After Angel went to hell Giles wanted to create "spell demanding"(?) to keep Angelus there. After a while Buffy tells Giles that Angelus wasn't Angelus when she staked him with the sword. Instead he was Angel again. She thought that this fact would be important for the spell. Then she leaves the room and Willow asks Giles wether this fact is important or not. And Giles replies that there wasn't a spell all the time. So what did Giles want to archieve with his lie? Or did I misunderstood the hole situation? Can someone help me out there? I has to think about this all the time.
What did Giles mean?

The whole thing was made up by Giles to make Buffy speak about what happened, like to share the burden. Also because, deep inside, Giles is an old nosy english lady 😛

I think Giles knew it was Angel who she killed and just wanted it out of her, he was so scared for Buffy when she left he would travel worldwide to find her because he was scared if something bad happened because when Jenny died Giles went crazy but Buffy stopped him and was there for him and Giles wanted to be there for Buffy he knew Buffy wouldn't just leave Sunnydale if she killed Angelus but if it was Angel he understood so the whole fake spell was just to let him know what really happened and to make sure Buffy was okay.
