what happened to Angel in Season 5 people!

i think season 5 was not really about angel all about spike. also david boreanaz went badly ugly and all the sex appeal went. if spike was not in season 5 it would have been so bad. Hello who would have thought angel becoming ugly!!! i think once season 4 started thats when it went all down hill for mr Boreanaz!! what do you think????
 
nah, DB will ALWAYS be sexy to me...not as sexy as VK or JM, but still.
i don't feel that S5 was all about Spike, but he was a great addition to the cast. S5 was more about, to me, the fact that the team was really getting lost, being driven away from their mission. which was exactly what the Senior Partners wanted. the main point of the season i feel was whether or not Angel was going to get back on his path, or follow that shiny road that leads to Hell.

Season five was not all about Spike. He was just an addition to the show. I think that the fifth season really showed how power corrupts people and it can usually change your priorities and determination. We saw it with ALL of the characters in season five.
 
Hmm funny that, allot of people think season 5 was all about spike and that was the same year the show was canceled...
 
I never thought David was sexy so I never really cared about that. However, season 5 is in my opinion without a doubt the best season. Might even be the best whole season of television ever, imo..

Yeah, but you don't find any men sexy, or do you?!

People only think season 5 was about Spike because he has such an overpowering character. He wasn't in it that much. Most of the time he was just loitering in the background, being Spike. Nobody does Spike as good as Spike.

how can the season be all about Spike? it is called Angel....S5 was as Lyri and others pionted out,about power and how you can get changed by it etc.
Spike was bought in, i reckon to challange Angel not only on where his priorities where going, but on his future path, ie the shanshu, how easily it can be taken from him, maybe Spike was there to test him, to show him that the way of W&H means no shanshu, etc.He strays he isn't going to get rewarded.
BtW DB was very sexy in s5, ok he filled out abit but that means more flesh to hold!
 
OMFG David Boreanaz was, is and ALWAYS will be sexy 🙂 and i dont think season 5 was all about Spike i agree with Lyri's statement it was about the team kinda going there own way.... kinda like with Buffy in season 4 the scoobies kinda went a lil there own way... Character Growth

Very true. Both BtVS and Angel were secretly created as a vehicle to spotlight Spike. As they should have been, given that he was far more interesting to watch then either of the two supposed leads. 😉

You may already know this but the show only got a season five thanks to JM signing up and in fact ratings were never a true cancellation issue anyway. The show was axed due to financial concerns. Angel fans should thank Spike for giving them an extra twenty two episodes that they would never have seen otherwise. 😛
 
Even if "Angel" was a somewhat expensive show, it was one of The WB's highest rated shows, wasn't it? Why would they want to cancel it with the fourth season? You'd think they'd want a fifth no matter what for syndication purposes.

Anyway, for me, "Angel" was never just about Angel nor his journey and quest to become human, for me it was an ensemble show (despite the name) and I considered the series to be about Angel and his group of friends/allies. Especially in season five...so I don't think Spike took the spotlight away from anyone. And watching him and Angel work together was fun.

Actually, not so much. Angel's ratings were not great in the fourth season and Joss had to make several compromises to get season five approved, including Spike and making the episodes more standalone than the very arc intensive season four.

The WB had absolutely no interest in whether Angel went into syndication or not. They wouldn't benefit either way.
 
Well then I do know that The WB said Angel was the only drama that improved in the ratings during that broadcast season. Of course, I don't know what the actual ratings were since I didn't follow the show when it was still on TV. But I thought I read in some Angel-related article that when The WB cancelled the show it was one of their highest rated shows.

And if the ratings for season four went down, I can only imagine it was simply because of the such serialized nature of it and that it would be hard to follow if one episode was missed. (Season four is my favorite season in all of Jossdom.)

The WB was also developing "Dark Shadows" and they were really high on that project...haven't there been people that said The WB cancelled "Angel" because they didn't want two vampire shows? Supposedly the reason DS was not picked up was because of the cast choices and the director didn't do his job, because he figured The WB would reshoot anyway.

Yep, season five actually was doing very well for the WB, ratings wise. Certainly better than season four, at least in terms of consistency and comparison to other series then on the air. That was kinda my point when I said that the show being cancelled was down to finances rather than ratings. 😉

Then you would imagine correctly, or at least that is the popular theory and one shared by the WB at the time, which is why they demanded that Joss make the episodes of season five a little less arcy. Of course they ignored the other issue of how they scheduled the show and therefore made it very easy for the fans to be missing episodes, as they never knew when a new one would be on, but then the WB were good at failing to take any blame.

Ah. the old WB Dark Shadows excuse (or scapegoat, take your pick). Even today I still laugh at how ridiculous it is for them to ever expect the fans to accept that they couldn't have two vampire themed shows on the air. Why the hell not? And if not then why cancel a popular one for one that you clearly couldn't depend on even as far as the pilot episode was concerned.

They must have thought that we were idiots! 😀

If that was really their reasoning, I do think they were morons. They could have paired them up together, even though they're quite different...Dark Shadows is a horror soap while Angel...is not. But anyway, I do think fans of "Angel" would have liked "Dark Shadows" and it could have greatly benefited The WB rather than hurt them.

But when they cancelled "Angel" I don't think they had seen an actual pilot yet. There's an interview on www.collinwood.net somewhere where one of the crew members of the 2004 DS pilot was talking about the experiences on set. The director had no intention of doing a good job, the cast was wrong, but no one cared. They thought a pickup was definite and that they'd get to reshoot the entire pilot.

That really pisses me off though. Because now there's no sixth season of "Angel" or any season at all of "Dark Shadows". Grr.
