Trap - 3/10

The movie started kinda okay I guess but it got so ridiculously stupid by the end that I was non stop rolling my eyes. What on Earth happened to M Night between Sixth Sense and this nonsense.

Wild Things (1998) - 7.5/10

This is always a fun watch. Love the twists and turns and how toque on cheek it is. Kevin Bacon over acting is great. Might be my second fave Neve Campbell performance after Scream.
 
Immaculate - 7.5/10

Sufficiently eerie and ominous, with some insane moments of violence, I quite enjoyed this little religious horror. Sydney Sweeney was very impressive in the lead role and I liked the swerve that the film took in the third act. Solid movie.

Practical Magic (Re-watch) - 7/10

I love this film, despite how chaotically written and edited it is (and despite the slut-shaming that surrounds Nicole Kidman's character). All the actresses elevate the material and the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman is particularly good. Also the film is gorgeous and very witchy-looking, it has a magical and fun score and the underlying message about sisterhood comes through nicely. A Halloween fave.
 
Quite a few to add to the list today.

Scanners - 7/10.

A very neat effects film that has kind of an eerie vibe to it, but the plot isn’t super engaging. Definitely not Cronenberg’s best, but still a good movie in its own right.


Tourist Trap - 5/10.

This went on for way too long. A bunch of….kids? get trapped out at some Old West Museum run by a seemingly benevolent man. But wouldn’t you know it, there’s a masked killer on the loose! This one is definitely creepy/eerie in parts because of the bizarre mannequins and psychic powers, but the overall plot is bleh and the movie kills off or takes care of too many characters within the first 10-20 minutes. A good portion of the movie is characters running away, just to get caught, just to run away again, but it does have its moments.

Also since it’s a Full Moon Video title, you get a fun ad reel beforehand of all their “hit” films like Evil Bong.

Fright Night (the original) - 10/10

Excellent movie. I had a great time watching it, the pacing was fantastic, the characters were all great, I cared about who lived and died, and the creature effects are wonderful. It’s just a fantastic and fun movie that makes me miss the golden age of horror films, where social messages and critiques were abandoned in favor of just making something really enjoyable.

Hereditary - 9/10.

First time actually sitting down and watching this and yeah, it’s an eerie eerie film. It’s also just really sad and tragic. Mental health, death in the family, creepy demon worshipping cults, possession, you name it. The movie also just has really creepy imagery all over the place. The earliest I can remember is the deceased mother/grandmother’s picture at the funeral, who seems to stare emotionless into your soul. Creepy stuff.

The Fog - 9/10.

One of my favorites. Does its plot make the most sense? No. Are some characters totally superfluous? Yes. Is it still just a great and fun ghost story? Absolutely. I know Carpenter and co. think it’s trash, but it’s arguably one of his best. Just a great atmospheric tale of the ghost crew of the Elizabeth Dane and their last voyage for revenge.

@Mr Trick John Carpenter in general deserves more love. His 70s & 80s output was fantastic and critically lambasted.

Now Ghosts of Mars and Escape from LA? Yeah we can forget those

Doesn’t Lynch himself kind of hate it, though.

I think it’s fine for what it is, but the industry was nowhere near where it needed to be in order to actually accomplish the narrative. Lynch’s version stumbled so that Villeneuve’s could sprint

I think its more he hated the experience of making it because the author was a pain and he didn't have full creative control. If your a fan of the novels your probably going to hate the Lynch film. If like me your in-different to the novel and just treat it as a fun, weird David Lynch film there's plenty to enjoy. I think the story is really silly, so at least this film leans into that 😀

The Substance - 9/10

Can totally understand the hype surrounding this film. Both leads are great, the commentary is A++ and it's actually quite a sad and disturbing story underneath all the body horror (which in itself is truly horrific at times). I also love that, despite the nudity and constant body close-ups, the film doesn't feel exploitative at all and actually manages to both employ and subvert the male gaze to terrific effect.
