I often hear it said by many fans that the first few seasons (particularly 1 - 3, but also 4) we're far better than the last seasons (5 - 6). Personally, I find myself agreeing that the earlier seasons we're far better than the later seasons. This isn't just about Bangel vs. Spuffy. This is about a great many things from the overall feel of the seasons to the big bads to the character lineups to the storylines, etc.

I personally am a huge Bangel shipper, so obviously I prefer the earlier seasons. Buffy and Angel just had something so incredible that he never had with anyone else whether it be Darla or Cordelia or whoever. Likewise, Buffy could never have what she had with Angel with anyone else whether it be Riley or Spike or whoever. Angel loved Buffy so much that even after she sent him to Hell because she had to and he was trapped there for hundreds of years because time moved differently there, when he came back, he still loved Buffy. This, to me, is so much more intense and powerful than Spike getting his soul for Buffy. Whedon himself has flip flopped about which pairing he personally prefers, but he has always maintained his stance that "Bangel is the greatest love story that he will ever tell," as he recently admitted in the he twentieth anniversary celebration when he did the interview.

Regarding Willow's and Xander's romances, I feel that Tara and Anya are their true soul mates and this is one of the things that I preferred about the newer seasons. I liked Cordelia with Xander , but I think Anya goes much better with him. As far as Oz goes, for me, it's not even a question, Tara goes far better with willow than oz does. I never considered Oz to be a particularly great character. I felt like he was very bland and his only purpose on the show was being Willow's boyfriend. I've seen some that agree with me on this and others that don't. There is no denying that willow loved Tara far more than oz and she even chose her over Oz. Ozs departure really didn't bother me much, but I found myself missing Cordelia a lot. She has amazing development on Angel the series, but no one can ever replace classic Cordelia.

Another thing that bothers me is Jenny calendar. Her death was very tragic and although I am not contesting it even though I wish that she would have lived, I really loved her appearances on the show and thought she had great chemistry with Giles. The writers tried to give him a new girlfriend d (I think her name was Olivia) and she seemed okay, but we only saw her in like one or two episodes and I think Jenny was just so unforgettable.

As far as big bads go, I thought that the first two seasons with the master and the Angelus-Spike-Drusilla thing were incredible. I found the mayor to be a bit bland, despite how awesome season 3 was. But ultimately in S3, Faith was the one that really made the season in terms of who the villain was much moreso than even the mayor did. Buffy's and Faith's chemistry was incredible and the plotline was amazing. Faith was very interesting and you couldn't help but feel sorry for her because she definitely had a rough life. In S4, I found Adam to be odd... He was nowhere near as memorable as the master or the vampire trio or even Faith... But S4 was still good overall and definitely seemed to serve as a trial for Buffy with her having to move on from Angel. I just wish that everything after season four would have been different. In season five, glory was a good villain, but I thought she deserved a better ending where she and Buffy fought or something rather than the one she got at the end of five with turning into the guy and just dying. For such an epic villain, she had a shitty ending. With the trio of nerds in season 6, I thought they were ridiculous and Whedon could have done so much better. Dark Willow was interesting, but I don't think she was necessary and I think that killing Tara was a huge mistake and it was the most heartbreaking thing on the show since Angel left.

As far as the overall feel of the seasons goes, I think that the earlier seasons had much better and darker feels to them than the newer ones did. The newer seasons really didn't seem to be that dark and they were more about Buffy dealing with adulthood and babysitting Dawn's annoying a**.

This brings me to my next point. Dawn. I, like most of the fandom, thought that her presence on the show was an absolute annoyance. She dumbed it down and made it so much more juvenile than it needed to be. I found her to be the worst thing the show ever came up with and honestly, as breathtakingly beautiful as buffys speech and sacrifice were at the end of S5, I think dawn should have died instead of Buffy and all memories of her should have been erased (which apparently to is what happens when she dies as evidenced by a scene from the comics where her disappearance means the loss of all memories involving her.

In S5, I think that killing off Joyce, as sad as it was, was a very good yet sad idea because it made Buffy truly transition to adulthood and she completely lost the loving comfort of her mother, which is one of the scariest things one can imagine.

I also that Drusilla deserved a much better ending than what she got. She was such a great character and I feel that Spike , without her, completely lost his edge and turned into a whiney, lovesick puppy over Buffy. Spike was much better as villain.

I've said this before on others posts and I'll say it again, I think that a much much better ending for the show should have been that everything went as it did up until the end of season 5. Instead, dawn would have died and all memories of her would have been erased. Tara and Anya both would have lived and instead of the nerd trio and dark willow Arc in S6, I think that Drusilla should have come back and got Spike to get his edge back and we could've had something along the likes of season 2 for season 6. Angel could have made a guest appearance at the end of 6 to help Buffy fight Spike and drusilla. And Cordelia could have made a guest appearance too and it would have been interesting to see how everyone would react to the person she became in her absence from Buffy's show. The season could have ended with Buffy and angel making some kind of truce or something with Spike and drusilla and they would return in the next season to help Buffy fight the First. For season 7, Angel could have come back as a permanent cast member or at least made a significant amount of guest appearances (this would have been around angel S4 which is when the show started to really go downhill in a lot of fans' eyes with Connor and the whole Cangel thing that many fans hate and then Cordelia tragically dies). I think Angel should have been freed of the curse and he and Buffy could finally be together and then they would fight the first and Spike and drusilla would help them. For me, I think this would have been a much much much better ending for buffys show than what we actually got.

Yes, I know my Bangel bias shows lot, and I definitely wish everyone could have gotten a much happier ending (Tara and Anya never dying, etc.), But I felt like the show had such a crappy ending compared to what it should have had.

What are your thoughts? Agree? Disagree? Your own opinions about whether the earlier or later seasons we're better and how the show should have ended?

I agree with most of what you said. It definitely would have worked if Dawn had died instead of Buffy (and I bet it would have made Dawn really popular in the fandom). I don't think that the memories of Dawn should be erased though, but Buffy can go with her season 6 depression without being pulled from heaven. I think that the early seasons favoured Buffy and Giles, whilst the later seasons favoured Willow and Xander. Also characters like Spike, Andrew and Anya were really showing the writer's biased opinions in the later seasons which didn't happen in the earlier seasons. All in all I preferred the earlier seasons.

S2,3,4,8,5,1 follow tight in that order in my preferences. S6 is very ambivalent to me. I've read great meta that are not contradictory to what's on screen and explain it into something very worthwhile to me. Still, when I actually watch it I don't get drawn in and I'm more appalled than I like. S06 feels weirdly dogmatic and sledgehammering to me. S07 is easily my least favorite season, ignoring S09 & 10 (which are beyond category). There are single elements I like but an overall messy plot, contrivances en masse, an unlikeable protagonist, *Andrew*, forced metaphors and allegories spoil it for me. From a Watsonian perspective, I'd characterize S07 shortly to "The side which was less stupid and luckier won the battle. Buffy Vs. The First is a stupidity contest, the world its wager", which isn't very flattering. From a Doylist perspective, it's female empowerment and progression/transgression which woefully falls flat because the actual story doesn't hold up.

I always have trouble answering that question because I adore all seasons from 1 to 5 and only have problems with the last 2 seasons. So for me the separation isn't really HS or post high school Buffy or even Dawnverse and pre-Dawnverse Buffy but simply The WB Buffy or UPN Buffy. And I pick The WB Buffy without hesitation.

Not so clear cut for me either. My two favourite seasons are 3 and 5.

However I do think that season 6 and 7 are somewhat lacking in what drew me to Buffy. An emphasis on friendships and a good balance between drama and levity.

I love the whole show and I really think the early seasons are excellent, but I prefer the later seasons, if I have to pick. There is some bias in there for me because Spike is by far my favourite character and I think that his story arc across the whole series was incredibly strong. What I like about it most is what I like about the series the most as well, and definitely plays into why I'd pick the later seasons, and that is that they are progressive stories. I love that we are watching the lives of the characters as they grow and develop. Each challenge and period of growing up is informed by everything that has come before, positive and negative experiences, and it just adds such depth to all their stories. I enjoyed the Bangel romance as it played a really important role in Buffy's life, but I also then enjoyed seeing her further relationships and how they worked and how they didn't following it. I wasn't personally at all keen on Riley/Buffy as a relationship, but that didn't stop it being a very interesting one to see within her overall path. Again, it is all about her progression for me and the effect and influence what came before has on the characters we follow.

This is also why I'd never agree with wanting Spike to return to his original character, it sends him backwards and keeps him static and that is just far less interesting to me. It works better for characters that have small roles/stories if you don't move them along particularly, but for one of the main characters it is just weak writing to 'fix' them I think. For me personally, your later season suggestion for him would have just been a rerun of what we got in S2-3. As it was in the show, what we learned about him in the later seasons through the flashbacks really informs how his story progresses and it is great coherent characterisation. I don't think he became whiney but that we started to understand layers and what was underneath the bravado and attitude of S2. It made his choices and actions in the earlier seasons more interesting in hindsight in fact once you knew more about him before he came to Sunnydale and from his original human days. Also, I think it was important that we got to see Spike fail and fall in S6 before he moved forwards. The verse holds up better overall if there is a limitation on what a soulless vampire can achieve, and if Spike is shown to be individually different because of his personality, his motivations driven from his human years, just the same as every other vampire and no more than that.

I thought S5 and S6 were incredible. They are really my favourites and I loved the introduction of Dawn, even if I found the character herself irritating on occasions. I can see and understand why some people would have preferred the show to have ended at S5. As Buffy's story had reached a natural conclusion there, it could have been the place to stop the series for sure. But I'd have hated to have missed out on seeing more of all the character though. I do think they should conclude the series eventually, have a final comic season, but I think I'd personally prefer to think that their lives are all still going on, that we've left them to continue unwatched basically.

There are earlier seasons that I like more than S7, The First as a big bad and the potentials were weaker for me than S2 and 3. But there really aren't any seasons that I dislike, so S7 doesn't get a negative vote as such really, even if there are earlier seasons that I like more than it. Spike's development in S7 is fantastic and the positive change in his relationship with Buffy is great too. I also enjoy AtS 1-4 as well and, chronologically then AtS 5 and the comics continued the story of these characters that I love. The comics get very split reactions but they have mostly worked in at least the broad strokes for me as they continue to progress and develop everyone. So still the essence of what I love about the show as the stories continue to unfold.

S1 is a low budget mess saved only by the creative story telling and great casting. I much, much preferred the later seasons. Buffy is one of the few shows that aged its characters in a way that was realistic and entertaining. I watched the series as an adult so I enjoyed the characters as they matured and faced real life vs high school problems.

i related more to the later seasons as i only began watching the show after highschool. although i do love the first three seasons. it also depends on why im watching it. sometimes i want to watch to be nostalgic and then other times i want to watch to get back into the show an the world.

I prefer the later Seasons, and no, it isn't really about Buffy/Spike. I just have a very hard time identifying or getting a whole lot of interest in, a bunch of high school kids and their problems, even when those problems are depicted metaphorically as dealing with vampires and demons.

Early seasons. The writing was better and the dialogue- which always managed to smooth over any of the holes in the plots- was A LOT sharper and wittier.

Canonverse over Dawnverse any day.
What do you mean canonverse over dawnverse?

There's just something so special about stuff like becoming part 2 and the ending of the first seasons that bring back such memories. The newer seasons just couldn't touch it.

Caconverse is S1-4, with characters we know and whose journey we have seen. Dawnverse is S5+, with characters whose journey I don't know ( I have my original memories after all) so I don't really know them.

I prefer the earlier seasons, Season 2 is my favourite. I think the earlier seasons had a nice balance of light and dark whereas the later seasons were all doom and gloom. Spike works better as a villain (season 2) or if he's not actively villaining (Lover's Walk and season 4) then he works better as a thorn in Buffy's side. The moment the writers decided to have Spike in love with Buffy, then they had to change his character in order to make it work.

"Passion" was a dark episode, "Becoming part 1&2" were dark episodes but then we get a nice balance of lighter ones like "Halloween", "School Hard" etc. "Band candy" from season 3 is a fun episode but it's not camp.

Seasons 1-4 were a mixture of dark and light, Seasons 5-7 were a mixture of dark and darker.

Everyone knows I prefer the early seasons. The early cast had awesome energy and great chemistry. It was a cozy, intimate environment. Everyone interacted, there was lots of Scooby time, Giles was taken more seriously, the show had more spirit, the drama was better, there were less plot-holes and plot-armored characters, the villains were more entertaining, the humor wittier, the writing sharper, the cheese cheesier and everyone shone brighter... Ah, things were so much better until s4.

I agree pretty much with this. The later seasons did have some nice things eg Anya, Tara, Spike's backstory, Xander and Willow's yellow crayon scene, but the early seasons were just more satisfying.

I enjoy rewatching the early seasons more. The characters are far more fresh and act like real human beings - unlike the later seasons where they seem to have lost their humanity and common sense like in Flooded and Empty Places. On a more bias level, I love High School Xander way, way, way, way more than Adult Xander. He's far more charming and brave and central in the early seasons.

Think we had a thread a while back where I mentioned that there were eras of Buffy. I guess maybe you could split them up 1-4 and 5-6 or the WB & UPN. I think maybe another way may be like this: the high school years (1-3), the college years: 4-5, and then the adult (dark) years 6-7. For me there will always be something special about the high school years, though. I'm sure it helps that (arguably) the best 2 seasons (2 & 3) were amongst them.
