What do you think of the smoking ban in pubs and clubs?

Well the government have decided to ban smoking and soon smokers will not be able to smoke in pubs and clubs.

Now I know that this has happened already in Ireland, but what are your views on it.

I personally am against it as I like to have the occasional cigarette when I'm out drinking with my friends. I just find it annoying, I don't want to go out with friends and have to smoke outside the pub or club. I know that I wouldn't be alone as majority of my friends smoke, but it is annoying. I can see why non-smokers are supporting the ban, as the smell etc is annoying, but I always hoped there could be a way around a total ban.

So what are your views?
 
i definitly love this. i dont smoke and the last thing i want to do is go out with my friends and end up choking on someone else's cancer stick all night.
 
I'm gonna have to agree with akasha on this. We have a similar ban going right now, and as long as there is some sort of covered area that smokers can go to it doesn't seem to be a problem. That said it can really suck for smokers if they are being forced into the rain. Not a smoker here, but still hate to see someone stuck in a cold rain.
 
i used to smoke .... when drinkin its ...... like im missing part of my arm..... pint on hand tab in other... ( smelling everyone elses smoke...) so maybe a good thing?

I think a total ban is pretty damn pathetic. Next they'll be banning cars on roads.

Smoking and drinking go hand in hand. You can't do one without the other, its inhumane!

well with this new law i wont be able too ...... crap.......lol 😀

Lol! I know how you feel I love smoking, the only time I do it now is if I'm in the pub with my mates and a cider in one hand. I just have to have a cig in the other hand!
Well, there had been a ban like this one in Sweden since June. We all thought it would be so annoying having to go outside to get a cigarette etc. (I personally don't smoke but many of my friends do, so yeah..) But it's not that big of a deal honestly. I mean that's what you do when you're at home anyways.. I like it when people smoke inside (at these places), cause I'm weird like that, but yeah, turned out to be way less of a problem than it seemed..
 
indeed, coz i wouldnt like anyone smokin in my house, just polite to ask if you can smoke in house if not then go outside.... not goin to start again...not worth it lol 😀
 
Gotta say I'm all for the ban...i think cigarettes are disgusting but thats just my opinion...i could see why this could be a real annoyance to even the occasional smoker...they are trying to pass it in pretty must every public place here...restaurants, clubs, even bars...i would love to be able to go out without inhaling other people's almost inevitable cancer...especially after seeing more than one person i was really close to die because of it, one of them because of second hand smoke...but yea, im sure its annoying for smokers...
 
I agree with banning smoking in public. I smoked for 17 years but got a non-related lung disease and I quit. It was then that I realized the smell of nicotine and my wife laughed at me saying smokers think they do not smell like nicotine.
Besides my opinion on this topic what I find hypocritical is governments who ban smoking in public but they will not make it illegal to smoke. If you ban smoking everywhere then why not make it illegal? Oh yea the hypocritical part...they would'nt get their tax money would they?
 
I just don't like the fact that the Government is telling me that I can't do something. Where I live at the moment the pubs are going to be badly hit as it used to be a mining community so a lot of people smoke and have said that they simply won't come out.

When I was in New York on vacation it was annoying that I had to go out and smoke, because well it meant leaving my drink and also leaving the company that I was with.

I agree with not smoking where food is served and I can see why non smokers are happy as now they won't have to put up with the smoke. Although I make it a habit that if i'm out with non smokers and want to smoke I will always ask them if they mind I smoke.

I don't see why you can't have some places that you can smoke and others where you can't, as long as you have the proper ventilation systems. Then at least you would have a choice, instead of having that choice taken away from you.
 
Well, a total ban on smoking in pubs and clubs is a bit stupid really. You could at least have a designated area for people to smoke. Also, if the ban spreads to all public places (which I think it will do) that means that they can only smoke indoors, and if they have kids well....you see my point?
 
Yeah you see my problem is that they are taking our right away from us too. I agree Faith that they shouldn't have people smoking in restaurants where there is food been served but I think that they do need to have some areas for smokers to go. I think that the government think if they stop smoking in public places then they will stop people smoking, but I think it'll just cause more problems.

Plus as you said, teentitan, they will be losing money on the tax's if the number of smokers drops. It seems they haven't really thought about this very well.

I live in a village but most of us smoke and I know that the people who use the pubs etc are mostly smokers. Either it will mean that most of the pub stand outside to smoke, or it will mean that very few people will go out on a night as there freedom to smoke will have been taken away.
 
I think it's lame.

I smoke, and I don't trip about it. And when I drink I smoke a lot more. The bottom line is if people don't like cigarettes, they don't need to be around them. You wanna drink? Go to a damn liqour store and buy your stuff and drink in your smoke-free house. When you go to a bar, expect to be overcome with cigarettes. It's what people do. This whole thing goes against my live-and-let-live policy I have strictly enforced. I don't bug you about your crappy wardrobe [for instance], and you don't bug me about smoking. That's the end of that.
 
I think it is a great idea, If people want to kill themselves they should not be allowed to effect others!! 🙂
 
I think it's a great idea. I very much against smoking and I'm in favour of banning it all together, so of course I endorse the ban in public places, amongst which bars and clubs.

PJ said that smoking and drinking go hand-in-hand; that may be so for some people, but that doesn't mean they're the same. While drinking has no negative effects on others but the drinking (binge-drinking excepted), smoking bothers other people and is hazardous to other people's health.

Yeah I agree with that Ally... but in the same time I find it quite upsetting for smokers too.
Since I work in a club.. I find the ban a blessing.. well it's not been applied yet but if it is enforced before June gosh I'll be so happy cause the smoke + tiredness make my eyes so damn irritated.. like itchy and stuff... I guess I'm not meant to work in clubs but yeah... lol... plus it's now a well-known fact than passive smoking is as dangerous as smoking... and when I work there I must be passively smoking about 20 cig per night I'm guessing :sneeze:
But definitely understand that ppl would get really annoyed by it though... think positive... they're trying to save ya 😉 hehehe
 
I don't smoke, never have, never will(i know this), but i find the idea of a full ban to be a tad silly.
Food serving premises then fine, i can see the benefit BUT the regular pub/club should not have this imposed on them.

The clubs should be forced to equip better air circulation, allowing fresh clean air to move through the pubs pushing this smoke out. Make teh bar a no smoking zone and possibly have more fixed ashtrays in certain areas of the place encouraging smokers to go near them(i know most people would smoke everywhere but some people would aim for the ashtrayed areas.
The Clubs then can decide to get a smoking license allowing smoking on the premises IF THEY WISH, i mean lets face it, tons of people smoke. This also adds an extra burden to pubs and clubs with an entry fee. When people leave to have a quick ciggie, they'll leave in packs, so waiting outside they'd need to be stamped or something to get back in, adding extra vilgilance duties to the door staff.

This £50 fine smells too much like the Speed Cam Scam the Police have going on.......bah
 
Without even considering the fact that this is in regards to smoking i'm againt simply because i think its one more dint in our right to freedom of choice, even moreso for the people who own pubs and clubs, its them who own the pubs not the government they should have autonomy and be able to choose whether to have smokers or not, i cant believe pubs etc don't even have the option to create a smoking room or that they are getting fined 2.000 pound if someone smokes in there pub.

Also i think this law is silly from a practical point of view as how are the police going to enforce such a law especially in big night clubs where they can't even stop people taking drugs and country or out of town pubs where the nearest police presence is miles away, again it will be making criminals of a lot more people.

Now personally i'm a smoker and hate the fact i cant smoke in a pub from june, to me and everyone i know smoking and drinking go hand in hand, people who dont smoke normally smoke when drinking. Also i dont think it'll work, it'll just lead to pubs and clubs with beer gardens increasing profits while others fall desperately behind
