What happened to the people of Sunnydale?

It's been some time since I watched the last episode but it had crossed my mind a few times - What happened to the citizens of Sunnydale? The town is totalled after the big battle and obviously there would have been no evacuation noce/warning.

So did they all die, knew by instinct or what?
 
well we saw in the last few episodes that the townfolks were evacuating Sunnydale quite quickly. I guess pretty much any sane person living there would have left before the big battle.
 
Yeah, people were evacuating. Realistically there might have been a few people left, but based on how people were acting by the end I think we're supposed to believe that everyone was driven to leave.
 
I think most people left.

Since it was a small enough town, you'd think most people would have their insurance with the same company, that must have been some payout.

I agree... We saw in "End of Days" (I think??) where people were leaving town on their own, without having to be told. I think as deeply stupid (as Snyder put it) as the people of Sunnydale were, they knew enough to know that things were getting bad and something big was about to go down. And if they didn't, and chose to stay? Well, R.I.P. residents of Sunnydale.
