What happens after we die?

We're buried or incinerated. 😛

On a more serious note, I have no idea. Don't really believe in Heaven or Hell, but, I like the idea of reincarnation. I do believe that souls exist, but, don't really know what happens to them when we die. Guess it's one of the things we can't know for sure, until we get there. I'd find it a bit sad, though, to just stop existing. The idea scares me a bit.

When you die you go to the gates. But the thing is you don't go there to be judged. Those gates are where your judgement begins.
All christians and those of other religions come back as atheists and all atheists come back as christians etc:
Those he likes come back as ghosts.
And believe me, I know, as last time I was there I was told to come back as a ghost.
 
I'm an agnostic, so I don't believe in heaven or anything like that, but I sort of liked the idea proposed in the movie Waking Life. You know how you sometimes have dreams feel like they last for hours and then you wake up and realize you've only been asleep for a minute or two? The idea is basically an extension of that - the last few minutes of your life where your body is dead but your brain is still functioning feel like an eternity and the "afterlife" is a seemingly endless lucid dream. It's not the most pleasant idea, but it could certainly be worse and it seems plausible.

Aside from that, if there IS an afterlife, I can only think that it's something no one has conceived of.

Actually at the moment I don't really care. If there's some kind of reward or punishment after we die I guess I get what I deserve what ever that mean. I couldn't live my life aiming at a special prize after I die. What ever you believe will happen is just guesses anyway.

I believe heaven/hell/religion are all more or less obviously man-made concepts so I'd have to say that I think there's nothing. But on a more agnostic point of view I'll quote an essay I recently read and say "I don't know, but you don't either..."

...and I'm not sure it matters. I guess we'll all know in due time, eh? If there's something then there is and if not then little will you suffer from it. 🙂
 
I can still remember the night when I first started to think about my own mortality and realised I was going to die- I think I was about eight and we were coming back from a trip to the seaside.

As to what happens afterwards, I think it's unknowable and possibly unimaginable. Everything we perceive in life is filtered through the brain, which decays, but enough people have had enough experiences throughout history which suggests that something happens to the immaterial part of our personality. But the thought of non-existence terrifies me, so it's probably not surprising that people are drawn to religions which offer the prospect of some kind of afterlife.

and this is why forums don't bring up religion, cause peeps cant handle that peoples views can be different from each other. I don't like to say I don't believe in God, cause to say I don't believe can imply that there IS a God to believe in (and I chose not to) and I don't think that's true.


I was discussing the after-life sorta hoo har with my mother, and she don't believe in any of it either except she (and I) have experienced other-wordly .... stuff. So ya never know 😉

anywhos I'm tired and rambling... and more interested in what goes on when I'm alive.

Seriously though, I'm not sure exactly what I believe in, but I know I believe in more. This just can't be it. What would be the point? At least that's how I feel.

I don't think this needed to turn into a negative discussion towards other peoples religious beliefs. Can we all just share our thoughts and accept that other people have different beliefs than us?

Can't we all just get along 🙂

Now IMO when we die, we die. I'm not sure if I believe in heaven because I'm a person who usually needs proof in order to believe things like that. So I'm undecided but interested in hearing others ideas.

That's Russell's theory of DD. I think you can get around the contradiction by using a quantifier instead, i.e. 'There is less than one thing in existence known as God.' That's if I've got it right, my philosophical logic is still a bit scratchy.

Oh, and I didn't see a problem. If you do believe in God then somebody saying it's made up shouldn't really bother you. Belief is a personal thing so I don't see the problem, it doesn't diminish your own belief in God and surely that's what matters. Plus one of the main messages in the Bible was to be tolerant of others. More tact could have been used though I'm sure.

Anywho sorry this is a bit OT. That's what you get for studying philosophy until 2 in the morning. 😛
