I don't know to much about the details of this bill but what I have read so far has been fairly interesting. I can see why they are proposing the bill and many of the goals make sense; but I don't see how it would be possible to enforce/regulate it. If this bill were to pass there would be so many different people and companies that would need to be closely watched and regulated for it to work properly - it's hard to imagine that the government would be able to do so. Seems like a poorly thought out bill, that would cause more harm than good.

"Poorly Thought out bills" seem to be what Congress is best at.
I'm worried about the potential implications on the UK and European Union, from what I've read there's already been rumblings of a similar idea in the past. I don't like the idea of the internet being overly censored but I can see where they're coming from. There will always be ways around the system though so even if it does go through I don't think that will be the end of it.
 
I don't fully understand the bill, but when I logged onto Tumblr yesterday and everthing was "censored" until I signed a petition to stop this bill, I was really pissed off that I had to give my personal information to be able to see my Tumblr feed. :\
There are some reasons I do see the reasons behind the government wanting control over the internet, such as cracking down on child pornography and pedophiles being able to have access to sites where children are the target audience/users. However, I think this law violates a lot of basic rights.

when I signed in, it asked me if I wanted to turn the censors on or off...it didn't force me to sign the petition

No you didn't. At the bottom, there was a "back to tumblr" button that took you back and fixed everything. My brother used it.

I get what they're doing, I don't like how they're doing it. I know quite a few people were speaking of moving to Canada. MASS EXODUS!

Well I didn't see the option to do that. Anytime I tried to click on anything, it took me to the page to sign the damn petition. :\

Yeah, that happened to me too (it annoyed me until I read what I was supposed to be doing), so I get it. Sorry you didn't see it!
 
I get how piracy is a big problem for the entertainment industry. I'm so not the most knowledgeable on this subject, but while I'm not necessarily for this bill, I'm definitely not surprised it's being put forward. This is another step being taken by the entertainment industry to fight the change in how media is shared around the world. For example, there are a ton of musicians who, while not rolling in the dough, have opted for label-free albums because signing under a record company often means they give up the right to do what they want with their music. If an artist just wrote up a little song that they want to share with their fans on YouTube or whatever, which they don't plan on putting on their album, they often can't as a part of the contract they signed. I know musicians like Amanda Palmer refused to write a single new song until Roadrunner Records decided to drop her.

Sorry for the tangent, but anyway, the Entertainment business sees that there is a change in the way people want to obtain/view/share content, and they're fighting against it. This bill seems to be just another way for them to do that. It's understandable, but I don't think this is the way to go about doing that.

I think it's outrageous. 1. I use the internet primarily for the entertainment stuff. My whole life is kind of built around having the internet for entertainment stuff. With these restrictions, well... I can't even think of my life then. I have said several time... I'd hitchhike to Canada if I had to, but I'd be getting myself the hell outta here! I get the reasons behind it (people like making lots and lots of money), but all this would realistically do is hinder and effectively squash all of the creative freedom, expression, and experimentation that the internet allows.

In general though, I'm against censorship. I'm the most anti-censorship person I know.

So am I, but thankfully, the Irish government have shot down pretty much every effort that has been made to allow the state to control the net.

I can understand why there would be a movement to police the internet but I really believe that we loose much more than could ever be gained from it.
 
That video was very bias. And since I like to see both points of view, I'm not sure I can really make an opinion aside from NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! I'm scared. I don't want it to take down my sites. 🙁 It's going to make the internet a LOT less fun and I know it will anger a lot of people. My Psychology teacher was talking about it today (I brought it up though, of course) and he said it won't happen because of how much today's society uses the internet...I sure hope he is right. Thinking about that stresses me out. Mostly because I'm afraid it will take Skype down or something... plus, I quite like facebook! (Some say I'm obessed!! lol) And what would happen to BB???

I sure hope your Psychology teacher is right too!
I don't see how the government can justify the cost of the manpower and hardware that would be required to initiate and enforce something like this, especially with our economy being in the condition that it now is, but if there is the slightest chance that Washington can try to fix something that never was broken in the first place, I have faith that they will try, with no regard whatsoever to the poor taxpayers who are footing the bill.

I don't really like the thought of having the internet censorship bill. Because of what it'll mean. This is last thing I want, is for there to be a internet censorship.
 
Protect IP Act (SOPA)

Everyone must have heard about the Protect IP Act that's going through Government this month. The U.S Government is trying to 'crack down' on piracy by carpet bombing the internet. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and even BB could be potentially close down if this bill is passed. This bill affects the world, not just the U.S.

So, What's your opinion on the bills to regulate the Internet?

I agree. Some good points were made. I definitely posted this on my livejournal to help get the word out and do something about it. Because I do think if we don't stand up and do anything then this bill may have a BIGGER chance of passing. I know we don't want that.
 
I'm against all censorship. If you don't like it, turn it off. If you don't like your kids listening to/watching it, use parental controls or supervise them. Your kids need to learn about these things sooner or later, I don't understand the point of keeping it from them anyway. Unless it's something that will mentally scar them, let them explore.
