At the end of the season, there was a huge battle and many casualties. I have to say that the battle was cinematically amazing and watching all the characters we've come to love fight so hard for this just cause made me feel so sad that the show was ending. I could relate to every character and over the 7 year run, I've grown to love them all... even the villains.

The First was an interesting villain and seemed to be the type that cannot be defeated. As far as I'm concerned, The First is the baddest of the bad since its the first evil and all. With that said, what happened to it? At the end Caleb (I think that's his name) died but we don't know much about what happens with The First. Is it dead? Somehow I doubt that? If its now, I wonder when will it be when the First shows its ugly head again. What do you guys think happened to the First? Was it explained and I just missed it?

I dont think he was defeated...I dont think he can be...
But being all...ghost-y, he cant exactly win the war without his army...so I think, he's secretly re-assembling his army, to wreak havoc upon the world, once again!
Mwhahaahah!

As a non-corporeal entity, the First Evil cannot be defeated in the traditional sense of the world. All Buffy and Company's victory at the Hellmouth did was destroy the army it/he/she had assembled; it/he/she is still out there and is still a threat, should it/he/she be able to assemble another army.

I always thought that the First was in fact part of everyone, as it is the stem of evil and everyone has a bit of evil in them (side note, is there a first good?). Therefore it can't be destroyed, because it would destroy evil and everyone would be happy and smiley.

As far as I know the First just slipped away.

Alsoon the note The First was scary at first, I mean in Conversations With Dead People he seemed like a real terror (maybe that was because he hurt our poor Willow) but towards the end he just became a scary teasing voice, like a bad bully.

"You don't know hurt. This last year's gonna seem like cake after what I put you and your friends through, and I am not a fan of easy death. Fact is, the whole good-versus-evil, balancing the scales thing?I'm over it. I'm done with the mortal coil. But believe me, I'm going for a big finish."

Wow, I'm amazed. You remembered the quote! LOL Anyway, I figure the First is probably still around and is just waiting to strike again. I don't know if the writers would want to revisit the story with the First. They've already expended the story so I don't think there's much for them to build upon.

By the way, I don't know if this is kinda off topic or not but I'll post it here anyhow. Why is it that the First choose to strike at this point in time? I wasn't too clear on that. The First could've attacked at just about anytime it wanted but what was it important to do it at this time?

The impression I got was that the Slayer line was endanger somehow so getting rid of them would allow the First to go all out with the evil. Did you guys feel the same way?

yeah i don't know if the first can really be defeated...I think it's still around..getting reorganized ect. , it'll strike again..lol

We learned the basics about the first in AMENDS. It is the evil that is in everybody and if there is no evil there can be no good.
We also learned about the necessity of evil in the episode in ANGEL, when Angel tries to get to the Homeoffice. They end up back on earth and Mr Manners explains how it works to Angel.
There is no grey without black and white and there would be no definition for good without evil. We all have a bit of evil in us.
So, no, the first evil cannot be destroyed, only put into its place and kept at bay. And that is exactly what Buffy and her crew did in the show finale.

There's a theory that floats around these boards from time to time, that the first is a member of Wolfram & Hart.

I don't buy it myself.

The First can't be destroyed because it needs to balance good. They left it rather open at the end of Season 7 because if The First is balanced with some form of good, what is that form of good? Is it the Slayer? And if it is, then the scale between good and evil has tilted dramatically to the side of good because of all the new slayers. That would suggest that the First has to increase in evil to carry on with its purpose.

I'm going to back Jules up here and say that I always believed that it was a balance thing. With all the potential Slayers in the world becoming Slayers it tipped the scale in favour of the good side.

Yup, Like everyone here has said the First will NEVER be destroyed. It lives inside every living being, In my opinion after the Army of the First was destroyed it was in some sense 'defeated' not physicall but mentally. Knowing it lost the war, also I think not only did Willow cast the spell to activate ALL slayers just to help kill the Uber-Vamps (Ok main reason but I believe there was another). Like in the quote mentioned above

"...Fact is, the whole good-versus-evil, balancing the scales thing?I'm over it. I'm done with the mortal coil. But believe me, I'm going for a big finish."

It seemed in my point of veiw the First wasn't the only one over the balancing the scales of good and evil. Like Jules said, with Willow making all the potentials Slayers it DRAMATICALLY tipped the scales of good and evil, to keep the First at bay...knowing if it coulden't beat acouple Slayers. It surely can't beat an ARMY of Slayers. Also, I think someone asked why the First chose to strike then and now, I believe it was because something was 'wrong' with the Slayer (Buffy). Meaning she had died TWICE and brought back TWICE, so the First seemed the Slayer was weaker at some point. I think that was mentioned in the show, was it not? 😕

There must be someway The First can be destroyed. And he is The First Evil and The First Good was the First Slayer so it is her, lol, that just came out of no where.

Joss was going to kill Xander off and have him appear as The First regulary.

The idea about balancing the scales is a good one. I don't know if that's what really happened but it's a theory I can buy into. It makes since since the First made it clear that it doesn't give a damn about balancing the scales any longer.

This might be a little off topic but the thing about the First being a part of Wolfman & Hart really made me think. It could be one of the Senior partners! We've never seen the Senior partners so the First could very well be one of them.

My theory on what happened to The First Evil...

Having his army vanquished and his plans dashed yet again by some insignificant little blonde, The First fell into a deep state of depression. Eventually he decided that destroying the world just wasn't for him, so he went off in pursuit of other opportunities.

Eventually, he found himself working at the WB and cancelled Angel to get back at Buffy for destroying all his hard work.

I didn't remember it, got it from a site.

I think it was exlpained that Buffy dying (again) had an effect on something and thats why, maybe he liked Buffy's sexploits in S6 so he didn't strike then.

I remember that the First mentioned Buffy's second ressurection gave it an opening to strike. I can kinda see how that works since Buffy was revived mystically the 2nd time around. One thing we've all learned from the Buffyverse is that whenever magic is involved, there's a consequence. For Buffy's ressurection, we didn't really see what the consequence was. Some might argue that the consequence is Willow going bad but that was kinda something that she did to herself. The First going after the slayers though, that's something that derived from mystic forces. :: tu ::

I was discussing this with my partnet the other day. No i don't think it was destroyed, I think that it can not be destroyed because there can be no good without evil. With the triggering of all slayers we know that there is definatly good still existing in the world (Not to mention the ongoing of Angel) So evil must still exist. I think the first is out there but its tail is between its legs for now and it must regain strength and power before it ever attempts another corporate take over.
