've had that I may not have fully understood when I was younger.

I matured watching Buffy. Watching her battle demons and life. Watching her take on so much reponsibility while still being a teenager made me believe that maybe you can be responsible without being mature. It made me realise that people can hurt you but real strength is getting up after you've been knocked down. Buffy taught me that love isn't logical, that not everyone gets a "happily ever after" and helped me to move on when I needed to.

Buffy opened up this world to me. The adult world. Shaped me and my way of thinking. Turned me into a net junkie (no, seriously), for without the Buffyverse I would never have met some of the people who are more dear to me than almost anything in the world. I would not have the appreciation of how a common interest can bring people together.

I know I'm not the most out there fan. In fact, new people I meet are often surprised that I would be a fan of such a "dorky" show (it has been said). I'm not sure if those people will ever understand me but I watch my DVDs with either a smile on my face or a tear on my cheek and I know that what Buffy has taught me about life and living....nothing can ever take that away from me.

that was beautiful, doi. :)
Just around the time when youngest generation of USA could peer into TV screens getting to know Buffy, I in a Russian city X was watching "Charles in Charge" and my favorite male figure was Alf...so till this year I had no idea of the magical Universe created by Joss Whedon. When my boyfriend told me that he has the full collection of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I made a sound like "huh..eh..uh?" And said "NO" to the idea of watching that silly named childish whatever. But he kept insisting, making a full campaign to convince me to watch it. So I ended up so annoyed that I called BTVS a Waffle the Vanilla Syrup and Baby the Veiny Sucker and then I only decided to give it a try cos´ I knew that Alyson Hannigan was playing there. And I like Alyson a lot. So I took a shiny DVD out of the box and in no time it was swooped by DVD player. And since that very moment I was sucked in, driven to and absolutely devoured by the story. I saw the whole evolution of the series from the school themed funny yet scary action to more philosophical and controversial saga about epic fight of the light that we carry in our hearts against the essence of evil in a month and a half. "Buffy" was for me like a separate dimension. A full of excitement life, adventure waiting just around the corner and a feeling that no matter how dark it gets it will end up by "hugs and puppies". I wish I saw Buffy long ago, but since "wishing" is never good when applied to the past (and with no Vengeance Demon poking around), I hope that "Buffy" will serve me as an inspiration in further life and I will have little bit more Faith in women that can stand alone against the forces of darkness. Joss Whedon is an amazing man, who's mind can be contemplated like fire. I thank him for Buffy even after 10 years since she was created.

Buffy started probably when i was around six or seven years old. I didnt know about till i was about eleven. When i was just going through the channels. I stopped on one that had caught my eye. There was a girl fighting some guy with a messed up face. she pulled out a stake , and all of a sudden WOOOSH. He turned to dust. I kept watching, forgetting my channel surfing from before. As soon as the episode was done, i was blown away and hooked. I couldnt wait for the next one. luckily another back to back came on. From that moment on i had found the best tv show ever.
At first it was just a tv show and i just watched it and had fun. But as i watched more and got to know the characters and the story, i became aware that the show was more then that. It related to people, to me.
Now my life wasnt that bad while i was watching buffy, but it still was an escape for me, and it gave me some to look up to, a girl who can kick but. It gave me something to go into and forget about everything else.
I even learn about people while watching the series. Buffy has been the only show that has made me feel happy and made me laugh, and also feel sad, and cry. And its possible to say that i could have done all this in the same episode. This show open my eyes to so many new things i didnt know about or didnt understand.
I believe that after watching buffy, it helped make me a better person.
And for that and just because the show rocks, its something i can always go to when i need my buffy fix or need to clear my head.
Not to many people around me see the show as i do, but it doesnt matter to me because Buffy means a lot to me and i thank Joss and every one else that worked on it.

I started to watch it when I was at the 6th grade, but it was the 5th season I've seen first, it was Saturday and 1 pm, I just thought it was a nice vampire film, firstly I didn't like it too much (probably because I didn't know the past of it) but then I became an addict of it, the first thing made me bewildered, people weren't escaping from vampires, they were fighting with them as normal, then I understood it wasn't a horror film but everything, it was funny, it was sad, it had got love inside, and the hate, and though I couldn't realize that time, now I realize that there was a lot of philosophie in it! I watched the 5th, 6th and 7th seasons, and then I watched its 2nd, 3rd, and 4th seasons too.
Buffy was the first TV show which was foreign I've watched, it helped me too much to improve my English*, it taught me good & bad and that's what I still think, the bad and good comes from nature, and you should accept everything as it is, so I can say that Buffy is the first thing made me ask and think about life, well maybe you can think I'm exaggerating but no, Buffy was just the another life for me, in middle school.

*my native language is Turkish.

Where to start when it comes to Buffy. I started at season 6 and had no idea what I thought of it. OMWF was the only episode I remembered. And I never watched buffy again after that. I moved to the USA 2 years after Buffy ended. I turned on the tv and saw Buffy on fx and had no idea what season it was. Then sitting there watching it, I learned it was season 7. I had no idea there was a season 7. But I watched, everyday, twice a day. And I was hooked. I don't know if it took some more growing up to do for me to have the connection I do with the show, and the cast. But whatever it was, it's strong.
I caught up. I taped all the episodes from 1-144. And I was in heaven. I would sit down and watch Buffy all day.
It became more than an obsession to me. It was life. A little bit of me, or maybe even alot was in this new world. Almost everything I thought about was Buffy.
So I went on, bought some merch and the chosen collection and started Buffy back from the beginning again. Everytime I watched an episode, it was like watching it for the first time. I was learning new things I had missed before. And I was learning new things about myself also. I found myself in so many of the characters. Buffy's strength, Xanders loyalty and nerdiness, Giles' control, etc. Every one of the characters gave me just a little more of them, which had me give them a little more of me.
I still sit here today, having Buffy marathons. Learning new things. And I realize that Buffy will be the most powerful show ever for me. It's my way of life and I owe almost eveything I am to it. I have grown with these characters, with the show. I have become the best person I can be, watching them be the best people they can be. Th realization that we are all flawed, and that here is a show to help us realize that. A show that doesn't sugar coat life. A show like Buffy The Vampire Slayer should never go unwatched, unheard of, but celebrated throughout history.
Buffy my saviour. My for now, forever and for always.

Buffy means everything to me, and I say mean and not meant as even when season 8 ends, ill still watch the btvs on DVD almost every day.

Buffy showed me what I want to do with my life, I want to write by the way.

I would sit and watch buffy alone, with my friends or as I did a great many times, while chatting to my friend Lee as we both enjoyed Buffy on the BBC, and i would laugh, cry and go on the ride that the cast and crew hoped i would go on.

Then Buffy ended and bamm i was heart broken, i started to think back over the years and i realised, that i wanted to do 'that'.

I wanted to provide people with entertainment that would make them feel all the emotions i had felt while watching buffy, at that time i wasnt sure how, since then i have came to realise that comics are calling.

So i'm 21 now, am i a writer, well hell no if being a writer means being paid to write, i have a crappy job, but the bright side is, im using my wages to pay artist to draw my characters.

When i get some of them sorted and the characters are drawn, ill post pics of them.

Anway in short Buffy showed me what i want to do with my life and i cant thank the cast and crew enough.

What does Buffy mean to me?

Buffy means the future, my future.

Buffy was me, growing up. From elementary school to my junior year of high school, it was the only television show that i followed all the way through to the end and still is to this day (i stopped watching angel by season 4, for no other reason than i had no time).

It's also solace. I have been through a lot in my life... here's the short of it (and i have learned to not be ashamed anymore to admitting any of this, as we all have our problems)... from age 13 on i suffered from depression, general anxiety disorder and self-injury and when i was older, anorexia. I was in a whirlwind of problems but Buffy was an hour out of my week that things were ok. I just found myself so focused on this other world that i didnt think about my own for that short amount of time and it was like a breather for me!!!

Now as im older, it's also become something that has let me know i am not alone. I had mentioned in the actual thread about the episode, The Body, that i lost my mom this year. And i was afraid to watch this episode in my recent run through the series... but i did and was really moved in a way i wasn't the first time because i could relate. Relate to all the emotion, relate to the reactions, it was so real and so brutally honest and though i cried and cried the entire 40-odd minutes, i felt comfort too in knowing that joss had so wonderful portrayed something i thought would otherwise be impossible to explain by any means.
