What did they use for.....

I was just wondering one day with my best friends and we were drinking cranberry juice and I thought it looked like blood. Then it got me thinking what they used for Angel or Spike or any other vampires when they drank "blood". It looks really and it's thick too. And I also wonder if it tasted like fruity or something. Very curious right now. And hyper. I'm always hyper at night. hehe.😀

Russell? Let me guess. Not big on the daylight and the mirrors? Drinks a lot of V-8?

V-8 is apparently a bright red vegetable drink, maybe they use that. They probably chuck in a load of stuff to give it the colour and thickness, which probably isn't too nice for the actors but gets the job done.
 
I read somewhere that they had magic cups. It looked like they were drinking but they weren't.

I remember having a bottle like that when I was really little 😀
 
But sometimes they gotta be drinking for real. The outtakes from first episode in season 4 when Angel's choking in blood. He's got blood all over his face.
 
I always thought it looked too thick, viscous to be real blood"”like syrup. Like when Angel would get bitch-slapped by The Beast or someone and it's oozing out of his mouth....yeesh.
 
its some form of syrup i think. like in Scream the bad guys were using corn syrup. probably something like that. Cant be juice cos it has to be thick and non-see-through.
 
I don't think they used those special cups cuz in season 4 of Buffy episode Hush Spike got a cup of blood out of the refrigerator that was in a mug that said kiss the liabrain. (sp?) and it didn't look like V-8 cuz it was to thick and dark. I think it is some kind of syrup but I would think that wouldn't taste too good.

Maybe it was ketchup. heh, kidding. But ew! I never thought about the "blood" they have to drink. I think it looks really...ehm.. icky(?).
 
I always thought it looked kinda tasty lol. Maybe for scenes when the character isn't supposed to enjoy the blood (eg Wes in Guise wil be Guise) they use actual pig blood for effect, I guess it'd be ok to drink if it was kept sterilized.
 
It is probably some crazy mix of ingredients all thrown together, until the special effects crew felt it was good enough. Who knows what could be in there.
 
It has to be tasty though since they have to drink it. I know I would want it to be tasty. I always kinda thought it looked tasty. Or maybe I curious to see if it is tasty.😀

Well, it doesn't necessarily HAVE to be tasty. I mean, Peter Jackson made Dominic Monaghan drink undiluted cola sryup (you know, the stuff they add to soda water to make, like Coke and stuff) in The Two Towers scene where Merry is made to drink orc-draught, so I guess the actors could force their way through...whatever the prop department thought looked good on camera.
 
I got to go with Cron syrup. It would work for the thinkness if it was room temperature or even a little wram. And Food colloring added to it. Thats what think thay used in some of the older moives. At lest I herd that form some friend not sure if its ture but it sounds good to me..
 
Here's what James Marsters says in his most recent Q&A session at a convention -

Q) What did they use for when you were drinking blood?

A) Strawberry Quik. But when I was working on stage, I was always obsessed with getting the blood just right. For Buffy, we would actually have paramedics on set because some people were known to just pass out on the concrete.

I never had strawberry quik but I never pictured it to look like blood. Why would anyone drink it if it did? Maybe they put extra food coloring in it?
