What happen's to the Angel side of Angelus?

Hey guys,

This may be a confusing thread but its been nagging at me for a while and I'm interested to hear what you guys have to say on the subject.

So when Angel loses his soul ( yep soul talk again, sorry guys!) and is turned back into Angelus, what happens to the Angel side? We know Angel goes to hell after Buffy kills him In season 2 but when he is actually Angelus where does the Angel side go?
To hell? Or is Angel literally the soul? And Angelus the vampire and Liam the man?

It's something I've always wondered.

So what do you think happens?

It's kind of confusing, now that I think of it.

I mean, they make it very clear that Angel remembers and feels everything that Angelus did or does, but at the same time we see very plainly that his soul is removed from his body. Willow conjures it from the ether at the end of S2 and Angel Investigations literally stores it in a mystical jar or something in AtS S4. Both times Willow states that she's restoring his soul and pretty much putting it back in Angel's body.

So I think that the soul is Angel/Liam. The demon doesn't go away when Angel's soul is restored, Angelus makes it very clear that he knows everything Angel has done, and that Angel can actually feel him at times. I think that the notion of a soul in the Buffyverse is an almost tangible thing that acts as one's tether to humanity, their conscious. I mean, vampires without souls can clearly still experience emotions, and the rare or exceptional vamps can even have complex emotions, but I think a soul in the context of Buffy and Angel is the literal definition of humanity.

So I think that when Angelus takes over when Angel loses his soul, Angel is gone. He can remember and recall everything Angelus has done when it's restored because it was done in his body, and Angelus is still in there. Angelus never truly leaves, but when the soul is gone, Angel does.

I view Angel/Angelus as a single being, so there isn't really an 'Angel' side, so to speak. The soul is basically a conscience and a moral compass. When it is taken from him, it goes into the ether (or they could put it in a jar, I guess). When the soul is returned, Angel/Angelus is assailed by guilt and is a good guy again.
