Yeah I always wondered about that! I know that the vision that they showed Buffy sort of helped her defeat the first in the end, but I've always thought that she may have found it easier if she had recieved the gift they were going to give her, so I guess that would have been a missed opportunity.
the reason Buffy didn't take what the shadow men offered her was because it was going to make her less human, more demonic...that wasn't a price she was willing to pay.
the biggest 'missed opportunity' in my eyes is Joyce. Buffy's mom appeared a few times in S7, most notably in 'Conversations with Dead People', when she told Dawn that 'Buffy wouldn't choose her.' it was never really confirmed if this was actually Joyce, or if it was The First (i believe it was The First) i would have liked to have had this confirmed before those credits rolled for the final time.
when The First appeared to Buffy in the basement, it would have been awesome if it took Joyce's form, instead of Buffy's, then all my questions would have been answered!

First off all, take out the Wood Storyline......I liked the possibility but it just felt wrong here, secondly, the Spike/trigger thing......That was built and built then when the Sccobs cottoned on, it was like ohh, ok, and the first never used it after, spouting, its not time.
Take out Willow/Kennedy's relationship too, not because i hate Kennedy(i do) but because there were other things to focus on.
The constant bitching of the Potentials too, take that right away.
Keep them in, i did like some and te idea was sound, but just stop all the whining.
OK, with all that gone.....Focus on the core 4, you want back to basics, Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles. examine their relationship of how it was to how its become. What they have been through and seen......
Sub Plots.
Dawn progression too, i liked her being treated as more adult by this season.
Anya, just felt like she was there. I LOVE Anya, but after Selfless, i was not impressed. I think she could have had a heroic death earlier in the season.
Andrew(Anya comedy replacement), i thought his story was cool....
Spike dealing with his soul, but not in the 'i need to brood and find redemption'...but more like...Vampire Spike did evil shit.....so what, i'm a bad rude man(i liked when he wore his duster again...finally)......
The First evil....make it scary, more tangible.
The Bringers.....Blind Monks....i know i shit MYself.....they could have been so mush more threatening....
Uber Vamps....Great Idea....but WTF.....Bring on the Night(was a great set up....Buffy barely winning with ALL her training then in the cave the Slayer Brats seemed to have no problem with them without the Scythe)

Caleb......I liked Caleb, but i got a bit bored with him to be honest.
The Council, i do believe they should have had a greater part.......Give Quentin at least some more screen time to prove why he is the head of the Council, that he isn't a bad man, just he has a job to do.
Like Lyri said, Joyce. We have some mild conclusion to the story, but i wanted it to be fully appreciated, fully understandable.
After all that, i do want to say i love season 7.

I think Buffy taking the 'gift' from the shadow men, was a missed opportunity. That could've been cool! think...uber buffy! that would've been amazing. In the end I thought it was a bit strange and selfish. She was willing to give her life in season 5 to save the world, but not willing to become more powerful to save the world!? Wierd...
I agree that the council shouldve played a bigger part in this, and another thing! The guardians shouldve been explained more. If they were watching the watchers, where the hell were they when the council exploded.
I think bringing back all the previous big bads in corporeal form would've been nice. For the final battle in the hellmouth.
Also I would've liked the hellmouth creatures seen in the early seasons to be in the end.

- As I have stated many times, a battle between Faith and Spike! They built it up perfectly with their two small confrontations and yet did not continue it.
- The potential slayers. With the exception of Kennedy, the girls seemed to have little personality. I think Joss could have expanded on many of them with maybe small scenes from their past. Kind of like 'Lost' if anyone watches that show, where each episode we see a character's past.

I thought "Conversations with Dead People" was a great episode, but also that the strongest story would have resulted if the First had taken Tara's form to try and deceive Willow.

Actually, i totally believe if Tara had been in Conversations with Dead People, that would have created less impact then the one seen.

I don't know. I have thought in the past that having Tara herself instead of a Tara surrogate would have made the scenes with Willow stronger. Regardless of whether that would have been the case, I do see the point of fans who wouldn't have wanted to see Tara for the last time on the show as something evil, something that wanted to hurt Willow.
It might have been interesting to have had Drusilla come back for more than the few seconds that she appeared in "Lessons". To have seen her deal with Spike having regained his soul, and his relationship with Buffy. The latter was a story left largely unfinished after S5 "Crush". But I suppose that Spike had quite enough story in Season 7 as it was.

There were a lot of little "missed opportunity's" in season 7, but for me the biggest has to be The First.
Amends:
This Big bads introduction was set-up all the way back in season 3.
Bring on the Night:
The first isnt some random monster, its not a lowly demon. IT IS EVIL. The First Evil is the reason evil exists. You don't/can't/shouldn't even try defeat something as powerful as evil itself. This thing is set-up really, to be the greatest season ever. Buffy takes on Evil itself.... and finds out Evil is hopeless... and possibly retarded. I mean honestly, with the dross we were served I don't think Joss should even have attempted to deal with something so large, because he did fail. He didn't capture the essence of evil at all. The First evil was a tiny little thing, where was its ambition? Where was the fear it should have caused? Evil manipulates, Joss' version just talked your ear off (even Andrew saw through the First). The only tension they could create was by bringing ooglyboogly monsters into the fold. Conflict is important to any story, physical conflict is secondary to that of an emotional nature. Where was the Firsts mind-f**ks?
I remember when I watched season 7, I always had a feeling I was waiting for something to happen. A part of me assumed I was waiting for Buffy to tell Spike she loved him, but when that happened I didn't feel gratified or satisfied at all. Now I realise, I was waiting for the real First Evil to show itself... Still waiting!
(Seriously, it really bugs me when Evil is misrepresented, don't worry though, someone gave me the phone number for good lawyers..)

My theory is Cordy accepted the power while Buffy said no. Cordy died while Buffy lived. I think not becoming demonic was a great choice. Maybe Buffy was able to overcome it all through a light inside of her. Plus, who knows what Buffy gained while living in heaven for an eternity.

Gotta agree with Psychotic Jackass. We were supposed to be watching the actions and plans of an entity that has existed since the dawn of time and is the sum total of all evil throughout the dimensions and yet it's plan had less chance of success as did that of the Mayor!
It ponced around making sweeping gestures and claims of supreme brilliance whilst doing nothing of any great import for almost the entire season, then when it's final push came it was totally unprepared to deal with the one girl that it had actually supposedly been keeping it's eye on.
Not that i actually wanted to see them all die but if i had been the First i would have had Buffy captured and restrained in lots of heavy chains way before she was even aware that i was making a move. I would have killed off the Scoobies one by one along with the potentials then, once i was almost ready to have my army make it's move i'd have had Caleb bomb the hell out of Sunnydale High and the surrounding areas to clear out as many people as possible before the Turok Han took to the streets.
Oh yeah, and just how dumb would the ultimate evil have to be to not at least wait until nighttime to send it's uber-vamp army out into the world?
Don't get me wrong, i enjoyed season seven and i get that Joss had to do things the way he did to make the story possible but the First did need to seem to be a little more in control because to me it always seemed that he was making it up as he went along and putting all his eggs in one big, evil basket.
Oh, and Psycho, 16 times, including quotes. I want a victory cookie!

Yeah, I think that The First was all talk and no back-up. I was expecting to see this huge evil demonic thing for the whole season but all The First did was pretend to be Buffy and make witty comments. They should have showed The First as more intimidating or something. They were right to nickname it "The Taunter."

I think the biggest missed opportunity was on the writer's part- they didn't bring back the cheese man! I mean jeez, they could have had an awesome ending episode, Buffy kills Caleb, goes in to fight the first and BOOM! There's the cheese man waiting (backed by the first) with his deadly plate of smelly cheese!

*Moments pass, more potentials fall under the cheesyness surrounding them. Buffy looks around, before quickly spotting two giant pieces of bread in the corner. Looking up, she speaks*
BUFFY: I want... to.... have a toasty cheesy taste.
*Dramatic music kicks in, Buffy slowly rises and kicks the cheese man back against the bread, sandwitching him between the two slices*
THE FIRST: NOOOO!!!!
*Buffy throws Cheese Man-Sandwitch into hell flames, the first and ubervamps sizzle into dust with an agonizing cry as he turns crispy golden brown and the hellmouth begins to close*
Scene ends with the scoobies gathering around the pit with a solemn look. After a few moments of silence, Giles shrugs and promptly digs into the large grilled cheese. The others quickly follow suit.
