I'm really not sure what to think on this matter. In season six, you think that he wants the chip out, but why would he go to a demon in Africa to get the chip out? What could a demon do about removing the chip? That's the Initiative's job. But it seems to me more logical that a demon could deal out a soul for a vampire. So I'm leaning more towards the Soul in. The quote from Sleeper really makes me think he wanted the soul in.

For the first half of the trials, I was under the impression that Spike was there to get his chip out. But underlying, I think there was this feeling of tortured wanting that I couldn't quite put my finger on.

At the end, I knew Spike was there to get his soul. Because of Buffy. Because that's the type of person Spike is, beneath all the bravado and leather. He wanted to give her the man she deserved. And you know what? I'm a Spuffy, SO THERE. Bite me.

I think the demon that Spike went to is a bit like the genies from Charmed, he got what he wished for but their was a twist.

In my opinion Spike went to get his chip out, but the demon twisted his words. Spike's former self was human, the next best thing for a dead vampire to get to be his former self is a vampire with a soul.

In an interview on the Season 6 dvd's Joss admits that he wanted James to play Spike as if he wanted his chip out but really in fact he wanted his soul back. Although he would have a soul he would be nothing like Angel.

I think deep down he wanted to get his soul back, but we were tricked to believe he wanted his chip out so we wouldn't suspect his soul would be returned to him. Because he wanted to give Buffy "What she deserved" and that was what she deserved.. If that makes sense? lol. 🙂

You have to take into consideration that spike has a delusional fantasy of him as the supportive boyfriend type and buffy as the weak helpless girly. That is why he felt he was able to force himself upon buffy. And for a second buffy wanted to give up. She wanted to just accept that she was his little girl. She wanted to be taken care of. That is why she didn't just rip his head off instantly. But due to the brutal nature of his assault, she eventually was forced to accept the cold reality that she has to fend and provide for herself.

As for the issue of what spike was after in the caves, Because of his fantasy, i believe he felt that he could still fix the situation to his altered reality. So he went to get his soul, thinking that buffy may still se the "big bad" in him. He thought that the reason buffy fell in love with angel was the fact that he could be bad, but chose not to. He chose to protect the inoccent. And even though spike protects the inocent in a fassion, He still has the constant urges to feed. And that urge makes him fell impotant in a sense. He went to get his soul as a sort of metaphorical viagra. It would show buffy that he was willing to do what ever it took to be with her. And he believes that by getting his soul, he will be rid of the urges to feed. Making him un-reliant on the "Viagra"
