I feel like there's a lot of negativity about certain characters, seasons, plots, etc. on the boards lately, and while I don't think criticism is a bad thing, I think it'd be nice to remember what made us all come here in the first place!

So, why do you think Buffy is so good? What makes you love it to the point you want to talk about it with strangers over the Internet? 😛

Thanks for this thread. Talking about the positive things is so much more fun imho.
I initially became a fan of the show because of the writing, and the character relationships. I loved the dynamic in the group in the early seasons, and being a high school girl at the time, I loved the whole Buffy/Angel drama. However, the witty writing and character development is what kept me a fan. After all these years, I don't know if I will ever love characters as much as I love the Buffyverse characters (except for maybe the characters in "The Walking Dead" or "The Vampire Diaries"). It's hard for me to believe that 15 years later, I'm still willing to discuss a show that went off the air long ago. But then, I kinda feel like Buffy is to me what Gunsmoke is to my dad. 🙂

BTVS and ATS are amazingly written with immense emphasis placed on characters, character progressions, and is a perfect mix of many wonderful genres. From action to romance to comedy to horror and drama BUFFY and ANGEL have a masterful blend of artful amusement. Personally it has gotten me through many tough times and it seems theres no limit to how many times i can watch it and still enjoy it almost as much as i did the very first time i saw it(perhaps more.) 🙂

I like the fact that they blended action, horror, comedy and drama so well. That and sexy girls in skimpy clothes too.

More than anything, I love the writing, and how strong the characters are. That's the main draw for me. I love that this show doesn't try to sugarcoat things for the viewers, and at times, it's very, very real in the emotions it deals with.

There's so much that I love about Buffy, it'll always be the show closest to my heart. I can't pin point exactly what makes it so special, but I think that exactly it, it's so unique, it's the only thing out there like it.

The situations, the stories, the characters, it's part as to why I love the show, it's the only show where I get the feeling that those characters are like family to me, and seeing them go through everything feels very personal. It's probably why we fight so much over some of the things on the show, because we feel so strongly about our characters and our favorite seasons etc.

It's the humour and dialogue that makes it stands out imho.

BtVS are as best when they throw in jokes even in the most darkest moments.
Or the episodes that starts hilarious but turns and becomes very serious towards the end.

Also love much of the stupidity.
Buffy's impractical clothes while patrolling for example. I think that's just lovely and fun to watch.
It makes the show charming in some strange way that I can't really explain. 🙂

It's such an intelligent show. The dialogue in particular is quite smart. Even "ditzy" or "stupid" characters have some pretty cool lines to say.

It's also very funny. There's a lot of wit and humor. And it's scary sometimes, which I enjoy. I like the show's messages on morality and relationships (romantic or otherwise).

What do I love about buffy

Because it is a show for everyone . It also has strong characters. The main reasons I love buffy is that whenever I see a buffy thing or watch it on tv I feel really proud to be a massive fan of buffy and I also love angel the tv show aswell and buffy and angel is my icons and thank god I have friends like you on this forum
Buffy and Angel are my favourite supernatural shows on tv

Oh, let me counts the ways...

-Buffy is a woman, a heroine, who isn't defined by who she dates, she's her own person.
- Btvs shows real female friendship (very rare, even nowadays) between Buffy and Willow. Also shows male friendship pretty well (this isn't so rare, but still commendable)
- Story arcs that last an entire season changed the way pretty much all genre television shows were written.
- When the writers had really good characters (and actors) they knew it and let them stick around, and gave them their own great story arcs (Faith, Spike, Anya, Jonathan...etc.).
- a spin-off show that's at least as good as the original series (almost unheard of.)
- sharp dialogue, some of the cleverest, funniest television ever, ever written.
- I can't name another show where I love so many of the different characters.(at least a dozen of them, damn it.)
- hot chicks (hey, I can be shallow...)
- hot guys (and also open-minded.)
- and this is the important one, it took risks all the damn time, all through its run- 'Surprise' 'Becoming Parts 1&2', 'Hush, 'Restless', 'the Body', 'OMWF', Killing off Tara/The dark Willow arc, 'CWDP', 'Chosen', 'Not Fade Away' right up until its final season it took risks like no other show did (name one other television show that hasn't settled into some kind of rut after 6/7 seasons...), they didn't always pay off, they annoyed fans (hey, some of these things annoy me.) , but they were never, ever boring. And that's, ultimatly, a good thing. 🙂

I can't think of any more right now, but give me five minutes, I'll have another list, it's that kind of show.

I have to agree with the common theme here which is the writing--it's fabulous! The characters are extremely diverse, well-played and clever. Even Cordelia who, in the beginning, was not the smartest person, said some pretty hilarious lines in the first couple seasons of Buffy. I love Buffy and Angel because of their ability to make us feel like they really are real people! You get so emotionally involved in the characters, which is hard to find lately.

It makes me feel empowered. I love how I feel when I watch it. It's just done so well

What I like about it is the humor and its a place I can go to get away from everyone. It was my go to show during a rough time I had, its my escape. I also like its message, that good friends will always be there no matter what, if you're going through a rough patch or you are the chosen one to stand alone against the vampires, demons and forces of darkness.

There are two remarkable things about buffy to me. One is how every time I go back and watch it I realized how much it shaped my personality. And two is the broad scope of things that have been derived from buffy. Every supernatural show, and many not, have so many buffy influences it's crazy. Buffy is a masterpiece.

Well, I don't know exactly. I've started watching Buffy a few years ago and it was in time when I was really down. The show was my only pleasure, my escape from reality. It'll always be in my heart.
I love the characters, I love humour, relationships between characters, dialogues, stories, things that I can relate to, especially if I'm older now. I love that there are so many episodes I can watch and never get bored of them. There are so many reasons I can think of. But they are probably the same as yours. 🙂

To me, the best thing about the show is the characters. I grew attached to these characters and enjoyed the adventures they were plunged into as well as their interactions with each other. The storylines themselves are also a main contributing factor to why I love the series. Another great thing I found was that the series often threw curveballs where who/what you think is the monster isn't really the monster, and the monster is who you least expect. Even with the amount of times this was done, it still managed to do it, and there was only one instance where this didn't work (evil Cordelia, which I felt was just thrown in there out of the blue)

I love the diverse and overall well written characters, in a nutshell (as well as the diverse and well written relationships).

But in reality, it would be much easier to ask: What don't you love about Buffy?

That list is quite short.

The main types of television and film that I enjoy are action and comedy. Buffy provides plenty of both so straight away I was enjoying it. The reason I love it though is because however many years it is now since I first watched the show I'm still interested. Despite not being a comic book fan I've bought the Buffyverse stuff because I want to know what happens. Fundamentally it is the characters and relationships between those characters that lift the show above everything else for me. Mix the characters in with the action, comedy and interesting stories and it's a winner.

Even now while I'm re-watching the show I still care about what happens. You're drawn into the world. There are always funny lines that I've forgotten that make me laugh again and I'm still moved by certain events even though I know how they unfold. It's just a fantastic show. No other show takes up as much of my head space.
