what do you do when your favorite fictional character doesn't have a last name?

Wait. The creators might give them a last name eventually, Faith and Kendra didn't have last names for a while but now they do 🙂
 
Is this to write fanfics? I know some fandom have an agreed last name headcannon for the character. Or some authors will just invent a name.

Aside from writing I don't really see why a last name would be necessary.
 
I'm annoyed that Kennedy doesn't have a last name. It makes finding content and fanfic for her more difficult. I'm so happy they gave Faith a last name 🙂. It's kind of hard to believe it was never said on either show. I feel like Giles or Wesley or Angel would have said it at some point when talking about her, but no.

I actually didn't know that, but to be honest I never cared enough about Kennedy to worry about it. 😀

It doesn't bother me when characters don't have last names. Usually it's for a reason; either the writers don't care enough to provide one or contextually they don't need one (for example Offred in The Handmaid's Tale)

When I write, I certainly don't give every character a last name. The reader needs to know my main character John's last name is Smith, but they don't need to know the name of the guy who served him at the shop is called David Jones, especially when David Jones serves no purpose to the plot.

You need to work on giving your characters more interesting names 😛
 
Spike's full name is William Pratt. It was just recently confirmed as canon, thanks to the comics.

Dunno what Liam's last name was, though. I like to think it was either Gallagher or Howlett.

Yeah, in olden days it was a slang word for "butt." Which is where the word "pratfall" came from.

I always imagined Liam's last name to be Gilhooley (there was a William Patrick Gilhooley mentioned in one of my favorite John Wayne movies, "McLintock") A terrible Irish name, I know, but I liked it.
 
William Pratt totally suits human William. I'm obsessed with Whedonverse names. There's usually a lot of thought put into them.

For example, Liam and William; both the same name. Liam is the Irish version of the British William, both descending from the German name Wilhelm. Angel and Spike are linked by etymology, as well as becoming soulled vampires in love with the Slayer. It's poetic. 😉
 
I have read so much Spuffy fanfic, and Spike's been given so many different names, it made me happy when he finally got an official surname. It sort of unified all those fan-fictional Spikes and Williams I'd been reading about.

How do we know that not her last name . For all we know her real name is ***** Kennedy .
 
Well, We only know Cordys parent as mr. Chase and mrs. Chase, and we dont know Angels and Darla and Spike and Drusillas last name is before they were Vampire and when they were human (Liam, William, Darla, Drusilla). Mr. Trick we know he have last name and but dont know his first name, and know that before Harmony last mame as kendell before she was Vampire.

Am I the only one who thinks it's cool not to have a last name? The name Drusilla, all by itself, just strikes fear in people. Like what Angelus says to Spike in the Destiny flashback.

I'm pretty sure Adele wouldn't be as famous if she were known as Adele Adkins 🙂

Same with Beyonce Knowles and Madonna Ciccone. Sometimes mononyms are just better 😀
 
And sometimes it better to change your name too.
Spike is a lot more scary then William esp when you find out why he was called Spike.
