What do people tell you when you tell them you're a Buffy fan?

Often when you tell people that you love Buffy, they react sort of... not very good. Like it's a sin. Like you're stupid for watching "the stupid show", without even knowing anything about it. Buffy is not a thing to be ashamed of. Yet, other people do think that, they don't understand.

So what kind of responses do you get when you tell people that you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

I've had people say "Buffy... the Vampire Slayer?" and then when I say "yep" they're like "... oh..."

But more often than not, I get people who are like "I've seen a few episodes of that..." and that's it.

I don't think people react to it in the way that you should be ashamed for watching it, i think that (depending on your age) they expect you to not like it anymore as they think it's probably something you should grow out of, which is wrong.

I don't really get any reaction to be honest minus the "Oh....." followed by that tumble weed silence lol.

I've had people go "What? No you don't!" Then they chuckle and when I insist I do they usually just seem stunned. Lol, cracks me up every time, cause I'll be like "Oh you don't know how much I like the show" 🙂

To quote a few of my friends on the subject...

Friend #1: "Buffy? Really?"

Friend #2: "Twlight's better!"🙄

Friend #3: I mean, the show's alright but....
Me: What?
Friend #3: It's her name. BUFFY. I mean, if you're gonna be a vampire slayer, can't you have a better name?
Me: I think it's original
Friend #3: Whatever

Yeah, a merry bunch of friends i have, right?

My dad makes fun of me endlessly.

But the rest of the fam watches it too. 😀

I do have one friend that likes AtS but not Buffy so I get some crap from her sometimes. But that's about it.

They don't tell my anything these days, 'cause I don't tell them that I like it. Not because I'm ashamed or something, no way, but they wouldn't know the show. Well, maybe the name.

And then they'd ask what it's about and either I tell them a long story, so they have an idea what the show's like, or I tell them a short story and they don't get it and maybe think it's weird.

My boyfriend calls me a geek, but only in an affectionate way. Pretty much all my male friends like it, my best friend likes it but only in the sense that shed watch it when it was on, she wouldn't go out of her way to watch it. My other friends don't really say much about it, they might ask what I'm watching and I'll tell them, but I don't think I've ever had a really negative response.

Well, I always got the "Really? Your like, eighteen years old..." acting like the show is for children? It is definitely not a kids show, you don't have to grow out of Buffy. People acted like what was said above, like I should be ashamed of it. My boyfriend even makes fun of me!

So, eventually I just stopped telling people lol too much of a hassle to have to tell them the long story of why it isn't for kids, and why it's a great show. Not worth my time!

I get pretty much the same reaction, if and when the subject comes up around my friends, but at age 64, it's not quite the same. At my age, it's called being eccentric. Of course, one of my best friends collects model tanks, so if he mentions anything to me about sitting in front of a TV watching reruns of a show cancelled 10 years ago, I just point out that he spends his time in a basement gluing little plastic models together and getting high on glue fumes. Shuts him right up.

I give them the facts.....

#41 on TV Guide's list of All-Time Greatest TV Shows
In the Top 100 TV Shows of All-Time according to Time Magazine
"The Body" has been called the best episode of TV ever.
#2 in Empire's Top Cult Shows ever
#3 in 2004 and 2007 on TV Guide's Top Cult Shows Ever

And if they laugh after that, I stake them. 😛

(Just kidding... I haven't staked anyone....yet)

I've never come across someone who reacted negatively or laughed at me for liking Buffy. More often than not, when I tell someone I like Buffy they get excited or nostalgic and bring something about the show up that they remember.

I'm always surprised by how many people I come across that use to watch Buffy. Just the other week my boss (who is in her late 50's) randomly brought Buffy and Angle up, and just about everyone in the office mentioned that they had watched the show at some point.

I usually get a 'what's that?' or 'oh, I've heard of that', since people my age were probably just born when Buffy was airing. And then, for some inexplicable reason, always say 'I hate vampire shows like Twilight. I mean, really, a vampire named Buffy?' =.=" Every. Single. Time. So I have to tell them that it's Buffy the Vampire SLAYER.

A lot of people I've talked to about it have seemed to think that Buffy is a kids show, so I tell them that it is not!
But sometimes I've met someone who likes it too, but they don't love it nearly as much as I do.

Some people are surprised that I watch shows like Buffy as it's a bit teen-ish for me. I think because I read so much they expect me to only watch documentaries or dramas or something. I've been called a nerd for my TV and film habits but that's usually due to things like Stargate SG-1 and Star Trek rather than Buffy. Buffy, in comparison, is relatively normal.

This is the reaction I pretty much have. If I talk about Buffy in front of other people my age they usually go "Wow, you still watch that?" and give me this look like "Aren't you a little old to like that show?". Same thing when I used to watch "Degrassi" (before they took all the good actors off and replaced them all with this new cast which I hate). Occasionally I'll run into the person who says "OMG I LOVE Buffy!" but hardly ever.

Even though I think Buffy and Angel are good shows they're not my favourite ones so they're not the first ones I mention when someone ask me what I watch. Sometimes it comes up and when it does the response is either "That's that show with vampires right?" or they just look like a question mark. Some ask me about it and what I like about it but it's never been more than that. They can probably tell that I like it and leave it with that. I've encountered a few that have watched and liked it which have been nice.

People don't react to the show itself, most I've talked to about the show haven't really watched it or know anything about it. People do tend to react to how geeky and excited I get when I talk about it though. 😀 never in a mean way, more "oh, you're so cute!" and laugh. I've convinced many people to watch it too and now almost all of my close friends love it.

I think people tend to see it as a quirk.... I was having a conversation with my coworkers about odd things about us and I'm like, "you know, I can't really think of anything" and they all just stare at me and one of them grabs my phone and holds it up cause I have a big buffy picture on the back of it and I'm constantly randomly quoting buffy lines that no one gets but me. But I'm like, well that's not odd! Hmmm apparently tastes vary. 🙂
