What did she have to lose?

In Becoming Pt2 in a conversation with Whistler he said she had one thing to lose. I watched it today and it really baffled me for what she had to lose. Was it Angel' love or something?

Buffy: I can deal. (sadly) I got nothing left to lose. (leaves)

Whistler: Wrong, kid. You got one more thing.

She thought there was no way to bring Angel back cuz she didn't think Will was able to do the spell,so in theory she had nothing to loose cuz she didn't care for Angelus obviously....but then she lost Angel.

Whistler was putting the emphasis on the whole 'you're the only person you've got' theory. I took it to mean that this situation would ruin her, she wouldn't be herself anymore. She lost herself. This is evidenced in 'Anne'. She changed her name, tried to lose herself because of all the pain associated with the life she lives.

I took it that the one thing she had to lose was Angel because to me that was the only thing she lost after the fight. But reading Mesektet Ra reason I'm starting to change my mind. Like Magui said, Buffy didn't think Willow could do the spell to bring Angel back so to Buffy Angel was already lost. Buffy did get him back for a brief moment and then she had to kill him.

I think I'm going to go with Angel though because after that she really did lose him. There was no chance for Willow to even try the spell and as far as Whistler was concerned Angel wasn't coming back from the hell dimension because we learn in Amends that it was the First that brought him back.

Well yeah... I won a "Mr Know-it-all" award. 🙂 Just joking. I do think I know the answer to this one though. I agree with Mesktet RA. The only thing Buffy had left to lose was herself.

It's made clear later on in the Angelus-Buffy fight scene.

Cut to the atrium. Angelus plays with his sword, idly pointing it at
Buffy. She looks up at him, frightened.

Angelus: Now that's everything, huh? No weapons... No friends... No
hope.

Buffy closes her eyes and steels herself for whatever's coming.

Angelus: Take all that away... and what's left?

He draws the sword back and thrusts it directly at her face. With
lightning-fast reflexes she swings up with both arms and catches the
blade between the palms of her hands. She opens her eyes and meets his.

Buffy: Me.

i thought she didn't change it, it was anne (or the middle name as least... wasn't it)

I think Whistler meant her soul. She already lost her lover, and in a sense her mother, they took Giles. Thats pretty much her life- her livelyhood. If Angel turned her- she would have lost her soul.

Did this interaction with Whistler take place after her mum gave her that ultimatum about if you leave on't think about coming back?

If so then she also had her family to loose as well.

I think that Whistler's words could be interpretted in many ways.

First, theres the whole Buffy only has herself thing. Which makes since as we see Angel almost getting Buffy, but she states that she has herself(as nerd4hire pointed out), but thats what its always been like for her. I mean shes the Slayer. Even with friends and family and a semi-life, Buffy has always been alone. She may walk in the world during daylight, but she lives at night. Its her destiny, its what shes supposed to do.

Second, it could mean Dawn. Dawn would come about 3 years from now. We've never seen Buffy love something as much as Dawn. Although I think thats probably not it, but it struck a cord to me.

Third(which I think to be true) is her future, not who she is right now. In Becoming, Buffy was at one of her hardest times in her life. She had so much to live for and so much to do in life, but it was all becoming a burden(no pun intended), but she had the potential back then to change the world and make her life better. I think thats one of the reasons Buffy always worked so hard: so she could be normal one day. Its what she deserves.
