What ethnicity are you?

I saw the age and sex thread and it made me curious as to what ethnicity everyone is.

What ethnicity are you or what ethnicity do you identify as? For a few people they are two different answers.

My mother's side is Swedish, though they've become Americanized (more specifically, Texanized) that they would not be able to get along in Swedish society today (though like with many other ethnicities, they tend to hold onto the old ways a lot harder than the actual nation of origin, even when they don't intend to, which can make immigrants proud of their heritage seem oddly old fashioned and even backward to those in the "old country" who tend to be more cosmopolitan and modern). There's a small library in the county that most of my family lives which has a book with an extensive history of the town and my family's past is quite colorful (and the library book missed how my family once hid Bonnie & Clyde which helped save the family farm, at least according to my grandmother, this happening before her own time). I strongly suspect they didn't so much immigrate to Texas as they fled justice.

My father's side (which does not claim me) is Scotch-Irish, and my grandmother on that side of the family (I normally refer to her as "Mamaw" rather than "Granny") claims to be descended from the Butlers of Kilkenny (Ireland), though my father is a Cochran (Scottish in origin rather than Irish, though I've been teased before of being related to the Cochran warlock in Halloween III). They're very different from my mother's side of the family, and Dad marrying my mother was quite a scandal to them, and I was tolerated by them only up to the divorce. Now they pretend I don't exist and I've given serious thought to having my surname changed to my mother's maiden name.

White, with Irish being the most prevalent nationality in my family tree. Quite a bit of French and Scottish in there too.

I don't know, what does ethnicity mean exactly? The colour of skin? Where you were born? Where you're family is from?

@Mr. Pole : Your heritage.

So how do you describe that?

Your heritage.
If anyone is curious, I am a white Scandinavian. If my dad registered as Sami, I could be an aboriginal, because of a great, great grandmother.

Norway has one of the most homogeneous populations in the world, so unless you're an immigrant, you won't be reflecting upon your ethnicity a lot.

@thrasherpix , interesting. I am Canadian. Jamaican on my mothers side, my brother did 23andme which said 49% Nigerian, 1% Chinese and 50%Dutch but who knows ours might be different. I am a fan of "Finding Your Roots" and "Who Do you Think You Are" because it demonstrates the value of lineage is in the fascinating world history.
