Personally, I loved both the character and the actor. She was so broken that, even though we saw her kill and eat people just like any other vamp, I still felt genuinely sorry for her. I find it difficult to hold her responsible for her actions because her mental state is so clearly impaired. The new vamp Holden tells Buffy that he likes being evil. He feels like he's a part of something. He relishes the fight and what he thinks will be the upcoming kill. He is, like most vamps, actively and intentionally evil. Vamps morph from victim to villain during the transformation. They know it and they like it. Dru, however, is so very broken that she never quite stops being the victim. Her Angelus-inflicted insanity remains with her as a vampire, a state that was imposed on her by her tormentor for the express purpose of continuing her torment. She's not clear on the fact that she's evil. She doesn't have the mental capacity to relish the kill. In fact, she sometimes has to be cajoled into eating. Even though I know she's a soulless demon, I still feel sorry for Drusilla. I think the fact that she walks the line straddling evil and simply sick makes her a very interesting character.
That said, I think she'll be back. I was disappointed with the fact that we never saw Dru again after Crush. I think she probably has an axe to grind against Buffy for stealing her boys and against Angel for a whole lot of things, not the least of which was setting her on fire during their last family reunion. I'd like to see her come back as a big bad. One of the things I'd like to see her do in that capacity is to try to rebuild her lost family from people who are important to Buffy and/or Angel, like Connor and Dawn. I'd also like to see either Angel or Spike kill her in the end. Maybe they could do it together. Angel made her, so it seems right that he unmake her; however, Spike loved her, so the emotional impact there would be neat. Either way, I definitely want Dru to come back.
