First of all, I want to apologise, I'm sure this had been discussed on the boards before...
I'm interested to know, what do you guys 'believe'? What I'm asking is, how much of the supernatural themes explored on Buffy and Angel do you guys think is reality? Do you believe in the supernatural at all? In demons (no not the big horned ones - I'm referring more to evil spirt entities etc.), or in ghosts?

INTERESTING!

And, I don't know......next post....:Bolt:
No, really, logically, I would say I believe in very little about the "supernatural". Ghosts, I do believe in them, but I have reason to. Demons, I'm afraid the idea that horned ones popping in from other dimensions and vampires running around the sewers is slightly more believable. Does that make me a bad Catholic?

I guess MAYBE if I stretched the ghost theory far enough, I might be able to say that a ghost could take over a body and so therefore maybe a BAD person's ghost could "possess" a person. But, your basic demons that people talk about, I think are less likely than the Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot AND Aliens combined....and I do believe in those three!:lmao:

Edit:

But, you didn't SAY it was a ghost story thread!

I don't know, mine aren't very spooky, my aunt has better ones.

Most of you know my Mom died when I was born and I also had a best friend die when I was 13.
Most of them are just times when I feel "hugged".
But, my friend has been a bit more spooky. On the way home from the funeral, Phil Collins' Against All Odds came on the radio. Sure, pretty common at the time. It was quite eerie how well it fit with the scenerio.
As I got older, it's obviously become more and more rare to hear on the radio. And yet, MANY times when I'm horribly miserable, crying, sad, scared...things of that sort, it just pops on the radio. Three times on the way out of the cemetary to visit. And, in fact, just the other day when I was worried about my Dad's surgery, I got in the car to get my daughter and was worried and concerned that my Mom hadn't called yet and kind of half praying for someone up there to watch out for him and it popped on.

There was only one big one.
On one trip to the cemetary a few years ago (it was actually on the way between home and where I went to college) I had my dog with me. I lugged the poor thing everywhere. He was my first Chow and I was REALLY BIG on socializing him as a puppy.
Anyway, we were on our way to see my parents and I thought I might just bop by the cemetary to say hi and "show off" my puppy. (I know, not much to show a grave other than the possibility the dog would pee on the headstone, but it made sense to me.) I stopped the car and got out and the puppy LEAPT over the front seat and out the door (which he NEVER did and was barely big enough to do) and went tearing through the cemetary barking and growling like a lunatic.
There was stupid me, running behind him, looking for any cemetary workers or visitors and not being able to figure out why my sweet, adorable puppy was suddenly acting like Cujo.
He ran top speed through the cemetary and stopped short right in front of my friend's headstone barking and growling at the air.
He'd never been to the cemetary before and I just kept kind of staring around me to see if anyone was watching this insanity and had the chills like mad. (Not "supernatural" chills like they talk about, just creepy chills.)
I finally just said, "Ummmm...I brought my puppy to see you?" And the dog suddenly stopped all the barking and growling and went back to his normal, adorable self, like nothing had ever happened.
He never did it again. In fact, the next time I brought him, he was just a goofball and wanted to run all over the place for a place to pee.
But, it was enough to convince me.

reason to?? u wanna expand lol, that's kinda the point of the thread
As far as we're talking magic, yes I think it's possible. Probably not like in calling on goddesses in Latin or whatever, more in a natural way. It's hard to explain. There are just so many things we don't know about the world yet. Maybe if we knew everything, we wouldn't call it magic, rather science or something. For example, I do think telekenesis might be possible. Maybe there is some connection between us and the Earth that lets us do things most of us don't kow how to do now. Does that make me sound crazy? Well, if it does, I don't care.

Next is the ghost thing. And here, honestly, I don't want to know if they really exist. Or I would like to, but it would freak me out. What would I do if I actually saw a ghost? Probably scream and run. And if it was in my own home I would possibly die of fear. So, you see why I'm not too kean to know. However, I think ghosts might exist. Our world exists in many dimensions, many of those we can't really perceive, right? This gets me thinking that maybe we exist in all these dimensions and when we die it's only our body that dies so we are posibly still existing in other dimensions.

And demons I think are pretty unlikely, especially in the 'I'm gonna kill you all and trigger an apocalypse' way.

Summing up I'd like to say I don't really believe in anything, there are just some things I think are more possible and others less possible. So if you think either me or my theories are crazy, just say it, wouldn't offend me much.

lol i kinda agree with u on the not being so keen 2 kno..
Like I said in the "Religion"-thread, I have no idea about "the truth". Regarding anything. Geez, I don't even know whether this world "really" exists, so how can I know what exists in it or not? ::huh::

I tend to believe magic is quite possible, as I believe that everything is interconnected "in God" anyway (= pantheism), so anything might just affect anything else in any way (now, there's one cool def. of magic ^^ ). I'm fatalist enough to have no interest in testing that theory, however.

The existence of ghosts also fits my worldview without any real problem, but, just as SocialSuicide, I DON'T want to run into one, if they do exist, thank you very much. :aah:

With demons... I tend to see them "merely" as allegories of the darker aspects of human nature. That doesn't absolutely rule out that they might "manifest" themselves outside of one's head (think Buddhist tulpa - a projected "thought form") - but I'm rather positive that the risk of ever running into one of those walking around is veeeerrrrryyyy low indeed.

Spirits and ghosts and things like that- definitely real.

Vampires and stuff.. not including big horned demons of things like M'Fashnik... I like to believe they're real. Sounds weird doesn't it. but I really do like the idea that there's a supernatural world living in relative harmony with ours.

As for spirits and ghosts, well lets just say there's no way on earth I'd ever do a oujia board after the things I've been told by my family. My parents in particular. Mother did a oujia board once (I was a baby and my dad had gone to check on my brother and I in the house, leaving her and their friends to do oujia board in the garden). They managed to call a spirit pretending to be my grandmother (my dad's mum) who was really malevolent. Eventually when they refused to do what it asked, it told them that her son would die on his 40th birthday. This freaked my mother out and shoved the table over- but she never told my dad what was said until a few years later.

When she did finally tell him, the circumstances surrounding it were awful. My dad had an older brother, and my mother never told my dad what was said so he didn't worry, as she thought it was aimed at him. Turned out it wasn't, and my uncle died in a car crash on his 40th birthday- so the spirit was right, her 'son' was going to die- only it was her other son.

This story, and some other's ive been told by close family friends have put me off doing anything like that, yet I wholeheartedly believe in the existence of ghosts and spirits because of it all.

YIKES! I'll stick with the dog in the cemetary. THAT'S CREEPY!
I know it may sound kinda insane, but I've been always fascinated with magic despite I don't believe in it at all. I just love to imagine that it is real, if I write short stories there it's often something about magic. But when it comes to reality I can't really believe that something like this exists. It seems impossible to me that I could make something happen by spell or simple thought...

But I kinda believe in prophetic dreams. I don't have them myself but my friend and grandma told me about theirs and it made me think: hmm.. My grandma told me that once she dreamed about her unlce( who was already dead) He came to her and told her he's gonna take her with him. She told him he won't do this because he's old, she's younger and stronger and will push him away. But he went to somebody else, took him and went away. My grandma didn't see who it was. The other day her mum died. She had to be the one the uncle took away. So creepy....
My friend dreamed once about the boy she knew. He was playing in the football team. In the dream there was a match, but he was standind aside and massaged his ankle, it looked like it hurt him. The next day he twisted his ankle. This is strange too.

Hello Cutie
Prohetic dreams are real, in my opinion. It's a family trait on my dad's side, because myself, my dad and his mother had them, and I think it goes back further. It's freaky though!

I sometimes get the dreams. It just stinks there's not an easier way to tell normal dreams from Prohetic ones.
wow thanks for all your stories guys.. Oh and btw, when I said 'demons' I was more referring to the ones that posess people and haunt houses and stuff, not the corporeal kind like The Beast lol..

Hmm in that case, maybe.. i think possession can happen, but i believe its more ghosts/spirits etc finding a way to take over a body rather than demons or satan etc (like in Constantine for example!).

I was a fervent disbeliever in ghosts until I had an experience with one, but since that story is open to interpretation of my reactions I usually don't relate that one often. However I have a couple others.
The year before I got married my grandmother died so my wife and I bought the house and got married in '97. We completely redecorated the entire house.
My son was born in July of '99 and from the time he was an infant he used to look up at the curtains and laugh and wave, we just thought he liked the colors. As he got older the family room got converted into his giant play room. When he was 2 1/2 he wad Christmas eve dinner at my house and my family came over and my brother wanted to show his fiance the family photo albums that were in a hutch that was literally buried behind a baby gate and fisher price toys. So I dug them out and as they were looking at the photos my son waddles over and points to a picture of my grandfather and says "Da man in my room!!"
My grandfather died in the house in 1966.
My father died in '91 and there were a few times after that when my brother would have dreams about my dad. In these dreams they would sit outside and talk just as they did when when he was alive. He described the place to me, saying it wasn't his old house, it was different next to a stream that had killer whales diving in and out of the water. I was very close to my dad and didn't speak about anything concerning him to anyone.
One morning when my son was about five he woke up and said to me "Daddy I saw your dad last night."
I thought it was cute and replied " Oh really?"
He said "Yeah, he bought me ice cream and then we watched the killer whales."
Ice cream was my dads treat of choice that he would grab us boys and head to Friendly's.

I personally have had only one experience that I have since chalked up to night terrors, though my mom says there was "something" in the house. My husband had some sort-of friends who tried to conjure a demon or something, and he says he remembers something showing up, but he now ascribes that to an overactive imagination. My mom claims to have seen a ghost and that he stopped coming around when they dug his body out of the chimney. I have friends who claim to have personal relationships with angels. But me, personally, I don't know.

When they DUG HIS BODY OUT OF THE CHIMNEY?!?!? HOLY CRAP!
Nah, I believe in Science and logic and supernatural is not either.

How can you say that so sure? How do you want to know that something we call 'supernatural' isn't science after all? Just look back in history. Do you think a few centuries back earthquakes and lightnings were science to people? I'm not saying you're wrong, just there's so much we don't know about the world yet that it might be too early to become judgemental.

Dlou444 agrees: When they DUG HIS BODY OUT OF THE CHIMNEY?!?!? HOLY CRAP!

Yeah. She says the guy used to appear in their bedroom near the fireplace and one day they were renovating or something and pulled down some bricks and a body. After it got pulled out and processed and buried, they never saw him again. And he never did anything to them or acted creepy; he just stood there. She thinks he just wanted to be found and put to a proper rest.

thats so creepy omg
Has anyone seen the latest research discussing Dark Matter? How scientists believe that 99% of the Universe is made of it and it is not only invisible, we can't even begin to try and explain it.

If we can't explain 99% of the universe how can anyone have the audacity to proclaim what is or isn't? To be intellectually honest the best we can say is we don't know, but this is what we believe, as many have done in this thread, to their credit.

I definately believe in ghosts. Have a couple stories. Pretty much my entire family knows that my grandmother's old house was haunted. There was a lady who lived upstairs, and we believe my grandfather also came to the house (he died in it back in 1977 I think).

My little cousin was about 3 or so when this happened. She was staying the night over at my grandmother's and they were laying down upstairs. My grandmother said they were almost asleep when Hailey sat straight up and said "who is that?" my grandmother asked her what she meant, and she replied that there was a man standing at the end of the bed, and he looked just like her dad but with different hair (my uncle has really long hair...). So my grandmother told her that it was just her grandfather, and to go back to sleep and she did.

There was one occasion where I was upstairs in the spare bedroom/playroom. There was a dresser with a big mirror behind it, and I remember one time when I was about 12 or so I was messing with something on the dresser, looked into the mirror, and saw a young woman with long black hair standing behind me. When I turned around she was gone, and there was no one else upstairs at the time.

Several times my (other) uncle would come up to visit and would stay in that same spare bedroom. On more than one occasion, he has said that while he was sleeping, a woman would come and kiss him on the cheek. When my parents split up, my dad went to live with my grandmother for awhile. There was one morning when he was there that a lady who he thought was my mom had come over and kissed him while he was sleeping, only she was never over there

There were several other little incidences like these, nothing ever evil or bad. Lots of times you would be downstairs and hear someone walking around upstairs, or stuff like that. It's kinda creepy if you are alone and it happens, but for the most part we were never afraid of them.

"There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy" I live by that quote. Like some of you have mentioned we can't possibly know EVERYTHING in existence or every possibility and it's impossible to prove something such as ghosts, an afterlife, demons or whatever doesn't exist, so while people argue it can't say it DOES exist we can't say it doesn't either because there is proof for neither argument.
I'm a strong believer that this mundane world before us isn't all there is. I've had to many freaky happenings to not believe in something else. And I definitely believe in an afterlife and the supernatural. Though what I define in that supernatural category has yet to be fully decided on my part. Haha.
I mean the dollar bill has 'In God we trust' stated on it. A government can put it's entire trust supposedly into a being that has been proven no more than anything else from a belief system, and we accept this on notes everyday never thinking to question the presence religious writing on a note of money. So perhaps one could always open their mind in general to the world of supernatural and belief, even if we don't realize it.
I would have to say I'm a skeptical believer if that makes sense. I believe in the supernatural and am more of a Mulder than a Scully, but when someone says 'I've seen a ghost' or 'I've seen a faery' I will be very skeptical about believing them even if I do believe in ghosts and faeries. I want them to PROVE their CLAIMS, though I don't need to have the existence of ghosts proven for me. Ya get me?

My Mother has always believed in demons though. Strongly. She just can't believe there isn't something inherently evil out there, trying to push us and do a Faustus number. She hates the number grouping '666' and even had her phone number changed when it had those three digits clumped together within it. One of her many reasonings behind this strong belief is that 'If there are so many good things supposedly existent like angels, or sprites etc then there has to be an opposite. There can't be one without the other' and that there has to be something that pushes people over, that drives them to commit evil acts.
Funnily enough, though she never told me this when I was little because obviously she didn't want to scare me, I was terrified of demons when I was a child. I wasn't afraid of the bogeyman or any other childhood ooglie booglies. I was afraid of demons. I thought that not all shadows were shadows, but were actual demons pretending to be shadows until I let my guard down and they were try and take me/kill me/eat me/whatever. And I've never quite gotten over that. I'm still a little suspcious in that sense(not of shadows though, haha). I mean children are never told these things about monsters but somehow they always come up with them. Where do they get these notions? Unless children know things that adults don't- that we forget with time. My Mom always says 'When a child says they see someone or something. BELIEVE THEM. They're seeing something we, for some reason, can't'.
