What Happened on Charmed?

I'm not a HUGE Charmed fan, but I missed a lot of episodes and I have no idea what happened. I stopped watching Charmed after "The Importance of Being Phoebe" and started watching it again at "Dreamspell". Somewhere along the way, Cole disappeared. Now I'm just curious about what happened during that time. Will someone please explain what happened?
